Can I get some feedback on this short clip I've been working on today. Not sure if it is worth continuing. This is the first thing I have worked on where I am singing, so, sorry that I and the mixing sound like shit.
>>
>>70808083
Guitar sounds perfectly clean, maybe a bit too thin but that's a really small detail desu.
Voice needs some correction, needs to be brought a tiny bit back and it's way too dry, need some reverb and delay, also EQing to cut the unwanted sub frequencies and some slight compression (your voice is pretty much controlled throughout so you'd be throwing "just cuz" mostly)
Overall a pretty good song, I enjoyed it, finish it and add a couple more instruments and some drums lateron.
>>
>>70807163

I was gifted the arcade one for Christmas. It's a sound synth and sequencer and arguably the most versatile one out the whole line. You can chain up to 128 patterns and chords apparently. It surprisingly even has its own speaker.
>>
>>70808130
Thanks. I probably could have added a little more character to the guitar by mixing in the built in mic with the pickup, but I forgot to put it off just pickup.

>>70808083
>>70808360
Seconding arcade. It is definitely the strongest of the bunch. If you can afford another, I would recommend Robot, you can do some rhythm/sequenced stuff with the Arcade and lead on Robot.

Honestly, not bad. A common mistake when ripping freely like this is going into complex rhythm too soon. Focus more attention on breaking into familiar riffs and melodies before you hit those triplets. I think the tempo might be a little fast for both of you too. But yeh, a really nice memorable riff is more satisfying than finger magic tricks. All the best knew this.

whoops i'm tired

I'm still really fucking new to this whole thing, but I attempted some industrial electronic sort of thing today.

I'm trying to get more of a harder "crunch" on the kick and don't really know how to do that, and I'm also trying to add a more metallic ambience to the track aside from the existing reverb, but I can't seem to do that without muddying up the whole thing (which you can hear pretty badly)

Here's the draft as is, tips/feedback would be really appreciated.

I've been playing piano and other instruments for over 15 years and want to try my hand at producing some songs so I have couple questions.

How possible is it to make music without hardware (besides a pc)? I don't have any hardware for recording and I'm a bit strapped for cash atm, might be able to get some stuff in a couple months(not even sure what to get first) but for now I only have my laptop.

Is Linux good enough? I use Linux for everything and don't really want to go through installing Windows, I'm very happy with Linux and I'm really used to it. I found a couple DAWs for Linux, especially Non caught my eye, but I'm not sure which one is good. There's also the Hydrogen drum machine which I've already been using for a while, I set up a beat and practice to it.
>>
>>70822441

this is the best way to make music senpai, all in the box! get a MIDI keyboard tho just to play around with your ideas easier
there's a DAW for Linux but you should probably get one of the more mainstream ones on windows.

>>
If I'm interested in making ambient music like Selected Ambient Works II or Brian Eno's stuff what should I look into in terms of synth patches to learn how to do and compositional techniques
>>
>>70823493
its really easy to make lush ambient sounds with samplers. 30 seconds of fucking around with an acapella and you can get some cool textures.

i use harmor, which technically isn't a sampler, but i find it very easy and fun to use. it has built in fx such as distortion and chorus which help to bring out certain tones.

Sadly I agree. When I put the guitars in mono they sound so dull and not there but if I leave them stereo they take up so much space. I should prob add a bass synth but other than that I'm stuck and on trying to not make it sound empty.
>>

I have a rule that I got from orchestration and that can be applied to everything, when you hear a symphony it always sounds so thick and amazing yet you only hear one instrument playing the melody and a homogenous cluster playing in the background supporting that.

>tfw I stopped using FL Studio for anything else besides mixing tracks I make in Maschine
Is there a better way to integrate Maschine into FL, because I don't want to handicap myself. I like FL and I'm well versed in using it, but the workflow with Maschine is so much faster, and since I can't figure out how to send each track to the mixer as a vst, I've resorted to exporting the finished wav files into FL instead.
It's actually frustrating as fuck because it's way more time consuming, and if I want to change parts of a track, I have to redo the entire thing and render it again.

yea ive just been looking up how to do the things he's doing in fl, seems to be translating nicely. im learning!!!! thanks
>>
>>70829478
>sucks, but I'm gonna call you out because even tho 4-5 months is a long time without producing, I doubt you can't remember anything
Well I'm exaggerating a bit, but I had a really natural flow to how I produce and now I just feel lost.
>>
>>70829524
phasing is when two signals cancel each other when you convert them to mono, you don't want that happening in general but if it happens on your low end (which is more than possible compared to any of the other frequencies because there usually isn't a whole lot going on in that area besides kick/bass) then the result will be lack of kick/bass in a club that plays mono
for hip hop you can get that collection with all the analog drum machines and also some acoustic drum kits for kontakt for jazz

I can't really give advice on mixes because I'm fucking terrible at music, but could someone please help me? I got a free copy of ableton live lite with my midi controller, I usually use Reaper but don't use any of the stock VSTs and shit, is Live Lite compatible with plugins or what? Is it worth it to use it with the plugins I'm familiar with and discard Reaper, or should I just stick to what I know? I'm mainly asking because I cant get my Midi controller to work with reaper, but I could probably keep at trouble shooting. sorry for the poor english, I hope its clear enough though
>>
>>70832018
yes you can use plugins with live lite but youre limited to 8 audio and midi tracks and 2 sends

i would say to try and figure out how to use your midi controller in reaper because its less limited

>>70832271
Also the problem with the midi controller is that the "piano" keys don't register, but what I think are directory/navigation keys play an odd arrangement of notes. I haven't assigned anything, just plugged it in. Anyone familiar with this kind of issue?

I posted this a while back to someone with the same issue - searched the archive for it to save having to re-draw the image

>Original post date Jan 7th:

Before I begin I want to say that this isn't a ground loop (because they tend to pick up mains hum at either 50 or 60 Hz depending on your geographical location), but it tends to share the same solutions.

I get this a lot when connecting more than one computer's audio interface to a mixer (usually USB ones) and it's usually resolved by looking carefully at how each device is grounded, and perhaps by creating a single ground path that all devices share - sometimes this makes it worse and sometimes it removes it altogether but your solution has something to do with grounding so experiment with that.

Image related was my solution.

not bad but not good either, the idea and execution for the most part are very nice, however the mix is not good, the sine wave you have is playing way too high so it comes through as not having any bass, not a big fan of that kick and some of the synth sounds sound "cheap" like the moogy pluck.
it seems you have clear direction but the execution isn't great

Zero-G's Nostalgia library has a lot of synth effects from stuff that you don't hear much of elsewhere, might be worth a shot? Pro Audio Torrents has it so no doubt it'll be kicking around elsewhere too:

Not to be insulting or anything, but the first question I'd probably ask is what genre are you trying to go for, and how long have you been producing for.

Sounds like a bunch of acid sounds strung together without too much thought

Well music is technically a collection of frequencies and noises, and this is a collection of frequencies and noises......

But seriously it needs work as a song, not just production tips. Melody, harmony, rhythm are all missing. Too repetitive with no point or end destination.

enough room? good design?
>>
>>70853498
Dope. Great beat, but I do think it overstays its welcome a bit. Needs more variation.

That synth hit or w/e at 1:38 is a bit too wide in the stereo image I think, throws me off a bit unless that was intentional. And if so, I'd probably only keep it for the break in that case.
>>
>>70853994
I kind of understand wideness/stereo/mono stuff but I don't hear the wideness. I didn't really do it intentionally. Also yeah I will add a bit of variation should be easy

whatchu guys think

my plans are to rap/sing over it

but first i have to learn how to rap and sing

not completely finished

the melody with the bells sound like something I'd hear out of one of those old kid's book with a speaker built in.

AHAH

yea ill probably change it

i was just improvising and messing around

I'd like to improve to eventually make good soundtracks for other projects or anything.

I've been composing for nearly a year occasionally but this would be the first time I share my shit with strangers.
>>
>>70854674
dont stop, keep going
>>
>>70855588
Can't tell if it's vst or soundfont or recording, so that's good. The composition is nice, definitely sounds like a video game soundtrack. Sounds like a JRPG soundtrack. Keep it up

here's a trap song. not sure about the vocals they do need some EQing. anyway please give advice

are you talking about the first or second one. i thought the first one was good, far from vapid. actually pretty unique. also how the hell does it sound like bells from a kid's book? it's much darker and it has a bunch of different textures and tones. i think it's well made

this is prod, we don't do hooks. strictly 2 jazz chords and some water plopping foley. no exceptions!
>>
which are your favourite vst's?
>>
>>70857529
call me a basic bitch but sylenth and massive are good and easy to use. an hour on youtube and you can use both of them. and you can easily pirate both of them. i use this soundfont vst thing called sforzando which gives me the ability to compose with real recorded instruments although you cant choose where the sample starts or attack/release so you kind of just have to deal with it but you do have access to the samples so you can drop em into a midi track and manipulate them there. i also use dsk akoustik keyz for piano.
truth be told you will learn a lot by just using a C note of an instrument and pitch shifting it in a midi track. learn to do that and you will be able to easily make unique sounds that are very malleable. i think its important to use real instruments because they have certain unique qualities that arent achievable with synths. the challenge of it is that recordings can have mistakes in them and stuff like that but thats how you become a good producer. sterility sounds terrible anyway.

when i have alot of shit going on in the mix how do i make the snare pop out? ive tried eqing but it still gets lost when the mix gets heavy. any tips?
>>
>>70858939
There's nothing wrong with making everything else quieter
Dynamic range and appropriate mixing is more important than loudness
You can use a bit of compression too especially if you're making house/bass/trap music
>>
sorry to ask such a stupid question but do you guys have a preferred place to get your vsts?
I'm making the transition from bedroom recording/somewhat lofi production (aka lots of freeware and effects that come with the DAW) to something hopefully more polished and full

if it matters i'm looking specifically for soundtoys atm
>>
>>70859836
i got my soundtoys from kickass torrents. you couldgo on the pirate bay but be careful

Ignore what I say, I'm really wondering if anyone can see what settings I should change for my 286s to get a bit of a better sound.

these are the current settings I have on my 286s. I've tried messing with it and this is what I have right now.

>>70853493
keep at it man, it's a long journey but it will pay off

>>70853498
great arrangement and song, however the drums should be louder, they're not cutting enough through the mix, great stuff right there tho

>>70854593
>https://clyp.it/yj5nkzes

>>70854593
heyyy, this is pretty niceeee, it gets a bit repeitive and I'm not so sure about the drum samples but other than that cool stuff

>>70854674
pretty cool, needs more work in general and on the mix but not bad (bells sound a bit weird but if you 're going for a creepy feel then it's right on)

>>70855588
sounds pretty random and you didn't bother to play with the velocities so every note on the piano has the same one, also the quantization makes it sound very very robotic. you need to get some better libraries and work on your composition a bit, also learn how to make stuff sound natural. you might also be going for the soundfont sounding goal but honestly it doesn't sounds more like you're trying to emulate the real orchestra.

Does anybody else have a hard time with automation? It's the messiest and most tedious part of production for me. Especially when I need to automate mixing stuff gets out of control. And I hate opening up an old nearly finished track that has a bunch of automation because I have to go through and make sure that everything is where it needs to be. Does it get easier and are there ways to control it better? Workflow tips? I'm using Ableton Live.
>>
>>70860418
it's what it is desu, I just like to open all automation on new lanes but that's it
>>
>>70860418
There are lots of key shortcuts for automation you can learn. Using a utility on a track purely for volume (automation) can be useful so you don't have to adjust the main track volume.
>>
>>70860418
The simplest thing is don't automate so much. I use the clip fades for volume.
