How did you find music before /mu/?

Friends, radio, parents' collection

Ultimately /mu/ helped me get started but since a lot of the same stuff is parroted here it's hard to branch out. Discog/genre charts are cool though

90% of what I listen to is still from my dad's record collection. rest is picked up via friends and occasionally recs on /mu/

1. Think of music you already like
2. Look up the label that made it
3. Listen to other music from that label
4. Look at other labels which those artists have released on
5. Check out those labels

Actually paying attention to labels is my almost sole source of music, I barely ever find anything off /mu/. Obviously doesn't work for Bandcamp/Soundcloudcore but there is enough good professionally produced music out there for that not to matter. Unless you're a wannabe hipster who only wants to listen to obscure music.

if i stumble upon a song i like, then ill listen to the album which contains the song. then explore the artist if i enjoyed the album.

Radio, YouTube, word of mouth, parents, wikipedia, googling "best of" lists. Same way you learn about anything really. I hope you get most of your information outside this website desu.

Pandora, Pitchfork, Spotify recommended, the occasional Youtube suggested video. I had listened to most /mu/core prior to posting here. Visiting here has made me listen to new music on a much more daily basis though.

Those "100 best [X] songs of all time" shows turned me on to a lot of music when I was around 13/14ish. The 90's one in particular was great.

I check the dates of new releases on music blogs such as Pitchfork and Albumoftheyear. Teaser songs are important but it also depends on the artist, because I may have listened to them in the past.
For oldies I just listen to recommendations in Spotify, and I read their bios.
Pre-internet was somewhat awkward, I often went to the record store and I picked the ones I liked based on a machine that used to scan the CD barcode and let you listen to 30 seconds of each song. I also relied on music videos that appealed to me. I was in my pre-teens so I guess I didn't really need any better.
My parents have terrible taste in music so I never really discovered music that way.
