>better lyrics and melodies (songwriting)
>better guitar work
>more variety (at least some Smiths songs are kind of uplifting or funny)
>better vocals
>more consistent
>better rhythm section

Take my opinion with a grain of salt though because I don't like the Cure much.

I've never been crazy about the smiths, largely because I can't stand Morrissey as a vocalist of person. I like Johnny Marr's chimney guitar playing, though

As for the smiths, really dig their early post-punk albums...kinda hit or miss with the later alternative stuff

Oh, better production too. Much of the Cure's work is heavily reverbed and I'm not a big fan even though I know that's kind of the idea or whatever. I think the Smiths have aged a lot better, particularly Marr's guitar tone.

Morrissey is a better singer and lyricist. Also he never wore faggy makeup and had ridiculous hair. Johnny Marr is a superior songwriter.
