Most important aspect is to make sure you have some of those grungy drum samples. Don't cut them too exactly - it can make a cool effect if the actual sound of the snare sample start's a couple of miliseconds in to the sound.
Other than that, don't quantize too much. Play them in if you can. Or draw them into your piano roll free hand. If you have it all quantized it will sound very stiff.

The way those guys probably did it was using a couple of sliced loops and not entirely singular drum samples. But that's just a guess ofc

samplomatic is basic but quite cheap (in terms of CPU).i tend to use it for drum hits as you can have a whole bunch of them without your PC complaining.

it is however missing nice features like built-in reverse, and automating stuff is a real pain.I use kontakt for anything like that

Kontakt has timestretching but I hate using its tiny ass GUI. The wave editor and mapping editor can't be popped out in the plugin so it makes everything cramped and not fun to work in.

Check out the vst Poise. It's an mpc style sampler that has a great workflow.

What's your opinion on using a drum machine or making beats inside your DAW? I've been making beats (kick, snare, hats, etc.) for many years but recently I bought a MS20 and I really like the control I have over my synths and recording this way.

I was thinking about getting a Roland drum machine because of this reason, but I will miss how fast and easy it is to make a pattern in my DAW.

You can go way hotter with the mix in terms of treble content especially.

You can use your stereo image a little better, you have some nice stereo effects on some of the bass lines but individual perc lines and such could all be panned a little just to produce a wider sound.

I think the bass is muddled on yours because you have many layers playing the same sequence, I would consider removing one and trying to make the remaining one sound as good and as large as you can, detuning and layering is overdone but often what actually sounds the fattest is a single oscillator.

I think you could fix most of that from the master just with some multiband comp and eq'ing the master (this is not haram no matter what articles online will tell you), it's dance music it's allowed to be loud.

The main issue you have is the kick, it has a very loud sub bass boom on it but it's very long and slow so it's taking up a lot of your volume when you do it, if you chose a kick with a shorter transient to it you could get the same sub bass boom effect but with a lower volume and taking up less space in the mix.

in terms of making a fatter bass around the kick, once you've selected a new kick (or even if you like this one and don't want to change) figure out the strongest basic frequency of the kick (usually around 60 hz or so) and cut that out of the bass noises in a just a little notch, you can then boost around that little notch on the sub end and such and get a super fat bass that doesn't affect the kick, you'll never notice the missing frequencies in the mix either.

I as well as Richard D. James have this condition.
Now Richard attempted this but to no avail, he failed to make it both look and sound good.

It sounds pretty dope at a few times but visually it fails, the only cool thing he achieved was converting images into sound, most notably his own face.
A few artists have attempted this as well but usually ended up resorting to subtly placing images behind a track made with synths. Which is kind of cheating...

Despite a few effects here and chopping/cutting for rhythm you can clearly see patterns/aesthetics in the pic related. This is probably a really noob question, but I can't find anything about it on Google so I may as well ask here.

I use FL studio 11, and any new VSTs I use that didn't come with the program don't produce any sound. Neither clicking on the keyboard on the UI of the VST, pressing keys on my MIDI controller or putting notes in the piano roll do anything. They seem to work on FL12 but last time I used that the Fruity Slicer distorted samples heaps whenever I would pitch shift them.

Any suggestions?

I'm learning harmony (triads, inversions, seventh chords and inversions, doublings, figured bass, soprano, modulation, non-harmonic tones etc.) from a couple of books. This is probably a question for /comp/, but honestly, I'm not sure how much this will be useful for my composition in the future. Have anyone here learned that and can give some advice? I'd get into more counterpoint later on, and into orchestration.

Typically music students will start with a basic understanding of 4 part harmony and gradually build on that knowledge by adding more complicated harmonic structures, essentially attempting to understand harmonic movement in western music up until the late 19th/early 20th century. Counterpoint generally comes pretty early on. I would suggest getting the basics down and then moving on to 20th century harmonic theory as that will probably be more helpful in writing your own music. Look at as many scores as you can - music literature books can be gotten for pretty cheap if a university is having a book sale or something.

the synth changes need to be more gradual to make it more hypnotic and "classic ambient", right now you're cutting the volume and changing the progression too quickly for my taste. Maybe put a high pass filter on the synth and play with the resonance.

I'm currently going through Laitz's complete musician, Piston's Harmony and one of my own harmony books which is used in high schools and university. Laitz has a wider spectrum of theory than just a harmony, so on what level will I be when i finish it and where should I go next?

Btw, Piston's Harmony is a pre-school level compared to a book from my country, Jesus... But it is nice and clear, even though I heard it's a bit outdated (don't know why).

it's an interesting chord because it can imply a couple of things
in your case it can either imply lydian, because the g# is what separates A major from D major making the D root a D lydian mode
but if you feel more like there's an (implied) E root it suddenly sounds like a E7add4, which is a totally different context and resolves neatly to A

yes! much better! i would put 0:43 up by an octave or 2. also, the beginning sounds amateurishly off key and kinda bland. Don't worry, I do the same and I think its because you listen to the loop over and over in your DAW so your ears get used to it.

All in all, there's potential for a nice ambient piece if you add some more synths to it. Good start if it's your first ambient. I especially liked 1:17
