Not really, because the punk aesthetic does not cater to the least common denominator, which would be the more commercial move.
I don't know what Smash Mouth has anything to do with this
Pop Punk is about the sound more than the commerciality. Obviously, just by being a pop genre it makes itself suitable for the mainstream, but there have always been intensely anti-commercial DIY pop punk bands like Screeching Weasel, The Ergs, and The Thermals.
