That's fucking retarded. Early grime is very decidedly not hip-hop. Both it and hip-hop came out of Jamaican dancehall MCing and soundystem culture, but in very different ways and used to very different ends.

I'm fine if they decide that BNM should be a little more flexible tbqh. I remember there were a small handful of times their old sister site The Dissolve (rip) gave their BNM equivalent to movies they gave less than 4/5 stars. Sometimes something isn't "amazing" but notable and unique enough to deserve a "must listen to" tag. I guess TMT kinda does that with the Eureka tag right?

It seems like pitchfork is starting to cover stuff beyond just music. The example that jumps to mind is posting every fucking update of the new Twin Peaks series. Zero relevance to their identity as a music reviewing site, but could be indicative of a sift to culture as a whole.

Someone asked that in a Reddit AMA with the editors not too long ago and they said they don't have any plans to expand to general pop culture as of now. They've covered David Lynch's music for a long time so I think that's the connection to Twin Peaks (just like they cover stories about Atlanta because of Donald Glover). The Stranger Things coverage makes less sense though.

I'm guessing the news articles are what keep the lights on so they're broadening the scope.
