Music theory is not necessary for creativity it just compliments it. You don't need to learn how to write to learn how to express yourself orally but it helps you develop your vocabulary.

This. If you make music theory prescriptive then songwriting and composing isn't fun. I hardly think of it when composing to be honest. I just know about it and think back about how my progressions make sense, or use it as a means to complete an idea.
