It's hard to "get" now, it was a proper subculture thing, cheese intended. Also OP's picture is hilariously wrong, tailored suits, black ties and wingtip shoes were the fashion.

i just don't know what i did to deserve this
>>
>>70588497
>in jazz band

yeah stick to that. ska punk is terrible
>>
>>70588521
i mean we both were in the band, i just figured i'd play with him outside of class.

it wasn't the worst thing ever, we just jammed for a couple hours a week. shit music, but apparently the gig would've been 2000 people if it had went through. it eventually went to berklee kids but i guess it was worth a try. the practices were pretty fun
>>
>>70588521
>>70588497
I don't know that I agree. I mean yeah, ska sucks, but I find that too many modern jazz bands, especially among students, are noodly bullshit that either come off cheesy or muddling and "cool", which is just as bad. I think trying to play in a band in a rock, or even avant garde/electronic setting might be more satisfying... unless you can find a legit bebop group or big band to play in.

On a vaguely related note, I've always been into punk, especially post-hardcore, and lately I've been really into crust punk. But in the last couple years I've gotten really into hard bop stuff like Art Blakey, Charles Mingus, Wayne Shorter, and Lee Morgan. I think "jazz-rock" bands with saxes and trumpets can be really cheesy and gimmicky, but I'd be really interested in applying a sort of bebop structure and format to a distorted, noisy rock (crust/post-hardcore-inspired) set up. I find I get very similar things from these types of rock and jazz - strong mood, a desperate, wild sound, expressiveness/emotiveness
>>
>>70588590
>big band to play in

Well that's the end goal right? Of course student bands may have a bit of musical wankery but that'll pass.

Might be being narrow minded - I'm a drummer and orchestral playing is my dream.
>>
>>70588590
>come off cheesy
why do you assume this will happen? or that it will be alleviated when noise/hardcore elements are added?

really, the only drawbacks i saw to the jazz band i was in was inexperience and lack of jazz knowledge (which i was a contributor to). people just genuinely didn't have enough experience with jazz playing to solo well. they didn't know the scales well enough and it came off very badly (me included for a while). the class was a learning experience, and it was genuinely fun as fuck. i don't regret it at all
>>
>>70588716
Because when you throw horns into rock bands, it sometimes sounds gimmicky. I think you could do it right, and some have, including the Stooges on Funhouse, the Pop Group on Y, and a jazzy post-punk group called the Laughing Clowns, but it seems difficult to properly integrate it into a natural sound.
>>
>>70588832

It's certainly possible.
>>
>>70586424
The Specials are GOAT
>>
People who hate ska hate fun
>>
>>70588832
you're citing jazz rock, idk what your point is. we were playing traditional bebop/big band/modal stuff, horns were necessary

if anything my guitar was the extraneous piece
>>
>>70588934
This
>>
>>70588898
That song's a good example. I actually really like The Jam and I think they used horns really nicely on the song Ghosts, but still when they use horns on this song, even though it sounds nice, it feels like a sort of gimmicky throwback to 60s soul music, which given Weller's interest in motown is what I'm sure it is.
>>
>>70588955
My bit about starting a crusty jazz-punk band wasn't really commenting on you anymore. I was talking about my own interests.
>>
>>70588920

I used to like Operation Ivy a lot back in the day. I was probably like 13. Kind of cringe on those times. No hate for ska fans tho, whatever floats your boat.
>>
ska is probably one of the worst genres out there imo
>>
>>70586081
Youll say this about anco and nmh in like 5 yrs tops
>>
I wanna skank to some fast 1st or 2nd wave ska now.
>>
Oh and check out the Pannonia Allstars Ska Orchestra, Laurel Atkin, No Sports and The Kingpins. Also Mad Caddies if you like Ska-Punk.
>>
>>70585765
I hate it. Not only do I find the instrumentation obnoxious, the very subculture fosters retards. Whether it's the stupid skanking or flatulent trumpets blaring over gimpy downstrokes, everything about Ska Punk is thoroughly unpleasant.

Personal experience has also led me towards completely hating this kind of music. I went to school with a Nerd Chad who was boy king of this dorky-ass bitch clique. He regularly extolled socialist platforms as he lived in complete comfort thanks to Mommy and Daddy's respectively lucrative careers as medical doctors. Blonde haired and blue-eyed, he'd also boast of his Venezuelan heritage and routinely tout the success of Chavez's regime. Hypocrisy oozed out of every pore of his body. The bastard wouldn't know what it meant to be working class if the ghost of Emma Goldman shit on his head.
