It's a beautiful day

The point of these threads is to encourage people to look for new and interesting music. We do this by listening to and ideally discussing albums we've never heard before. Many of us already listen to new music daily, these people are in it to venture "out of their comfort zone" by listening to albums they otherwise wouldn't have, or just to have a good time.

Back on my SHIT bitch:

>Twa Toots - The Peel Sessions
Twee pop so I didn't like it. Tracks 1 and 3 were alright and I enjoyed some of the jangle-ier aspects I guess but also pretty annoying.
5

>Sesame Street - Bert's Blockbusters
Nothing amazing, but pretty fun anyways. It's not super long, and growing up with this show made me actually somewhat excited for this album. Honestly, even though it isn't incredible, I laughed a lot listening to this. I swear it's impossible to listen to this without cracking up at least once.
6

>ELO - Out of the Blue
Liked more than I expected, but this style of mega over-orchestration really bothers me. Stand out good tracks were Mr. Blue Sky,
Turn to Stone, and sections of
Concerto for a Rainy Day. Otherwise, the abundance of orchestral use in this pop context bothers me sometimes, and felt really tasteless at times.
5

>ELO - A New World Record
Like the before record, but shorter, more consistent, and, in general, slightly more tasteful use of violins. Telephone Line is for sure the stand-out track for these guys that I heard. All in all nothing incredible, but I could see someone who enjoys this style of pop rock more than I do get something more out of this than I did.
6

>The Dead Milkmen - Big Lizard in My Backyard
Not as good as cowpunk rivals like Meat Puppets or Femmes, but a lot of genuinely hilarious comedic tracks like "Bitchin' Camero". Anyone who usually finds themselves enjoying most of spork could probably get something out of this.
6

>Various Artists - The Big Lebowski
Maybe one of the best compilations of songs in a really popular film??? I'm not HUGE on TBL really, but this soundtrack has a line-up like none other: Dylan, Beefheart, Costello,
Yma Sumac, Moondog, Nina Simone,
Townes Van Zandt, Meredith Monk, and more. A lot of comments were complaining about the lack of CCR, but I'm glad. I'm also glad "Hotel California"' was replaced by a faster, better, flamenco-pop rendition. Just a good mixtape, really.

>David Bowie - No Plan
A good song from Blackstar and three whatever songs.
6

>La Monte Young - The Well-Tuned Piano
A mix between an amazing, truely mind-numbing experience and an inexcusable runtime. 6 fucking hours. That would be five goddamn LPs lmao. Seriously though, I was confused by this concept at first like, "Is this it?" But listening to even just one section of this is disorienting as all hell. I enjoyed the second half the most making the album more bearable as the experience becomes even more exhausting and disorienting. One of the few western albums I've ever heard to use microtonal elements to a very full extent. To be fair, I did take an hour or so break in the middle of this album, but I still would argue I got the jist of it regardless.
7

>Diamanda Galás - Plague Mass
Like many of her others, this acapella live-album is extremely unnerving and evil. A really powerful performance that appealed to me exactly zero.
6

>Van der Graaf Generator - Pawn Hearts
wtf this is bad. I liked some of the jazzier elements, especially with the inclusion of sax and flutes, but that's about it. Really, a hodgepodge of prog puke and not much else.

I'll need to give this a second listen, but my first impression is that there's a lot of good stuff here and it could be 4.5/5 if there wasn't so much time spent on sound effects, dialogue, etc. Just feels like time wasting, turning a great 42 minutes into a bloated 52. But the 42 minutes is really enjoyable sample-based grooviness, somewhere between Endtroducing and Mouth Silence. Happy to listen again and hopefully change my mind about the filler.

I find it hard to believe that these guys used to exhibit immaculate technique in their sprawling and progressive baroque-pop songs. I was busy exploring russian post-punk
But I'm also only one album behind on my 2017 chart, hooray
Finally the great stuff is coming in, Avec Le Soleil is back with a potentially even better album then their first one. Quite similar approach and style. I'm in love with the vocal effects and the groovy rhythm and texrure throughout the whole thing, the short noise sections was a bit unnecessary but didn't really ruin anything either

And why is He's Got the Whole This Land Is Your Land in His Hands rated so low on rym? It's great indie rock, post-rock, idk, the second song is one of the best tracks from this year
I have to check out their prior releases

Then there's a pretty lovely collab of Shakleton and Vengeance Tenfold, I haven't heard enough from these or from the genre to really compare it

Rest was meh, new Foxygen is awful for the most part

Gimme good albums from this year if you have them!

James Blake - s/t

As somebody who's a fan of Ambient Pop and Future Garage, I would've figured this album would at least be something I enjoy. But I can't say that.

I found this album drifting between three different responses from me. I'd either have virtually no emotion to a song because it was boring, I'd be annoyed at the overuse and abuse of vocal effects and on rare occasions I'd enjoy something. As said, the latter of those four were rare, but they did happen like on "The Wilhelm Scream" which had an interesting instrumental and decent vocal work. But then there were tracks like "Unluck" and "To Care (Like You)" which instrumentally while not bad the vocals completely killed anything the tracks had going for them.

The overall vibe felt like it was trying to execute something in between Bjork's Homogenic and Kanye's 808s and Heartbreak. The problem is, it struck an unnatural balance that ruined most of what those albums had going for them.

Although I wasn't ready to be blown away by this album, I'd say this has to be one of the most unexpectedly negative responses I've had during this listen through outside of Royal Trux and Nirvana.

Album Rating: 3/10

1/10 is nowhere near fair. The implication is music doesn't get worse than that? Turn on a random radio station and see if you don't eventually hear worse music. I might call that a reactionary rating. Just because it's a popular, critically acclaimed album you don't like?

Sorry if it sounds mean. I just think people should have more realistic perspective about ratings.
>>
>>70540132
I don't actively seek out bad music, my rating scale is adjusted over time. The lowest rating is the worst album I've heard at that point in time.

A 10/10 doesn't mean perfect and a 1/10 doesn't mean everything is broken, it means those are my favorite and least favorite things.

Also I genuinely don't like that album at all. But that's a whole other conversation.

if you turn on the radio you'll certainly find more melodic, generally appealing, well-produced, -sung and -arranged, probably even more original songs than anything on Benji which only has going for it that it's personal, i.e. more of an ideological reasoning than if you took any of the other criteria

Let's break this down.

>more melodic, generally appealing, well-produced, -sung and -arranged, probably even more original
Most of these are just descriptors for radio pop though. If this is the methodology you use to assess music, then right, there's no reason to listen to anything but like Beyonce and top 40 radio. This isn't my methodology at all though.

>well-produced
Debatable. I'd argue that on Benji especially the intimate production matches the themes perfectly.

>well-sung
Again, same point as above. If we're talking about radio pop music, yeah, those musicians are selected for their voices and appearance. But it doesn't mean that their voices automatically fit any genre/album better.

>more original
I disagree if we're talking about radio pop. But also, it's a folksy music. It's not about trailblazing. I'd also argue that the lyrics are indeed pretty original

>you have no ground to assume that
You're right, but I'm very cautious to believe if/why in a whole wide world full of music someone genuinely thinks an album is 1/10
>>
>>70540760
>>70540770
I thought the suggestions feature would be worth checking out for a few quid but it seems I was probably wrong.

>Can - Tago Mago
The news came out of nowhere. Jaki Liebezeit died today, that is the 22th of January, of pneumonia. The man being 78 years old, having lived a very long life, probably died without any regrets, or at the very least, died having done a myriad of things thorugh out his life span. More than an artist, or a drummer, or a legend, Jaki, at least to my very own eyes, was always a very dedicated man, and a visionary of the thousands of currents music would take. It is in his huge catalog of albums where his soul rests now. but in my humble opinion, it's this album where he trascended, not only as a musician but also as a human, where his imagination and creativity left such a print, at least in my life, that it almost felt as if he had make a very special gift, designed only for me. A masterpiece of such beauty that i often find myself wondering "how did they do it?". For that, the only thing i can do, in memory of this man, is to review the album

Tago Mago is possibly one of the most important albums in the history of rock music. The creativity, the technique and the sheer beauty displayed here would, probably without the band's knowledge, influence a huge amount of artists that would come after them. Be it Public Image Ltd, Bowie, Joy Division or even Radiohead, there is always a little "Can" sound to it. The things they did in those albums, the way they changed entirely how we made rock music is just one of the many things the band accomplished, and this an obvious matter.

The first song we are presented on this album is none other than the famous "Paperhouse". This track starts with a little bit of radio static, to tehn abruptly change into what i believe is one of the most iconic riffs in the history of rock music. The work of Karoli's mastery is evident on this track. But there is another man in this track who lets his presence be noted in the very first few seconds of the song, in such a calmed, yet imponent way, the musical behemoth known by the name of Kenji "Damo" Suzuki starts singing some lines that, perhaps because of my terrible hearing, i can't quite understand. Then, like a thunderstorm, the track progresses into an undescribable madness, where the man who we conmemorate today shows what he is capable of doing. The craze that is quietly orchestrated by mr Jaki Liebezeit is, by all means, a proof of the man Liebezeit was. By the end of this track, i knew that this was going to be an experience.

Moving on to the 2nd track "Mushroom Head" we are presented with quite a spacey drumming, and a seemingly erratic guitar playing, all of this giving quite a creepy vibe, which is amplified by the demented singing of Damo. Singing what can only be described as cryptic cursses and whispers, Damo makes even the strongst of men shiver a little from the utter creepiness of the song. This track, which is one of the shortest ones, is at the same time one of the most shocking. But it was merely a foreshadowing of what would come next

"Oh Yeah" starts a rollercoaster ride that can only be described through feelings and vague descriptions of the sounds that will emerge from the album, sounds that will forever be ingrained in the depths of my mind. With what sounds like some noisey, underwater explosion, the album quickly changes into a progressive rock track that would make Robert Fripp drop his jaw in awe. And if he didn't, it was because of the size of his ego. Jaki starts drumming a beat over which the whole song would be cemented, transformed and presented. with the inclusion of the Holger's bassline, one that is so mystic and powerful that it resembles a rocket ship taking off into the vast space. Damo is, as always, reinventing his singing. This time his singing is set on reverse, and after the song progresses, the singing is turn back to normal, but, to our surprise, he starts singing. The song progresses into an explosion of sound, depicitng a travel through our universe on a magical spaceship, something straight out of a Jules Verne book. But this was merely the beginning. Oh yeah was merely an introduction to what would come afterwards.

the 4tth track "Halleluwah" is without a doubt, the culmination, reinvention, deconstruction, perfection and simply put, transcendence from what existed in rock music. It's a song where we would call the players heros, angels, demigods, or whatever other name we would give to these ensemble of men. The pure genius that is presented in this song is present in possibly every single second of the 18:31 experience that we are about to witness. Jaki Liebezeit would let you transcend the corporeal plane through his playing, Irmin Schmidt would reinvent himself and show a progression similar to that of the creation and formation of the universe, Karoli would be assisted by god in his miracolous playing, as if he just had an epiphany and had visited our lord's kingdom, Damo is possesed by a spirit, be it a demon or a benevolent ghost, and would tore his throat out for the song, and Holger, now transfigured into Atlas, holds all of this world of explosions with a droning riff that would make earth itself shake. This would progress into a final ecstatic blow of energy marked by Damo singing the famous line HALLELUWAH. We are left either in tears, or laughter out of the pure and simply divine explosion that we were graced with, of which we can only be forever thankful either to the stars or to god, to let us witness such beauty.

It's after this song that the album is divided. If we describe the first side as a way to define and culminate, maybe even reinvent rock music, it is time for it to take a dive into the unknown, into the dark and vast ocean of experimental music, an abyss in which artists can barely see beyond their noses. It is time to take a look at the 2nd side of Tago Mago
>>

prose of this caliber is largely unseen around here.... take note, dailybois....

Starting with the same intro of Paperhouse, "Amugn" doesn't abruptly change into a psychedelic riff, but rather shows the true intention of that distortion. What comes after can only be described as darkness. The only possible way to listen to this song is in a dark room. The sounds that come after us barely resemble instruments anymore. A ritual, a demonic possesion, a travesy through a starless gap in space. These are merely some of the few descriptions. Clappings, overdubbed humming and screams, demented circus music and dog barks are just a few of the sounds that we collect here. We have succesfully entered the twilight zone. We are in the depths of a blackhole, or scorching in hell. After wondering in the dark room, Jaki decides to paint some light at the end of the tunnel. Light that looks more like a blaze, as the most hypnotic, powerful and menacing beat starts blaring through the speakers. A beat that shakes one soul and makes us cry for forgiveness. A beat influenced by African drums, which gives us the imagery of a twisted ceremony. And then, an urge, rather a primitive one, surges from our bodies as if a demon was pulling our strings. We are then left in a state of hypnosis, as the drums of the fallen legend shake our very hearts. He is now a soul collector, and he has easily catched our souls, and even Damo starts creaming, as if his soul was also being snatched from his body. Add the ominious synths of Irmin, and the fast increase of the rythmn, our mind vanishes.

And as if they were trying to prove i am right, what is in my opinion the best song on the album starts playing..As a fever induced dream, "Peking O" opens with more esoteric singing from Damo and with some heavy dream inducing synth lines and guitar. We now wake up inside a sanatorium. The crazied, the people who have lost their minds are here, looking at us, laughing at us. Damo is one of them, as he mumbles nonsense and, afterwards laughs maniacally.

Benji in my mind is just a bad album. The instrumentals are very bland and uninteresting and the vocals are also pretty bad.

But the biggest offense would have to be the lyrics. I'm not one to criticize lyrics normally, but there's this certain level of it fake sincerity to the point of just being bad in my mind. Dogs, I Love My Dad and Pray for Newtown in particular are some of the worst offenders.

If you like it, that's fine. But I have a very strong distaste for the album. I like Red House Painters too.

Irmin once again shows just how good he is at making this funny sounding, yet obviously mentally damaged synth, as if to mark the current state of our mind. Not only that, but Jaki and Karoli join him, and they are doing their damn best at keeping up with the mood Irmin creates. As Damo's mumbling goes faster and crazier, the song shifts into a very fast tone, a quite serious one. Jaki demonstrates just how amazing he is by playing at incredibly fast speeds, in a very articulated and futuristic rythmn.

Then an alarm sounds. And utter, complete chaos starts sounding.

Descriptions can't do justice to what is currently happening. Jaki casually invents the burst beat. Damo starts actually mumbling, now not words but just random sounds. Irmin has finally lost it. Words don't make this moment justice. And once we feel it has finally ended, through the sound of an almost sinewave sounding screech, an amugn like journey starts playing. With even more chaos, and even more experimentation, the chaos and madness of the song reach a conclusion, with sounds coming from who knows which instrument, and we lose the ability to discern what is what, while attatching to Damo's voice as the only thing we think is real.

Finally, we are left with a song that in my humble opinion, is the worst in the whole album and what keeps it from being a 5/5. " Bring Me Coffee or Tea" is a sorrowful ballad, of meditation and calmness. I think that if this song had been on any other album, it would definitely be a stand-out. But considering how amazing every single song is, this is quite the dissapointment

AFI - AFI (The Blood Album)

>Pop-punk, Pop-Rock

When I listen to music, I try my best not to look at my phone, read random stuff on Rate Your Music/Wikipedia, etc. But when I listened to AFI (The Blood Album), I took to doing so, and I did it gladly. Because you've heard this album before. I guarantee you, as a consumer, have heard this album before, multiple times. And as a result, and not surprisingly, this album bores me to death.

Imagine the most generic, shitty pop-rock you've heard on the radio. Have it? Hold that thought. Now make it even more generic, even more bland, and even more uninspired. What do you have now? Whatever it is, this album is worse than that.

I give 1s to albums that are just short of pure garbage. 1s have some sort something that gives it some sort of value. Any value. This album has none of those things. Nothing.

And I mean that completely. AFI has nothing. It is nothing.

0.5/5

With all that in mind, i think this review was the best possible thing i could do to show my respect to jaki Liebezeit. It's obvious that this album is an explosive demonstration of creativity that comes from every member, but Jaki's output on it stands tall, and is of course even more powerful with what happens in it. May he, who is known as the best rock drummer in the history of music, rest in peace

Code Orange - Forever

>Metalcore, Post-hardcore

I've never actively listened to metal until today. The closest I've been to actually sitting down and listening to a metal album was Filth by Swans, which isn't really a metal album.

So, in my effort to listen to brand new, recently released music, I've gone and listened to my first metal album. And I liked it. A lot, actually; there's a lot of interesting ideas here, and the music itself is very satisfying. It's heavy, it's dense, and it's a lot like eating a massive steak for dinner when you haven't eaten all day. I particularly like the noisy instrumentals sprinkled in at the beginning/end of a lot of these songs. Keep in mind, however, that this may actually be an incredibly generic album and I just don't know any better.

That being said, there's a couple of tracks here I don't really care for, namely Bleeding In the Blur and dream2.

>3.5/5

Side note: I hope the last track here, dream2, is a reference to the last track on Autechre's LP5, which is called drane2.

WHAT YOU NEED IN ORDER TO CREATE AN AVANT-GARDE:
- a program
- a theory of art
- a teleological understanding of art history
- a clearly defined aesthetic
- social/political/cultural goals
- ideas to solve the problems you've identified in culture and art
- a manifesto
- several people willing to follow you
- an ego the size of jupiter

the only thing you could really object to is calling it "entry-level" because it's pretty much the opposite, it requires an understanding of the full spectrum of black metal, among other things, to actually digest
but i guess pitchfork happened to cover them so ykno

> Domenique Dumont 'Comme ça' (Antinote, 2016)

A short album by a mysterious Latvian artist (even the label claims to know nothing about him/her). This has a tropical lo-fi cassette feel, with hazy steel drums and Casio-esque bossa nova rhythms, like a vague memory of a Balearic summer holiday. The title track reminds me of Antena's 'Camino Del Sol', "La Basse et les Shakers" has the urgent fourth-world rhythms of Eno/Byrne's 'My Life in the Bush of Ghosts', and my one-year-old son especially liked the submerged lullaby feel of "La Bataille de Neige". I thoroughly enjoyed this. 8/10.

The United States of America - The United States of America (1968)
>psychedelic rock, experimental rock, art rock

Some really out-there stuff. Without a doubt one of the most anachronistic albums out there, its usage of electronic and experimental elements is incredibly modern, and not dated at all. The psych that they're layering these elements over might sound dated at times, and some of their sound collage tricks get old pretty quickly, but most of the stuff here really is quite extraordinary. "Where Is Yesterday" is a big standout, the way the choral opening just bursts into a mess of noisy psych is something to behold, and the rest of the tracks don't lag too far behind.

Ken Ishi - Jelly Tones
>Detroit Techno, Ambient Techno

This was a nice blend of mellow little ambient tones and more uplifting techno influence. It’s nice and dancey without being too obnoxious or straight up techno, which I liked. It kind of reminded me of the Jon Hopkins album, it had a very similar style. Not my typical brand of music and it got a little repetitive. Still, an enjoyable listen.

5/10

Mastodon - Leviathan
>Sludge Metal, Progressive Metal

Phew, this is heavy. The whole thing has a very sludgy feel, with really a nice mix of slow, dense riffs and speedy shredding. The drumming is quite similar to hardore punk and the more I hear from this genre, the more I notice punk’s influence. The drumming feels a lot more complicated but still has a slight punk feel. The album’s concept is tight as well. It’s all about hunting down Moby Dick and while it isn’t always incredibly straightforward, it really works. There’s something quite raw about the story that matches the aggression of metal.

This is basically everything I’d love to hear in metal. Great instrumental work, aggressive but not overwhelming vocals and a short album length. I flew threw this two times already with no issues and that’s not something that typically happens with me in metal.

I don’t really know how to write about metal but this was dope overall.

7/10

Ultimate spinach has a really similar songwriting style to USA, even if it's less experimental.

Uh, not typically. This Mastadon album is about as heavy as I usually enjoy. I'll try a song or two from that though and see if it's up my alley.
