I don't often agree with Robert Christgau but one thing he was definitely right about is that metal suffers from delusions of grandeur. Metal heads are always claiming that it's modern classical when it doesn't hold a candle to the classical tradition in any regard.

Metal is pretty normie.

Your average metalhead doesn't really care about the quality of the music they care about arbitrary things like the aesthetic of the band and how many blast beats and riffs they can fit in a song.
