How much music theory is too much music theory?
When you become more concerned with bragging about how much music theory you know instead of actually using it to make music.
How can you have too much music theory? Like what does that even mean?
When you rely on theory instead or own imagination and taste to write music.

>Music is from the soul, not the textbook
>Music theory is limiting
>>70888771
When you constantly try to experiment with bizarre composition as opposed to embracing certain techniques that have been time tested and proven to sound good, and instead giving your own spin on them
An analogy: A great chef can make delicious foods with simple ingredients. Salt & pepper, bread & butter, garlic and pesto, etc, can be combined in infinite ways to make tasty foods.
Sometimes people learn music theory and basically go "fuck using salt, that's been done before!" and their food ends up tasting like shit

Fuck you. Make music that is evocative and important to you. Listeners come naturally.

>>Music theory is limiting
There are 12 tones in western theory. Some world music use different tones in different intervals.
Violins and the like are microtonal, including the human voice.
Theory is great, but one must know its limitations.

This is fucking dumb. People like to cite guys like Jimmy Page or Jimi Hendrix, but most of their tracks, surprise surprise, use the same old progressions that have been done 1000000x before, thus by that level not that imaginative. What makes artists like those legendary is certainly not anything one can gander at from theory, but their arrangement of sounds and expression through technique.
When it ruins your taste in music and makes you listen to shitty /mu/core all day long

musical theory stopped being necessary when tape recorders were invented, the only thing you'll struggle to develop without it is your own elitist diction.
Struggling to develop = the development process
