Here's my take. The Smiths without Morrissey and plus, say, Joey Ramone, would have been one of the greatest bands ever. Instead they kinda suck.

Kurt had painstakingly fantastic vocals. His gritty tone is easily imitated, but impossible to replicate. Like, literally a million dollar voice.
