Why is this so popular?
cause broadway musicals are corny as hell
culturally significant and people love musicals

It makes self-hating white liberals feel good about themselves

In the Heights was a better story without being overtly political. I don't personally think the stage is a place for activism but whatever
For what it's worth, looking at just the music, it's certainly unique though, combining broadway show tunes style music with Hip Hop. The result's this kinda cheesy but overthetop as fuck approach to hip hop, but done in a completely different style than that of someone like say...Soulja Boy who also does cheesy and overthetop.
We are obligated to listen to exactly one counter-cultural musical a decade, and Hamilton won that lottery.
Last decade it was Avenue Q. The 90s were RENT.

There's nothing counter culture about Hamilton...

Musicals are popular again and this one happens to be built around hip hop which is also very popular.

I don't mean political in the sense that they're encouraging people to vote for Hillary, but there's a lot of lines that point towards an agenda.

What agenda? Hamilton pissed off both hard left and hard right people for different reasons.
