Not really forgotten since they released a new album recently which was pretty good, but they are not as big as they used to be in 2008 when they won Mercury prize and Grounds for Divorce was a huge hit.

They were often lumped with other post britpop bands like Coldplay, Snow Patrol, James, I Am Kloot, Keane, Starsailor, Doves or Travis, but their sound was more unique and instad of copying Radiohead they were mainly inspired by Genesis.

This always fucks me up to think about. One of my favorite albums of all time and probably one of the most perfect debut albums ever. Can you imagine trying to put together something that looked like that? i think they really made the wrong move in the way they tried to make the second album so different, it wasnt even necessarily bad but it was so run of the mill compared to silent alarm. After that pretty much nothing they could do could bring them back to that level again, and as much as i liked the 4th album they'll probably fade completely into obscurity by 2020. Sad shit man

i'd say most bands of that style that stick it out through the early years probably find themselves in sketchy situations like that. Brent Hinds from Mastodon lived in shacks and a touring van for ages according to Troy Sanders. Black Metal isn't exactly comparable but mayhem were living together in a house at a time when they were all nuts, especially Dead. Plus the fact that Euronymous wanted to kill Varg and i think it's fair to say Varg probably wanted to kill him to some degree too. I don't buy the stuff he says about it being purely self defense based on shit he's said about him recently and some of the details just don't add up

Jonas Akerlund is making a movie out of Lords of Chaos now but Mayhem, Varg, Darkthrone and pretty much every one else are barring him from using any of the actual material from the time. It's a damn shame because he did an amazing job making a band look like dead era Mayhem in one of the videos for the new metallica album. Pretty much everyone from the scene just seems to hate the book and the idea of it becoming a holywood production. I'm kind of worried that if it does well black metal and the style and imagery will go super mainstream and be watered down to nothing

legitimate criticism, bm sound and aesthetic relies on being a very niche genre. are you against the production of the movie?
>>
>>70873291
I'm not against the movie it'self being made, just concerned about the impact it will have. I think visually they'll get everything to a T, but without any of the music they'll have to pull a rabbit out of a hat in a big way to make it all come together. Another concern i have is if in today's political climate everyone will come off so badly that the actual musicians will be exposed to a lot of hate from the mainstream media and the like.
>>

>I'm not against the movie it'self being made, just concerned about the impact it will have.

i don't believe the musicians would care that much tho

>>70871231
This album is positively wonderful!
>>70872671
This album used to be one of my favorites but as the integrity and cohesion of the band dissolved completely, leaving no room for good new material, and some lacklustre releases came out from them, it fell out of favor with me. Can't sit through the whole thing. Has a few decent tracks, but feels like a kitchsy chiptune/indie electro fusion album from some throwaway artist that got real lucky to be so famous now.
>>
>>70873395
Fenriz hates the fuck out of the whole idea to be fair, and there's been no kind words from Varg either. I agree with your first point tho, when you look at it that way i wish it wasn't being made the way it is and was more of a low budget thing not being trotted out to so many cinemas
>>
>>70867369

I have no idea why i listened to them in high school, but i gotta admit my friends and I enjoyed the shit out of the millionaires got us into our house party days.
>>
>>70873459
how big of a budget are we talking about?

they might be bothered by its existence but varg already said he's not going to put out any more bm music anymore so the effect on the scene doesn't matter that much, at least to him. maybe he'd care because of it shitting on something he spent most of his live building but i belive he's also pretty busy with his beautiful, crazy aryan rural family
>>
>>70873581
I'd say enough to get all the costumes accurate and get some decent music. A more gritty documentary style would benefit it greatly given the subject matter. As far as the scene goes it's basically done for good, the music and merch still exists but outside that brief window of time there will probably never be anything like it. And i think the issue with Varg will be that he doesn't want any attention outside of what he's getting right now with his youtube channel. I think if anyone learns about him through the movie and goes poking around he'll end up back in jail faster than you can say "huh, wow"
>>
>>70873674
why would he be back in jail? do you think he still does shit that'd put him back behind bars besides what he and his wife write on their blogs?

i agree that a documentary would be a better depiction of the scene and doesn't have nearly the same harmful potential. that being said, is there really a necessity for anything else to be said about early norwegian bm? i'd be more interested in a music history/sociopolitical analysis of it than to once more hear the same stories being told
>>
>>70873788
I would absolutely love an analysis of why all these young guys in the scene were rejecting christianity and social norms to the degree they were , and how some of the more extreme views like the guys that were nazi sympathizers or arguably neo nazis developed into that. As for Varg i think he is wound up so tight with current events that he is just waiting for an excuse to fight back in a very physical way. He admitted in a recent video that the reason he had all those guns a few years back illegaly that he was caught with was that he watched the movie Red Dawn from the 80's and got freaked out. That doesn't speak of a very healthy mind to me, and even ignoring all that i think the french government would love to make one out of line statement so they could throw him in jail or send him to norway.

It's always weird to look back and recognize the unique characteristics of an era that you'd never noticed when living through it.

Nothing seems like it'll ever be worth getting nostalgic about at the time, yet here I am actually missing the late 00's, shit
>>
>>70873927
it's a pretty interesting topic but a music journalist would never be up to the task and academia never seemed to interested in it. it reminds me of varg wanting to be thrown in a dungeon when he was arrested and asking police officers to be physically violent with him. the scene wouldn't have lasted 5 minutes in a third world country tbqh. south american punks put up with shit norwegians could never imagine

why does he live in france though? i thought it would go against the whole blood and soil thing he's got going on with his family. he should quit while he's ahead, profit off of his popularity without selling out and enjoying a good life with his family. he's absolutely crazy, as you put it, and probably won't do this. i wonder what will put him in prison next

>>70874199
Yeah they were in the right place at the right time to get away with how they were acting for sure. I honestly don't know why he chooses to stay in France other than the fact that his wife is there. Maybe he thinks france is the safest part of europe for him to be in for whatever reason. As for what he will arrested for i'm kind of hoping it'll be something anticlimactic like putting out a video considered hate speech, other wise he'll put an even worse spin on black metal in a lot of peoples eyes than there already is.

the funny part is that while everyone _still_ sorta gushes over this they all forget that A Weekend In the City is by far their best album to date.

Intimacy came close, then kele went solo for a while and when they came back gordon left which hurt them pretty bad, then Matt ditched ship and no one could ever live up to the insane drumming he laid out for them.

honestly it should have been Russel to go. he's still just nothing more than a cheap Jonny Greenwood knockoff.

I saw them just after Kezia came out in a little fire hall. Arif did a stage dive in to 3 people and landed on his head. Moe wore the protest the hero short shorts. Still one of the best shows I've ever seen even though the sound was crap.

All folk punk really
