I showed my friend who is a drummer a zach hill clip and he said he is shit because he has no dynamic control, he's just flailing.

is Zach Hill a good drummer?
>>
>>70599293
Didnt know your friend was end all and be all of drummers.
>>
he's super fast but it doesn't make him good
>>
>>70599293
no he isn't

but his stuff in hella was excellent
>>
Speed doesn't equal talent.
>>
Your friend sounds like a tool basing his skill off of a video of him playing live
>>
>>70599293
Zach is a above average drummer, but he has the speed, which is what makes him sound impressive, still Zach does have god tier moments like the drumming in Niggas On The Moon
>>
>>70599320
Tbh I don't know if my friend is that great - he went to music college for drums tho
>>
yeah because dynamic control is what you need when playing with fucking hella and death grips

tell your friend that if zach was playing like that in a jazz band, yeah it's not correct. but when he's essentially using the drums as a lead instrument in hella, or perfectly complimenting ride's vocals in DG, it works very well
>>
reminder zachs best project was this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mpce4jcTU-E
>>
Update: I showed him 'Better get a broom' by Hella.
he said "its dreadful, it takes some skill to be that fast, but truth is,no one scares about speed. its style you want"
>>
>>70599442
then said "if you want shredding, but good shredding, check this out: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HZPXMeFOmNk
one of my fav vids around of a guy showing off but still with style"

hmm
>>
>>70599442
>zach hill doesn't have style
what??
>>
>>70599476
Op here. I just watched the video and it's a jazz drummer... is my friend autistic?
>>
>>70599510
Maybe but both drummers are good your is defintely pretentious
>>
>>70599481
I dont know what to think now... is zach hill a meme or is my friend a meme?
>>
its irrelevant. only matters what the final result sounds like
>>
>>70599586
Zach Hill isn't a meme
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qlJ_pjwBYxY
>>
Asking a board that has no respect for drums about anything related to drumming is retarded. Zach Hill and Brian Chippendale are in the same boat. Impressive but not that technically skilled. But they don't need to be for what they do. Personally I think Chippendale is a better drummer.
>>
>>70599916
>Impressive but not that technically skilled
[citation needed]

just because hill can't play polyrhythms or jazz drums doesn't make him "not technically skilled"
>>
>>70600076
I was just giving my take on it. No need to get upset. Your Hillfu still exists.
>>
>>70599586
tell your friend to listen to this

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=62NMHPGElWo
>>
>>70599293
He may not do play drums in an incredibly complicated manner, but his level of creativity is hard to find elsewhere.
>>
If he's capable of dynamic control but opts not to utilize that skill because it's not appropriate, that doesn't mean he's a bad drummer lacking in dynamics. However, if he's actually just incapable of control, then he's a poor drummer.

Which of those is the truth?
>>
>>70599476
ok that's actually really impressive. I like zach hill a lot, but I think that guy's more interesting to listen to.
>>
>>70599586
Your friend is a normie drummer that is put off by someone that does things differently.

No shit he isn't dynamic, so what? Does your friend think he can replicate what Zach does? Ask him to familiarize himself with a few Death Grips songs then tell him to watch this practice clip.

https://youtu.be/vgzSP05q0as
>>
if your friends for drums it was most likely for commercial or jazz music. so to yourt friend zach probably seems just fast and weird. im a jazz drummer and i was in a few school bands. i think zach is good, his style is definetly signiture to himslef. im not sure how good he would be trying to play jazz. but also think if you put a jazz drummer is his place they probably wouldnt know what to do. i think he is talented
>>
keith moon had nowhere near the ability or technique of top drummers but had a unique style of playing

objectively bad, but considered an all time great
>>
If you guys want to see some really difficult drumming just look up any DCI marching baseline.
Basically playing an incredibly difficulty snare solo split between 4 to 7 people
>>
Post your favorite drummers
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KlJZeJqwisg
>>
nigga have you ever done a drum roll?
>>
>>70600076
He does play polyrhythms though
>>
>>70600076
well honestly it does. Sure he's as skilled as anyone else who taught themselves and can play basic rudiments.

But tell him to play a paradiddlediddle fill in 7/8 over the barline he'll be lost as fuck.

Tell him to play a shuffle in 13/16 and he'll just sit there looking at his sticks.

Show him take 5 by dave rubek and he'll throw his sticks across the room
>>
>>70601354
what are you a trained monkey or some shit?
>>
>>70601375
no, i'm not even saying that if you can't do all that you aren't a good drummer, i'm not saying if you can do all of that you can make good sounding music.

I'm just saying he's no where near the status quo for being a "technically skilled drummer" There's millions of professional drummers who can do all of that off the top of their heads.
>>
>>70599293
He's physically skilled, but that doesn't make him musically skilled.
>>
>>70601430
he's really not physically skilled tho. All of his rudiments are RLRLRLRLRLRLRL
>>
>>70601440
I can't say either way, I'm not a drummer, but I'm not surprised.
>>
>>70601416
you just can't follow diddle redistribution across the kit
>>
>>70601354
You're saying he can't do things based entirely on the things we know he can do.
You can't say any of this unless you've actually tasked him with these and had him fail
>>
>>70601468
but thats just an example, theres so much more he's missing. He's vanilla plain and simple in his technique which is what the argument is.
>>
>>70599293
Your friend already answered your question, OP. Are you dumb?
>>
>>70599476
jfc

dude on the keys killed it as well.
>>
>>70601354
>>70601416
Listen to Voila

https://youtu.be/qlJ_pjwBYxY

You mean to tell me there's no technical prowess to that beat whatsoever? He's just a brainless monkey beating his sticks fast?
>>
>>70601481
I do know, I've known ALOT of drummers in my life seeing as i've been drumming for 18 years. I've given alot of lessons and I've seen people play after learning new techniques.

No one plays the way zach plays if they know and practice all the techniques we just talked about.

Put it this way, if you were skilled and knew a vast amount of techniques why would you NEVER incorporate them and continue to play like someone who's never been taught a day in their life ? And don't answer "its his style" adding in those techniques doesn't hurt your style unless your style is literally sounding like someone who taught themselves how to play drums out of a book for 2 years.
>>
>>70601589
...that's a drum machine
>>
>>70599293
>is Zach Hill a good drummer?
Yes, but mainly when he's doing something other than the flailing, which doesn't come out of him as often as I'd like to hear, and when it does it's usually in lousy bands. Whatever it's his style.

The guy is certainly talented but of any drummer why he's so revered on this board I have no idea. Maybe the flailing and the bloody fingers look impressive to non drummers or something.
>>
>>70601589
it's just RLRLRLRLRLRL rudiments in a slightly syncopated break beat, also sounds like alot of computer editing.

No, it's played on e-drums, everything in fact is, on that album.
>>
>>70601699
*v-drums
>>
>>70599293
I'm a drummer and I love Zach Hill. That said, he isn't always good. When he plays deliberatley and it sounds great, but occasionally he lets the noise out and just plays to hit as many drums as he can in a second.
>>
>>70601637
https://youtu.be/tG50qWw66rA?t=1

What about this then? You can't be pleased, faggot.

Also, hard to know how much editing took place, but that album is all v-drums.
>>
>>70600591
This.
>>70599293
Does your friend like to play ac/dc and guns and roses?
>>
>>70599293
That's not the point of what he's doing when he plays in that style. As if ANYONE could do that with good control, if they could do it at all.
>>
>>70601802
basically if I was able to play it 10 years ago, it's not good. So no, this really isn't that great. If you want something amazing listen to this

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lVbTTmEmDxY

and this

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lVbTTmEmDxY
>>
>>70601354
This is right.

It's what happens with self-taught musicians. They only sound good to untrained ears.

Having said that, each musical style is to some point a world on its own. Axl Rose piano skills are average at best, but he is not giving a piano concerto, and it blends good enough with the songs.
I'd apply the same principles. I don't like Death Grips, but the drumming more often than not fits very well.
>>
>>70601904
>>70601802
sorry i sound like an asshole i forgot to explain why its really not impressive compared to other drummers:

One reason, it's the same pattern over and over and over and over just on different drums. He literally practiced one pattern to be able to do that and theres no dynamics.
>>
I'm a college learned drummer and generally a percussionist: take everything a drummer says with a grain of salt because if it's not Buddy Rich, Copeland, Bruford, Bozzio etc they're going to say they suck.
Drummers are morons.
If it has the correct effect, they're good.
>>
>>70601440

'Physically skilled' has nothing to do with rudiments. Being able to play that hard that fast with incredible stamina without harming oneself is a testament of skill in and of itself. Look at the whipping motion in his hand movement, that's physical skill. Zach actually plays incredibly diversely combining RLK patterns with doubles, paraddidles and doublekicks. There's another practice video that clearly shows the beaters fast strikes in correlation with handrolls.
>>
>>70601904
Your references to other works and jazz are the most trite shit. Who hasn't seen a Buddy Rich video before, or heard Take Five....

Zach Hill is not Buddy Rich, he isn't trying to be, he's doing something ENTIRELY different from these people. Would you complain that a lo-fi record is shit because it doesn't have the same crisp audio of other albums out there?

You just sound boring with this shit.

Fun Fact:

Zach Hill's old man was also a drummer
>>
>>70602050
>Fun Fact
You lied
>>
okay so yeah music school people like to shit on zach these days which is funny bc like before death grips when zach was lesser known he/hella were hip and you like got respect if you knew who he was. now that he's popular he totally lacks dynamic control and plays waayy too much and isn't tasteful and stuff hahaha. I don't agree with that but it's what people say. I think Zach is a great drummer and his drum arrangement-y stuff in Death Grips is amazing like doing computer-y sounds with human feel its like aphex or something but taken to this new human place which i think is really unique. he has such a particular feel too that anybody that tries to sound like him comes across like "oh he's trying to do Zach Hill" you know. he's an original i think. also i wouldn't say it's 'flailing' i mean it's indulgent a lot but there's always like some rhythmic idea that he's developing like it's always going in a direction he's constantly doing new ideas and stuff. also he's influenced a fuck ton of people like he's been doing his style for over a decade and stuff and only in the last like 2 years all of a sudden everybody and their brother has a youtube video of them playing drums all fast and zach-hill-ish. i tend to feel like whether you know it or not you're influenced by zach hill.
>>
>>70601941
Went to Steve White's workshop and he said essentially the same thing. Drummers play for the music and nothing else.

Even your top jazz specialists aren't playing high fidelity complex rhythms to show off, it's required to support the genre.
>>
>>70602050
is that a picture of Dennis Wilson?
>>
>>70601354
Former percussionist/rudimentfag here, you don't know what you're talking about. If you described to him how to play any of these he could do so easily. Take 5 is very basic jazz drumming.

have you listened to hella or notm? he plays in odd time signatures with polyrhythms all over the place. Shuffle patterns aren't difficult, playing in 7/8 isn't difficult. You seem to think that knowledge of music theory = technical drum skill. If you brought up drumming by elvin jones or weckl or some shit you could back up your argument, don't use take 5 lol

>>
>>70601354

as a person who studied music in one of the best music schools in the country. you are dumb, you might have to explain those things to him but it would take him like 10 minutes max to understand them then he'd do it perfect. funny though, the last line about take 5 is a punchline hahaha
>>
>>70599293
Wow, his hair's getting mighty thin innit?

>>70599370
how does he like working at starbucks?
>>
>>70599442
>>70599476
He's not totally wrong
People overrate Zach a lot because he can slam the drums so fast but it's appropriate for the music he's making (I doubt your friend would listen to fucking Drive Like Jehu and say they need better dynamic control) and you would probably have to look pretty hard to find a more skilled rock drummer playing music today
