i will ask once again here then:

im tired of recording guitar parts when needed out of electric bass
what cheap used guitar for DI recordings do you recommend? ~150$
>>
>>70532505
I still want freedom in the bands songwriting though, as opposed to just filling in the low frequencies. I guess what I'm asking is when i should "embellish", and when i should stay out of the way in a song.
>>
>>70533075
I bought that cheap of a guitar once. It was a mistake. Pay a bit more and buy used. You can get a good $800 guitar used for like $400.

Just listen to some Iron Maiden and tell me that the bassist has no business having a little fun every now and then.
>>
>>70533084
I'm not trying to be an ass here but unless you started the band and you established that you want to be a primary creative force within it, you should not try to impose your own "sound"
unless the band you're playing with is a group of friends you're a part of that is totally okay with you doing that
>>
>>70533084
Just listen to the song as a whole, not only your bassline, and ask yourself whether you're actually improving it.
Guitarists are always massively annoying with their shitty solos and awful distortion that buries everything in a tidal wave of awful overdrive.

I've been with my Squire P-Bass for five or so years now because I got her for $35 used with a stand, and she's been great honestly considering I'm mainly a guitar player and she's more a side thing to add girth to my songs, but I've noticed she is a little fat sounding, which year I know a bass should be, but I'm starting to consider another bass that will allow me the freedom to adjust between fat and large. What are some good basses for someone going between dark funeral/enslaved/peste noire and martha wainwright/jesse sykes/neko case styles? I want to look at something I could find used between $200-$400
>>

does anyone have any experience with them?
mainly bought it because it looks pretty fucking cool
>>
>>70533387
how are you meant to intonate this?
>>
>>70533104
This.
You can't expect to buy $1000, or even $500 dollar tone with $150 dollars, unless you're very lucky. In the world of music, you get what you pay for.
But then again, this isn't saying that you shouldn't keep an eye out for good deals on used instruments. They do pop up occasionally.
So my three tips for you on getting a good guitar are save some money, keep an eye out for nice used pieces, and do your homework on said used pieces to see what they're really worth.

P.S. if you do find a good used guitar for your price range, don't forget to try to negotiate a bit. Haggling doesn't always work, but it's worth a try.

Picked this 8 string beauty up a couple weeks ago for my birthday, and i must say, i've had quite a bit of fun with it. Then again, I'm the type of guy to buy a 6 string bass as well. What can i say, i like versatility.

>inb4 djentard
I see the extra strings as more of an extension of range and scales than "muh detuned palm mutes." Call it djent if you want, but i see what i play as a more progressive metal style.

I'm thinking about putting together a Fender Jazzmaster.
I thought about combining a Jazzmaster Classic Player body with a blacktop neck. Would it be a bad idea to use a blacktop neck instead of the Classic Player neck? Would it feel very different in any way?
>>
Alright so a few threads ago I posted an imgur link visualizing my problem about which pickguard I should put on my MIM Fender P-Bass to look like Jamerson's bass. An anon said I'd need a 3-tone sunburst (mine is 2-tone) and a Spitfire Tort Guard, which he's not wrong but I'm not about to pay USD 200 plus for it. Initially I was going to buy from The Stratosphere because their guards are 10 dollars, but after doing some research, people are saying don't get it. According to some reports, The Strat prints a computer generated vinyl layer and puts it over a stock white guard. I thought that's what all the pickguards do?

Yes, the bridge pickup

It depends a lot on the kind of band though. If you're doing indie rock or something, yeah, you should probably keep it simple and stay out of the way. On the other hand, in a genre such as prog you'd have a lot more freedom to experiment. Personally I'd love to be in a group with a creative, melodic bassist with a Chris Squire/John Entwistle style, as long as they also know how to hold back when needed.

Does anyone else here hate learning songs?

I've been playing for a while and im decent; id say intermediate-ish. I understand chord progressions, scales/modes, have decent rhythm, can play syncopated stuff, etc.

However, i rarely learn songs. When i was a teenager id learn riffs or solos of songs i really liked but almost never a full song. In college i would learn chord progressions and play along to a few songs.

I feel like no learning more songs might be holding me back. IDK if its cus im kinda depress or something but i feel no excitement/patience on learning other peoples songs.

Also curious if theres anyone here who doesnt do covers but does write they're own music?

Pic related. Ive read interviews where john says he spends all of his time learning songs and its something hes always done. I cant seem to get that excited about music anymore like i did when i was a teenager.

I only learn jazz standards to improv over them.
Learning rock songs seems like a waste to be honest, at most I learn a solo that catches my attemption or a riff but that's it.
>>
>>70534833
I've been playing bass for over a decade and probably only learned a handful of full songs. It can be really tedious (and not a good use of practice time) to learn all the little licks and embellishments. But I still think learning parts of songs you like is important, because it helps expand your playing vocabulary
>>
>>70534936
Thats what ive been doing now, learning structures of songs and playing over them.

>>70535000
>It can be really tedious (and not a good use of practice time) to learn all the little licks and embellishments

Good to know im not the only one. I agree, i find all the different little fills/embellishments tedious to learn; especially when you keep in mind the bassist that recorded it just kinda playing loosely over the chord progressions.

I do think it helps make you better. At the same time, i also wonder if its a good use of practice time like you mention. Sometimes i feel like im using it as an excuse not to learn songs and get better. Really, the more songs you learn the easier it should get to learn new ones.
>>
as time goes on, I think companies label guitars "beginner guitars" to increase price on "pro" versions even though the "beginner" versions still perform perfectly fine. except sub $200 new guitars those seem pretty consistently to be made of garbage and sound cheap

one in pic is a yamaha revstar. The biggest difference in each model is the pickups... which have some pretty harsh diminishing returns compared to a nicer amp/head and what pedals it is being run though.

The "Antares" guitars from the 80's 90's were considered beginner guitars... but sound just as good as the more intermediate fender models of the same era imo.

Turned out pretty cool I think, sort of a chill upbeat jazzy feel. Second song I've made and I find that making these little pieces really help me get out of that "lost" state where you have no idea what to do/learn next.

Also, thanks to the anons who gave me advice a few days ago on music production and all that good stuff, It's amazing how much double tracking can do.

How the fuck to I stop fret buzz when doing bar chords? Like, the amount of pressure needed to stop this is ridiculous. Is this what all guitarists need to do?

I hold the bar, and the 6th string is never pressed down far enough. Same with the first. And that's without using my other fingers, which make it worse.

Coming from a piano player, this is the worst part of playing guitar, that small nuances can make you sound like complete ass.Like, my hand is killing me now and I hold my guitar in a death grip and I still get buzzes (Even when just straight strumming over and over).

If its not the action or the neck then legit just practice the bar on the 3rd fret and you might have to slide finger up a little more where your fingertip sticks out a bit more to get it, and just hold it down and strum until your hand cant take it anymore

Do this everyday

What is the most one should pay for a Stratocaster?

I went in to sweetwater a couple weeks ago looking to blow $2-3k on a nice guitar to celebrate finishing med school.

I was thinking for sure I would get a Gibson Thunderbird, ES-339, high end schecter or even a MMJPX.

I've owned several MiM fenders in the past and felt meh about them.
I grabbed pic related on a whim and it was the best guitar I've played.

Now I'm trying to figure out what went wrong with my thinking.

How is it any different than a $300 Schecter with some upgraded pick ups. The schecter comes decked out with FR bridge, locking tuners, etc.

Are these expensive fenders truly worth it? Do they REALLY out play and outsound their mid range price competition?

Squire is trash so don't bring them in to it.
>>
How does this thread like Alan Prsons Project?
>>
>>70543618
what is your endgame? you obviously dont care about music....all you care about is bragging rights for having an expensive piece of shiny wood.

>Squire is trash so don't bring them in to it.

>>
>>70543678
anon dont be rude
>>
>>70543665
Why do you wanna talk about a band that old?
>>
>>70543618
Can't go wrong with a 65 reissue (or that Eric Johnson model) they're a little expensive but they're seriously as good as a strat can get. No need to upgrade anything, everything will be perfect. With cheaper strats there is always some flaw.

I think if you're spoiling yourself for a reward it's worth it.
>>
>>70543678
lel, sassy.

I want a guitar that sounds 10/10 and plays 10/10.

Right now the only other guitar I've played that good was a custom shop ES-335.

And also, I used to make $$ playing in a band. Obviously now I just want to play some music to relax on the weekend.

>>70543730
Yeah the cheap mim fenders usually have some problems that you have to fix, with a file, sauder, truss rod adjustment etc.

These high end fenders don't suffer from the problems? I've not paid too much thought to them in the past.

I didn't even know who EJ was, but his strat is just perfect, or seemed that way in the store.
>>
>>70543781
All the ones I've played have been flawless, but they are a bit of a luxury. You're paying for a perfect strat and it delivers. The next best thing are the MIM 60s classic lacquer series, they're less than half the price and get you 80% of the way there, if you were to upgrade the pickups to something like Jason Lollars you would have something that's pretty close to the high end fenders (might even sound a little better).. Now they even have nitro finishes like the American guitars.
>>
Whats the difference between a Gibson Standard T and a Gibson Traditional SR?
>>
>>70543865
Yeah I was considering grabbing one of the classic series and throwing in a piezo bridge and some of those new EJ pickups or some of the new schecter custom pick ups which would be cost effective.
>>
>>70543730
I played one of those 65 reissue strats when they first came out and it was seriously the best guitar ive ever played. Super resonant, sounded great, played amazing.
>No need to upgrade anything, everything will be perfect. With cheaper strats there is always some flaw.
This is basically the reason for spending $1500 on a guitar. Mexi strats are a lot more consistent now but i'll always wanna upgrade the electronics eventually, sometimes the frets need work, etc.

If you have the money, and you've been playing long enough to know you'll stick with it, save your self the headache and buy a good guitar from the get go. If you buy a lightly used fender or gibson (particularly in the $1000-1500 range) they wont even go down in value. you can always sell for about what you got it, maybe a little less or more
>>
>>70543946
The pickups on the traditional are lower output, for a more "vintage" sound. The rest is marketing bullshit
>>
>>70533084
The rule of thumb is to start with mostly root until you've got a feel, then embellish. Don't be afraid to add a little of yourself to the mix, bass doesn't get enough love.
>>
Is there any way to make tele pickups a little less microphonic? No company makes a set to replace these, so thats out.

I had to look that line up. Most "traditionals" came with 57 classics which are voiced like les pauls from the 50s; the 57 classic pups have been around for a while. I dont know how to explain them but theyre lower output, handle cleans a bit better. I like how they sound distorted too. Id describe them a little microphonic too but not in a bad way.
Best sound i can think of that describes them perfectly is Duane Allman on Eat a peach.

The SR line has "59" pickups, which im guessing sound like jimmy page. basically classic dad rock guitar tone. maybe slightly more output than 57 classics?

the modern 490r & 490T handle distortion a little better; probably best for "hard rock", alternative or "modern" sounds.

It all depends what youre going for; its not that big a deal, its gonna sound like a gibson. I have a LP studio with the 490r & T pickups. Sounds good for jazz, rock, blues, etc. cleans arent bad.
If i was buying an LP id get a used traditional from a few years back, but thats me because i like that mellow vintagey tone

Anyone have any experience with esparto navigators? I want a start and think these are the most aesthetically pleasing I've ever seen.

The one Im looking at has this in the description. "The Sprint Run Les Paul Traditional begins with the specs of the great Les Paul that rocked the world through the '80s and '90s and updates the template with a creative blend of classic and innovative features to produce a guitar that's ready to rock your world today"

I love the way this one looks it's absolutely gorgeous but I'm not so sure about the older style pick-ups. I don't like the way any of the other gibsons look nearly as much this one is stunning.

>>
>>70543464
uh, if its a guitar and you have a hardcase its not too bad, just be polite to gate staff and and ask the on board crew if they can put it in the coat cupboard. if its a smaller craft though that might be a bit riskier and overhead bins are your way to go. in the us instruments count as carry on so you should be golden. just be polite and youll be fine.

The company name is Navigator (same as ESP) Never played that particular model but every navigator I've played has been nice, good MIJ quality. I wouldn't pay more than $500 for one though.

>59 Tribute humbuckers
>Rocked the world through the 80s and 90s
Like i said, marketing bullshit. If you like it, just get it. Pickups are a matter of taste but those arent gonna sound bad desu
Frankly i just read a bit about them and im confused as to what those even sound like. Watch some youtube demos, but like i said, they wont sound bad. Most pickups in expensive guitars sound nice; better electronics are like half the selling point of expensive guitars, they spend time developing those

Just raise the action on the strings you're getting fret buzz on. Its not hard to do, there are plenty of videos on YT that will show you exactly how to do it.

Any advise

Buy CTS pots and a switchcraft switch and start again.

Dimarzio and Seymour Duncan have wiring diagrams for every combination of pickups, pots and switches you can imagine

Are Jet City amps a meme? I am ogling at them because they are cheap, and they sound alright on some youtube demos. Anyone here has had any experience with them?

I'm kinda hoping that because the price of import guitars from asia is getting higher in the UK because of brexit it will encourage people to buy US and UK made guitars. Considering certain korean/indonesian models are over 1k here now it isn't really as affordable as it used to be. The meme of quality import guitars at cheap prices has been dead for a while.

Would it be worth it to install new pickups on this? I knew what I was getting when I bought it since it was so cheap, but the current pickups seem weak and thin to me.

Mexican Standard?
Custom Shop?
American Standard?
????
>>
>>70548713
Mexican standard, cheapest one I could find that had the Fender logo on it basically.
>>
>>70548715
You could get hotter pickups if it sounds too thin. You could also look into single coil sized humbuckers if you really want to thicken it up.
>>
>>70548721
I'm fine with single pickups since all my other guitars have humbuckers. Are those Seymour 3 pickups packs worth it?
