I don't get No Wave. I've listened to this and it sounds nothing like I'd imagine No-wave to sound like. I thought no-wave was dark and miserable but that album is fun with a lot of sax.
>>
>>70626228
then listen to >>70626104 and >>70626146
>>
>>70626228

Yeah, it doesn't have the same miserable sound, but the lyrics are a little miserable, and of course everything is really uhhhh i can't think of a better phrase than "herky jerky," mess is probably a good description too.
>>
>>70626228
no wave is literally just punk bands that went the extra step and incorporated the avant garde into their sound.

It was a response to the fact that the New York punk scene was lauded as this revolutionary, experimental new movement, yet so many of the bands in the scene like Patti Smith and the Ramones were literally just doing conventional rock music. The no wavers decided they would literally be avant garde.
>>
I've always had this boner for no wave music, so much so that I've recently gotten into no wave film, is anyone else interested in that?

also not gonna lie Public Castration is a pretty damn good no wave album
>>
>>70626390

no wave film? I'm interested.
>>
>>70626390
A little bit. All those short films by Nick Zedd and stuff used to be available free online, though I honestly haven't checked back for it in years. There was a decent documentary on that movement - interestingly, Steve Buscemi and Jim Jarmusch basically got their start in that scene
>>
>>70626074
Literally the only worthy album on the no-wave scene.
>>70626118
Bretty gud, but it isn't no-wave
>>
>>70626514
yes it fucking is. Rosa Yemen was literally a no wave band. Lizzy Mercier Descloux was Richard Hell's fiancé, and his band, the Voidoids, along with Suicide, were basically the two major CBGB bands that were mentors to the no wave scene.
>>
Badmoon is the best sonic youth album
>>
>>70626599
Correct
>>
>>70626390

I'd like to watch some No Wave cinema beyond Fingered, but it's very hard to find. Do you know any good resources?
>>
Kill your Idols a really good documentary about the scene

because 4chan is really insecure about women and feminism, and Lydia is an incredibly obnoxious pseudo-feminist with really dumb ideas, so naturally when you expose a bunch of guys who are afraid of feminism to the most obnoxious, loud, retarded feminist you can find, they effectively just start screaming
>>
>>70627755

It's literally impossible to find 99% of No Wave films outside of Karagarga (ultra-elitist arthouse movie tracker that is extremely hard to get into) or indie theater screenings.
>>
>>70628078

she has a nice voice tho
>>
http://www.ubu.com/film/transgression.html

Here's an archive of the Cinema of Transgression, which is what no wave cinema evolved into. Some of it's cheesy, low grade horror, some of it's basically porn, and some of it's basically John Waters-style
>>
>>70628081
How hard is it to get into Karagarga?
I'm thinking something like power user on BTN, right?
I want to get into it because I really need some early jap films
>>
>>70628421

Like two years PU on PTP iirc. They used to recruit from wcd as well but, well, you know.

If you join some avant-teen clique somewhere, you might impress them enough to get an invite.

The place is apparently a goldmine, but you need to maintain a 3.0 ratio or some other ridiculous number.
>>
>>70628421
You really don't need it, if you're just looking for some Kurosawa or Ozu flicks you can find them anywhere, KG is for the movies that only 10 people have rated on imdb and is impossible to find a copy of outside the net.
>>
>>70627664
>>70627497
just got home, bout to upload the 2 movies i have and find a couple links, gimme a minute
>>
>>70628565

It's definitely a necessity if you want any really early stuff - Kurosawa's and Ozu's early shorts included.

And if you want any movies from Thailand, Iran, Armenia etc. that aren't the super mainstream ones, Karagarga is still the ONLY resource that exists outside international film festivals that you probably are no rich enough or connected enough to get an invitation to.

It's definitely not worth it if you're not super into obscure movies, though. You're basically required to invest a significant amount of money into donations and seedboxes just so you don't get kicked out (unless, of course, you're one of the elite of the website who runs a theater or is a director).
>>
>no one mentions Glenn Branca

come on now.

>>70629227
whats the story behind it?
>>
>>70628754
Dude, the Ascension and Lesson No. 1 are definitely No Wave and probably the best things in the genre.
>>
>>70629227

Up until the internet was born, nobody really bothered to hold onto independent films because film takes up a shitload of space.

Hell, for the longest time Dreyer's masterpiece was considered lost forever until it was found in a storage cabinet in an old insane asylum.
>>
>>70627453
slowdive lp4 when
>>
isn't this whole genre a contrarian punk-rock? not to mention how edgy it is...
>>
>You will never see step foot in seedy late 70s NYC and watch a bunch of experimental porn flicks with a bunch of heroin addicts

Why even live?
>>
>>70629344
they can be considered no wave by association, but they were released after the scene died.

>>70629431
no wave is basically Lydia Lunch and her friends circa 1978. those groups have some things in common, but it was more of a scene rather than just contrarian punk-rock.
>>
>>70629431
its easy to see it as that from the outside, but when you pay a little more attention to that you begin to see how influential it is, quite a few big names actually came out of the no wave movement (steve buscemi, michael gira, and sonic youth). And while yes, it is kind of edgy that is sort of the appeal to it. It's not contrarian by any means, its just the avant-punk movement coming from a time when most punk music was very barebones and quite boresome to say the least.

>>70629485
this makes me sad
>>
>>70629581
hahaha i actually find lydia lunch a bit of a joke and prefer the more individualistic no wave stuff.
still tho she is quite laughable
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E92qnnRlQ2w
>i dont give a diddly shit, friend
cracks me up every time
>>
>>70629581
If you take away Glenn Branca the entirety of "no wave" is about three 45s and that Contortions album.
>>
>>70629599

Not to mention that

>R.L. Crutchfield went on to become one of the first minimal wave artists
>Ikue Mori has been consistently involved in avant-garde music for decades
>Arto Lindsay became a major pop composer in Brazil while still utilizing extended techniques
>Tim Wright played bass in Pere Ubu
>>
>>70629721
this, although i do not know much about that (i've only recently become interested in the idea of no wave)
and please correct me if im wrong, was Brian Eno not a part of the movement?
>>
>>70629749

Brian Eno was in NYC producing for Talking Heads when he heard about a concert going on where a bunch of weird obscure bands were playing. It was a festival in support of a magazine I believe (No Wave had multiple zines that are major collectors' items today), and Eno arrived on the last day where James Chance, DNA, Theoretical Girls, Mars and Teenage Jesus and the Jerks were playing

Eno thought it was cool and made an album - Theoretical Girls were going to be on it but something came up IIRC. No New York released later on a major label, and the sudden attention the scene got sort of killed it.
>>
>>70629655
lydia lunch fucking sucks, but she was the central figure of the scene.
>>70629663
"no"
there are a lot of other no wave bands that recorded their music like the lounge lizards, rosa yemen and rhys chatham
>>
>>70629820
That is pretty cool, i understand how some might call the movement edgy or contrived, but imho its one of the most interesting scenes in music, it just has so much personality and atmosphere for the lack of a better word

>>70629844
yeah honestly fuck lydia lunch. My favorite from the scene are probably the drummer from DNA; the qt3.14 asian, michael gira, and jean michel basquiat
>>
>>70629844

Has anyone fucked more talented people than Lydia Lunch?

>Every early Sonic Youth member including Kim probably
>Arto Lindsay
>Michael Gira
>Glenn Branca
>Numerous arthouse directors
>That tall guy in the Lounge Lizards with the weird face
>James Chance
>Boris Policeband
>That violin guy with the weird visor

I also bet good money on hatesex with Nardwuar
>>
I hope Nardwuar interviews Glenn Branca someday
>>
>>70629254
http://www.shockcinemamagazine.com/long.html

the director died in a car accident weeks after the film's release
>>
>>70630802
yeah, i read into that, it was horrible to hear, but why is it that we'll never see it? is it just because its incredibly rare like alot of the no wave films, or has something happened to the copies of it?
