the vocals sound kind of uninspired/tired though I don't know if that's intentional to achieve a certain sound, mixing could be a bit better
the ideas are there but could definitely benefit from a higher budget
>>70691861
I'm not sure if I really like this to be honest. I feel like I could definitely enjoy it but there's a lot of filler, I do really love the atmosphere of Serrafin, the vocals seem really pained and real if that makes any sense

really cool, I'm not huge into post black metal, I kind of prefer the first wave and early second wave stuff but this is very cool. The drums sound really odd in the first track though. Is there a pad on the snare? It sounds muffled
Great vox though, hopefully you mix them higher in a full release.

Laborer guy here. I'm actually not sure what was going on with the drums in that recording. As far as vocals go, they're a lot louder in some of our other releases, especially our first rehearsal. If you enjoy first and second wave black metal, you might enjoy that one more. It's pretty lo-fi, compared to the second one.
Thanks for the review, though. Your feedback means a lot!

I appreciate the feedback, thank you for listening. I get that it could come off as filler, I was worried about that and have moved away from longer, more atmospheric pieces on subsequent work I'm doing. Taste is taste and I respect that but I will say that in the sense of filler meaning put in for the sake of putting it in or for time, that wasn't the case. It was written more or less as a sort of concept album about a bad experience with pain pills and addiction and I worked for a very long time on the ambient work and track sequencing to emulate that. Whether it works or not is up to the listener but it was made for a full album experience and if it failed it wasn't out of laziness. Just figured I'd explain where that was coming from.

I think that adding 2010s rap beats to it completely ruins the flavor and prevents it from appealing to me as a fan of 90s cyberpunk anime.
It's even worse when there's actual rapping in it.

Also Man-Machine Interface is one of the worst things to come out of the GitS franchise

>>70692073
Not sure if you want feedback but I loved it mostly so I wanna talk about this stuff. Some negative, but pedantic & entirely constructive.

Seriously love the production on this, it is clean & has a great, bright mood.

I'm on the fence about the vocals, they fit the style perfectly but come across like the singer straining at times. I would point out the track "Eurytion, Stuck Through the Side" here. Near to the beginning, the singer moves into higher tones that have a very strained and really uncomfortable tone. However, near to the end of the same track they hit a similar register with a tone that is very, very pleasant. The difference is very stark. The vocalist clearly knows how to hit high tones while maintaining a great tone, but fails to do it at times.

Still, I totally enjoyed this album. Wonderful stuff. Some very creative production moments that pulled it above a lot of usual quality indie folk afair. Keep it up! Hope you don't mind me poking my thoughts at you.

Q-pup here. Yeah I love getting feedback, certainly don't mind! That's interesting what you say about the vocals because I think I know what you mean but never really thought of it. I will have to go back and listen and investigate. I think I'm pretty happy with the vocals for the most part because I often personally enjoy that straining sound kinda (sort of adds character at least in songs I like it in). I can definitely understand it being abrasive at times though? And abrasive is definitely not the intention. Thanks for the feedback and the support, glad you listened and liked it and super appreciate the constructive criticism!
>>
>>70698205
The whole vocal thing is really hard to explain, but if you compare the tone of the voice at the 1:32 mark of Eurytion to the tone at 3:25, you should be able to hear a difference in timbre. That difference is what I mean. It's probably hard to hear, but one is quite crisp and the other is a bit more raspy. The raspy side is a result of, effectively, being too hard on your vocal cords and, this is going to sound weird, breathing wrong. The former is usually a result of the latter. Achieving a more aggressive/strained tone without stressing your voice is very difficult to do. Beyond investing hard in professional singing lessons or never going for that style of singing again, it doesn't actually hurt the album that much. It's just something that singers will notice, really.

I agree that tense vocals can add a lot, and I actually think it works on the album, but I'm a total pedant so hey what can I do.

I'd also suggest doing some volume compression & normalization, volume levels on a few tracks are lower than others (not quite noticeably, but I had a hunch and looked at it in an audio editor and I was right. Diving Bell in particular has a lower peak volume than other tracks.) and the volume spikes sharply in two or three moments.

At any rate, looking forward to future projects from you!

the demo session is myself and my friend(drums)
I don't know if it was intentional at all but I hear a lot of Larks Tongue in Aspic by King Crimson in the first track. The violin(?) and the drums remind me a lot of the build up on the first title track of Larks Tongue.
I really like it, it sounds to me like a psychedelic trip in the sense that its disorienting and very loose yet there's an unspoken tension hanging in the air. I will absolutely return to this for further listening

First impressions: Typeface choice for cover is atrocious. Using the same/very similar font for both subtitle + title (band name + album name) is sad.

Okay now that that's out of the way, listening.
>>
>>70715603
Oookay, actual feedback!

>General
Good feels. Pleasant listen for certain. The general thoughts are that this is some very nice stuff.

>Vocals
Your higher voice is nice, but when you start dipping into mixed & chest voice you hit a few off notes. A suggestion would be to work on some chest/mixed voice exercises to help strengthen your lower register. Your voice, in general, has a tone that fits this genre very well.

>Musical ideas
Album is very one-note in style, with a few exceptions. The bridge of Waltz My Life Away has a riff that feels out of place with the rest of this music. It is a bit dissonant, while everything else is relatively clean & simple in harmony. I would either like to hear more of this, or none at all. (Commit to an idea, or avoid it in the name of keeping your work consistent).

"Why Did I Wake Up Today?" feels like it really wants to modulate between bars but it doesn't and the musical result is something that is so very uncomfortable for me. That is, the melody of the line "Why did I wake up today?" when the song starts (and all subsequent repetitions of that theme) really hints at a change coming, but it doesn't arrive in for the line "I told you that I'd never say" etc. It is lightly delivered when it resolves on "Again" but it just isn't enough for what it promises imo. I have a hunch that it wants to move into a B minor chord here but I totally suck at identifying pitch by ear so I may be waaaay off and you'd have to experiment yourself.

Mostly though, I like this.
>>
>>70715603
Okay seriously something about WDIWUT is really bothering me musically and I have to figured it out :|. I played along with it and I think I was wrong about b minor I was totally wrong on what key I thought it was in.

Is the song/the opening chord in d major? If yes I think it wants to move into d minor for the 2nd bar. The vocal melody is really pulling it somewhere else than where it goes for me.

Gah, sorry, this type of thing doesn't happen often but when it does it gets me. Apologies for the madness.
>>
>>70715925
First off, I want to thank you for actually listening to it!
Second, Thanks a ton! I agree with you on my voice, I have been trying to expand my lower range since high school haha. I talk basically at the bottom of my voice and it goes up from there, so I have a hard time. But I definitely agree, I should look up some exercises for that.

I agree with your observation about the bridge, and I actually intend to do a lot more stuff similar to it, and stretching that a bit more. One of my personal problems with my EP is how single-mood it is, and I want to change up the feels and speeds while keeping the overall feel. I also want to add a bit more energy to the stuff, as I feel it's lacking there too.

I find your observation on Why Did I Wake Up Today? very interesting. As the songwriter things like that can be harder to spot. I'll mess around with it and see what I come up with. I'm relistening to it now.

Once again thanks a ton for the feedback and I'm really glad you liked it!
>>
>>70716042
>>70716043
I'm dumb, I meant f major/f minor. What I meant, just typed the wrong letter...

But ye, I'd suggest checking out groups like Long Fin Kille and The Van Pelt. They seem like bands that may be inspiring to you.
>>
>>70716075
yeah the song is actually in D standard so things should be pretty damn simple in that tuning. I'm a piano player more than a guitarist lol

I'll check them out. Thanks!
>>
>>70716092
>Thanks!
No problemo!

Other suggestions for music that may be inspiring, specifically in regards to exceptionally interesting chord progression, is Elliott Smith. His songwriting is very dynamic, even though it keeps a quite consistent mood.

My friend just got this project out, the concept is that the vocals are entirely from some speech synthesis software. Every different voice is supposed to be a fictional character from a mythical pyramid land. It's in french but there are some cool instrumentals here and there
