What do we think of The Downward Spiral?
>>
A masterpiece.

People like it here. I think it's written by a guy with the mental capacity of an edgy 13 year old. To me it get unbearable around the 5th somg.

It's my favorite NIN album. With Teeth has a special place too because it was the one that got me into them when it came out.

Listened to and enjoyed With Teeth.

Will I like this? And is it similar to With Teeth
>>
>>70902883
The great thing about NIN is that every album has a very distinct feel and sound, while still being recognizable as a NIN album.

So to answer your question, it both does and doesn't sound like TDS. Just listen to it, it's great.
>>
>>70901636
You're only showing how you are the 13 year old edgelord here.
Trent is new eno
>>
"Edgy lyricism" isn't really a valid critique of NIN
>>
>>70902883
TDS is waaaaay more aggressive and moody than With Teeth but it is a masterpiece.

Start with Closer and March of the Pigs, if you like them, then listen to the full album start to finish
>>
The millennial backslash against an album like this because of it's "lol so edgy lyrics xD" is pretty lame.

Millennials need everything to be made with a thin veil of irony, anything that's even slightly sincere and emotionally candid is considered "cringy."

I will admit there are a few lines on the album that are kinda dumb but for the most part it's a truly epic, in every sense of the word experience. One for the ages.
>>
>>70903230
I am a millennial and I agree with you

Thank you for being the one who wrote that, I am getting tired of saying this again and again, it's easy to call The Downward Spiral edgy, it's the cheapest way to attack it, all ideas it presents perfectly justify its dark blunt and not so subtle lyrics.

Even with lyrics being like that, they still offer a lot of substance and each of them perfectly tells the story that unfolds.

>>70903122
I'd say that the better way to ready for yourself is listening to the entirety of Broken EP (it's short) and jump into The Downward Spiral then, right at the beginning to the end, no skipping of any sort. The entire album's a journey.

The Downward Spiral > The Fragile > Not The Actual Events > Hesitation Marks > Year Zero > With_Teeth > Still > The Slip > Broken > Pretty Hate Machine > Ghosts

This is my personal rating of NIN albums, this order changes every single time I post it. Let it be known I love all albums even Pretty Hate Machine and Ghosts.

This album could have been so much edgier if Reznor had his way. He wrote a song which would have been featured just prior to the song The Downward Spiral, "Just Do it" where the only lyrics were "Just do it, no body cares."

Just remember that Reznor was still basically a kid, fucked out of his mind on booze. Unlike Manson, he would eventually grow up.
>>
>>70903660
I don't understand the hate of the lyrics, they fit perfectly with everything that's going on with the album and I would had loved it even more if it had been even edgier

Actually, we don't know much about the song

>He wrote a song which would have been featured just prior to the song The Downward Spiral, "Just Do it"

We don't know where it would take place on the album.

>where the only lyrics were "Just do it, no body cares."

We don't know if there weren't supposed to be more lyrics.

Also, how come Andrew WK can get away with a suicide song but Trent can't?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GQ_8hbk4PS8
>>
>>70903660
I think that "Just Do It" wasn't included due to its edginess but due to its lack of subtlety.

Besides, you alreadly have Eraser and The Downward Spiral tracks, how can you top those songs in terms of "KILL MYSELF" meter?

Because Andrew likes to PARTY

Also, Dylan Kleboid hijacked the The Downward Spiral song and now Trent has reduced it to an instrumental when played live.

Not saying there is anything wrong with the lyrics. Some people are just skin deep about it. They don't seem to recognize TDS is a concept album about a man killing God and the horrifying ramifications that come from it.
>>
>>70903753
>Dylan Kleboid
Nawh, I think it is Trent's decision not to include lyrics of "The Downward Spiral" for his own reasons, or maybe the lyrics didn't work out live.

"I Do Not Want This"'s whispery part is sometimes completelly forgotten about when played live, this could be the same case.

Or is there a source that Trent doesn't play lyrics of it for that reasons? Didn't Dylan's journal referenced several songs from TDS?

>>
Genuinely the greatest album of the 90's

>but muh loveless
>>
>>70903814
I listen to all of the NIN records as concept album even when Trent doesn't call them that, they still all of them have a strong theme going on, to the point they might as well be concept albums since all of them have some sort of an ending.

>>70903844
Memes are powerful tools (and I mean that unronically now), it is the only reason why normies are laughing at Linkin Park now, they wouldn't call it edgy or bad otherwise.
>>
>>70903833
Can't really compare PHM(which is an edgy synth-pop album) to TDS (which is Industrial alt-rock with some ambient segments on it)
>>
>>70903833
They're different animals all together. It's like comparing Broken to Hesitation Marks, they've got almost nothing in common.

I can see where you're coming from. TDS can get a little gratuitous. PHM lyrics are far more earnest. Like Fragile, the album is more personal.

Have you listened to Purest Feeling?

I think The Downward Spiral is the exact opposite for me, I can't call it boring, if something it is emotionally exhausting and intense.

I personally found PHM pretty boring in some spots. But I guess that's the magic with NIN, every one will have their favorites of some sort.

>It's what Skinny Puppy's 1989 album should have been instead of the Ministry cosplay that was Rabies.

This is true. Skinny Puppy fans, and especially the die hard ones who insult Reznor as a rip off, fail to understand that they seemed almost afraid to try new things and instead played follow the leader to Al. They did not strike out on their own and that is why Reznor casts a shadow over the scene and has elevated himself beyond one genre.

That said, I love Skinny Puppy with a burning passion, and Nivek is a neat and charming guy to this day.

With an exception to Year Zero, which is not am indictment on left or right, but on the course we as a species are traveling, Reznor's work has largely been apolitical with people infusing their own politics into songs lie Head Like a Hole or Hand That Feeds.

Young Trent stated on the Reznor that politics were boring to him

Old Reznor said he was embarrassed by Bush, but Year Zero has happened under Obama and Trump was going to be a disaster ( But I imagine he said that more to keep the peace with his Millennial waifu)

On the road, Trent Reznor tells me, he goes through phases: "Self-destruct mode, repair mode, and then enjoy life mode. Followed by self-destruct mode." Just before Christmas he felt himself nudging toward self-destruct mode, then something pulled him headlong into it. He and his golden retriever Maise had been together for three years. She was visiting him on tour. When he came offstage in Columbus, something was wrong. "Come right now," they said. "It's Maise."

Maise had been playing. She had jumped over a railing, expecting there to be the same ground on the landing side as the leaping side. It was fifty feet down. Trent hurried to the vet's. Maise was struggling to get up, but she couldn't. Her back was broken. There was nothing anybody could do, except the only thing we know how to do when we can't mend something.

That was a bad day. Mr.Self-Destruct came to stay for a while after that. Over the last few years, Trent has stripped his life down. Everything that might have mattered apart from Nine Inch Nails he has either rejected or made it reject him. When he went on tour he didn't even have a home to go back to. Maise was his last link with a life you might call normal. And now she was gone.

This afternoon, when all the questions had been asked, he had fetched some photos. He handed me a few snapshots of his new house. It has lovely Southern balconies. He said it will be nice to do things he has never had the chance to, like "picking out kitchen sink units." He sifted through his other snapshots, fanning them closely in front of his face like a careful card player. He showed me maybe one in ten, mostly of Maise and him, lying together on beds. One is just Maise alone, staring into the camera. "Her last photo," he said. He told me he'd maybe like to act, and when I asked what he'd think about if he needed to cry on cue, he said: "Whatever's on top of the sad pile. Probably Maise dying."

Me too, I actually replaced The Fragile's album cover with those flowers.

It describes the album much more, it isn't about a man against God and to let go of any control, it isn't about gaining control over anyone, well, it kinda is.

It's a man who has been rotten away of any hope of a normal life who is putting all of his strenghts and heart into just finding his way out of his depression, trying to find love and protect her only for her to fall apart.

The Fragile feels much more innocent, it isn't really all that dirty, there is a lot of beauty in The Fragile. It has humanity, something protagonist in The Downward Spiral got rid of, here he reclaims his humanity, he is in pain and he fails his fight with depression but he proves to be human.

Fuck, this album is so fucking good.
