>>
>>70630241
Tutorials on YT, they'll be there
obtain a full version of whatever DAW you desire, any method is fine
Dick around in it for long periods of time, learn it until you know the DAW by heart

Do NOT save every little idea in their own file, you'll just create clutter. it may not be bad at first, but it becomes unmanageable.
>>
>>70630241
As far as musical talent goes, it's something you either end up having or you don't honestly. You could spend 5 years straight doing nothing but working on music and become a master or you could still be shit by the end. Of course, the only way to know is to just do it and find out. You can help yourself quite a bit by just learning as much as you can, watching videos, learning theory and how to use whatever technology you choose to use, and experimenting with new ideas. Lastly if you don't enjoy doing it don't even bother.

- why do they keep making bad looking synths when people have complained for years, is it someones wife made the design and they dont want to offend or what

I got a sampler that has individual outputs and a 'mixed output'

When I send a sound through an individual out via a TS cable to the soundcard instrument input, it sounds fine.

When I do the same with a mono cable using either of the mixed outputs, I get no sound but a painful screeching sound. Is this supposed to take a TRS to TS split only? Is it normal behaviour for screeching to be heard if you put a stereo jack output to a mono cable?
>>
>>70635134
Sounds like a sampled harp.
>>
>>70637231
Sometimes mono cables fuck shit up because they connect the two stereo pins internally which is not always calculated in with the circuit design.
>>
>>70637659
i need to know if mixed output means a single one of those outputs sends a combined l+r signal to a single cable, or if i've been sold something with destroyed outputs

you're overthinking it, make tracks and let them go. it's easy to mess shit up with so many parameters and knobs to turn... as for this track the piano at the beginning was too much and overpowering. id did find the breakdowns/drops to be interesting. @4:04 to the end reminded me of old school breakbeat

For headphones, you want something with a flat response. No "DJ" style headphones with added bass. TH02, I think, is a nice budget set

Anyone have any advice for me?

I am struggling with focus on anything I try and work on. I am hitting walls when writing lyrics o i make a very basic bassline for a track and then never touch it again.

I am attempting to look into other genres of music but I really want to make a specific genre.

I think what is stopping me is my inability to see what I am creating could be good and I am seeing so much negative in what I create and it makes me not want to continue with it.

Since SPDF is a digital signal, an example of using it would be to outsource the Digital to Analog conversion to a higher quality device.

In practice, an example would be, your interface is kinda shit in terms of Digital to Analog conversion. You use a SPDIF cable to run from your interface, carry the digital signal to a monitor controller with a higher quality Digital to Analog converter (maybe its a presonus central station, or similar device). In this way, you are bypassing a shittier conversion in favor of a bettter one.

You can also use SPDIF to transport two digital channels from another device to your interface. I use ADAT, another digital format, to transport 8 channels from my mic pre into my primary audio interface. You could do something similar with those SPDIF inputs.
>>
>>70658067
just listen to some songs you like and try to recreate them as closely as possible, you'll learn a lot about what makes a song work and it'll passively improve your workflow too, it's a really good exercise
for lyrics, don't make them overly specific or complicated and don't be afraid to write something that doesn't make sense, a lot of the more memorable lyrics in songs are the ones that make you go "wait what the fuck did he just say", for better or for worse

it's aimed at guitarists but same theory applies, diatonic chord theory (i.e. the relationship between chords, keys and scales or "how to pull chords from scales") is the most important thing to understand.

scales also help you understand melody

when it comes to arrangement, ask yourself what is your aim. are you trying to create a track with a strong melody? might want to emphasize on building a good lead synth. do you want a funky beat? might want to focus on bass melody and beats. for years i've been trying to make senseless sounds trying to make a texture that also functions like a bass, i only started to make progress when i started separating a synth for melody, a synth for texture etc

I tried it with a TRS to dual TS, the signal is only on the left TS cable, so it appears that the mixed outputs are mono and mixed just means sounds not assigned to individual outs

The mixer inside is obviously destroyed, guy claims he was just using it like a multitimbral rompler and never once used the main outputs which I highly doubt. He's shucking and jiving now about how the screeching is normal so I think he's trying to scam. >>

>>70662059
TRS to dual TS. So some kind of Y cable? I would still try TRS to TRS if you can, just to rule out that the cable is the problem in this equation. If its stereo unbalanced coming out of a TRS output, then using the wrong Y cable could cause a problem. What mixer is it? I may be able to answer more accurately.

It's not the cable, I tried the headphone output on the front with headphones and it's the exact same sound. The mixer or VCA or whatever it is inside the sampler I mean. It must be going through something different than the individual outs that's broken, he said himself that the individual outs bypass the internal digital mixer.

>>
>>70660163
with a lot of work you can make this sound pretty good yes, also vary up the chords a bit and structure it like a song, verse-bridge-chorus (x2) or whatever, right now it sounds more like a sketch.

lots of trial and error and reading through the manuals of all of my VST's and plugins and trying to understand how everything works starting from the fundamentals which is the waveform. as for theory I went to piano school when I was a kid and stayed there for like 10 years, been making tons of classical shit on paper before I even discovered the whole production aspect.

>>70660892
for theory you have to familiarize yourself with the notes and scales, just look that shit up even on Wikipedia, not that hard to grasp, but you should invest on a lil MIDI keyboard at least so you can see what you're doing.

for sound design/production/mixing go through all the manuals on your synths and try to understand every term they use, also tons of trial and error, keep experimenting with everything.

I think most of the people who "cant sing" actually just dont like the way their voice sounds, could be wrong tho.

tru

well anon I'm assuming your midi to usb cable is one of pic related

what you need to do is download the actual drivers for it, the windows generic drivers give problems when you're doing more complicated stuff over MIDI/USB. google

EmmP_PCDrv_L6_1_01_04

and download it from one of the links u see (I don't remember exactly from where I downloaded it so I'm not linking any pages)

good luck
>>
>>70663917
stop using that chink shit and you won't have that problem
>>
>>70664085
that chink shit works well enough in 98% of situations
>>
>>70664355
just not in this one
>>
>>70664410
well it does after an easy driver update, so it works 100% of the time

Okay, so I tried to download some of the books in the pastebin, but all of the mega.nz links say the file is no longer available. Is there another trusted to place to download or should I just google around.

It sounds like someone is dropping a ball on some chordophone at around 36 seconds in

Isn't this all sample based music? How do they do that

Prod i need help
I'm starting a noise-rock band and i need some help
I want to record a demo tape but i don't have enough money to rent out a studio so i'm recording it in my basement. All i have is a laptop with audactiy installed and a usb mic. Do i need more equipment or am i good with what i have? How should i record it?
>>
>>70665146
I connect to your mom via midi. driverless
>>
>>70665178
It's going to sound like shit with that set-up. If money is the issue, download a cheap DAW like Reaper, buy a cheap single input audio interface from craigslist or guitar center, look at the sticky for where to download free VSTs, and you will sound a million times better.

How can I change the chord progression after it repeats? Do I have to change key?
>>

Can any of you homos recommend me a good computer for music production? I've done a little research. I know Linux is out. I kind of don't want to buy a Mac but using Windows 10 seems more godawful. However I could build a Windows rig no problem. Im so lost. Help me /prod/.
>>

>Windows 10 seems more godawful

and why is that?
>>
>>70665772
I still have Windows 7 and I have no problems with compatibility
>>
>>70665772
>Linux
if you use bitwig you can use linux but probably only a shit distro like ubuntu

if you want mac without buying you should look into a guide for building hackintosh
>>
>>70665800
I haven't like windows very much since 8 came out. It was my impetus to switch to Linux.
>>70665841
Can you run reaper?
>>
>>70665772
I built my computer a year ago with windows 7. Works great.
>>
>>70665956
I run Reaper on windows 7 and it is amazingly efficient.

its this, more likely than not.

just sing a lot whenever and you get pretty ok at it. vocal lessons would help i guess but doesn't feel like a necessity. if u can make a track then u have the ear2 sing over it 2

Anyone use ardour? How do you like it?

im trying to make some energetic jumpy beats thats not too drop-focused, heres the intro

https://clyp.it/jlme4cgu

the chord progression imo sounds pretty unenergetic, any recommendations?
>>
>>70667751
that piano sounds depressing with those chords. trying major chords and adding chiptune-y sounds might work.
sounds pretty good so far
