When was the last time we had the legitimate date here?

The point of these threads is to encourage people to look for new and interesting music. We do this by listening to and ideally discussing albums we've never heard before. Many of us already listen to new music daily, these people are in it to venture "out of their comfort zone" by listening to albums they otherwise wouldn't have, or just to have a good time.

30 starts off incredibly with Sweet Mellow D, a great minimalistic track, followed by an unfortunately shorter version of Crispy Bacon, which is one of my favorite tracks of all time. The next tracks are pretty good and would do well with passive listening, but they aren't as impressive as some of his more detailed and rich tracks. The sample of The Hoe is not fun. Theme from Larry's Dub is interesting and something unexpected for Garnier, which got me more excited for the end of this, which has Flashback and 2 more tracks that are at the same level as the middle of the album: good, not great.

I kinda rushed to finish this chart but I didn't have better things to do.
So here are my favorites:

>Lamp • 恋人へ (2004)
4.0
Sweet vocals & smooth twee-pop melodies: as good (and limited) as any essential 1980's City-Pop produced by Hosono (minus the Fusion/funk elements).
https://youtu.be/2UtWLNk7-j8

>V.A. ~ Nippon Girls - Japanese Pop, Beat & Bossa Nova 1966-70 (2010)
5.0
Super groovy, colorful & catchy!! Cute Yéyé-tier singing with furious (freak)beat tracks. What Shibuya-kei has always dreamed of, tried to reach & failed. 70 minutes of intense pop hits without any boring tracks: I have to admit this is a bit exhausting considering the number of highlights, and the over-present bombastic production (the remastering probably made it worse), but it's easily one of the best sixties compilations I have ever heard.
https://youtu.be/fZu34whk-uA

>Shibusashirazu Orchestra • Shiburyu (1999)
4.5
Orgasmic avant-garde brass band; they're mainly an amazing show band but their trance-inducing music still holds well on CD.
https://youtu.be/p3vTu6slrcw

>Susumu Yokota • Symbol (2004)
4.5
Soothing Downtempo/Ambient with samples from classical works. Despite the formulaic idea, Susumu Yokota manages to create different moods (samples varies from 1870's Romanticism to 1970's Minimalism). https://youtu.be/WlFvb7kWAbk

>Kuniyuki Takahashi • All These Things (2007)
4.5
Amazing Broken Beat/NuJazz/Deep House released on Mule Records. A bit lounge-y but not soulless at all! Think about the more relaxed tracks of DJ Sprinkles, and you'll get the idea.

Burzum - Filosofem
Dissection - Storm of the Light's Bane
Immortal - At the Heart of Winter
Gorguts - Obscura
Atheist - Unquestionable Presence
Isis - Panopticon
Mastodon - Leviathan
Cryptopsy - None So Vile
Acid Bath - When the Kite String Pops
>>

>>70510367
yep, 0/5 to 5/5.
add the album from Acid Mother Temple, it's pretty good too, but I think it's quite well-known.

>>70510417
Ken Ishii - Extra the video is a huge classic: https://youtu.be/t6maVVFs0As
Luomo - Vocalcity
Arca - Mutant (watch the videos too to get the full experience)
>>
>>70510417
Jean-Michel Jarre - Oxygen is an incredible album imo.
>>
>>70510471
I dunno man, it just felt so... pretentious? I love the other albums I've heard by Godspeed but it didn't really stick with me at all. I dunno how to describe it. I've tried to re-listen to it a few times but I rarely get more than halfway through the first track. It feels tedious, while most post-rock couldn't be more relaxing.

Everyone loves it but I just feel like I'm missing something, idk.

>>70510500
Been meaning to check Aesthetica out, actually. Especially since I've heard such good things. I'll add Sing to God to my backlog as well.

I notice a trend (not only in your ratings, also in my own and others') to be rather conservative (mostly 6/10 - 8/10) in rating albums in genres the reviewer is not familiar with. I wonder if rating these essentials charts is really worthwhile?
>>
>>70513031
I'm probably most familiar with jazz, and that's the only one that fits that description because I enjoyed the most albums from that essential chart.

Most of the albums in bleep and metal, genres I'm much less familiar with, have much more rare 6s, 7s, and 8s than normal.

La Monte Young - The Well Tuned Piano 81 X 25 6-17-50 - 11-18-59 EM NYC
This album is fucking gorgeous.
It takes about 30 minutes ti really hook you, but once it does oh man does it.
I sat there and did nothing for 5 hours, utterly mesmerised.
It's 5AM now, the sun is rising and there's a pleasant colour on the air.

Purple prose aside.

What attracts me to the music is the dissonances between notes that you get on certain intervals (the Wikipedia page says that the "piece" is built on a "pitch lattice" of perfect 5ths and harmonic 7ths, so we'll go with that, but basically the little wah-wah sound you get when two pitches don't quite match exactly when tuning an instrument). The whole recording is so dense with these dissonances in such pleasant and varied ways, that it was largely improvised is incredibly impressive to me. That it is just a piano producing these vast swathes of sound is also very impressive. It's just a really pleasurable listening experience.
Quite a few moments gave me the ear tickles, especially the parts where Young is going full ham on the keys with arpeggios, which is always a good thing, I always like it when that happens.

flame shield up, prepared to get totally shit on for this crap review

The bley was a little disappointing, kinda felt like the musicians were just jamming and hanging out rather than a focused project. Too conservative to be an avantgarde jazz record (despite the rym tag) and too noodly to function as a chill-out album.
Not bad, but not one I'd really recommend.

Nocturnes are great; trying to burn them in so they're not too distracting to study to.

What can I say, I just love listening to silence

Steve Roden / In Be Tween Noise – The Radio
>ambient, pure aural bliss

Concept is kind of simple: repeated subdued vocal melody with creaking/clanking sounds (think what vinyl crackle would sound like if vinyl was actually wood), then the muffled vocals are replaced by a clear soprano. Never in my life have I heard a piece of music as beautiful as this. It’s only 18 minutes long and is on YouTube, so you have no excuse not to listen to this. Absolutely recommended for everyone who likes music in the slightest.

Steve Roden – Stars of Ice
>ambient, lowercase?

Beautiful though fairly standard ambient album. Heavily muffled with vinyl crackling, which I guess explains why this is seen as lowercase. Lot of repetition of phrases (Chinese singing, guitar, violin, humming) flowing into each other, becoming louder then fading back into the background again. Some gorgeous moments. Sounds a little like the ending of some of the Disintegration Loops, for those who had the patience to listen to the end. Or perhaps a comparison with An Empty Bliss Beyond This World is more fitting, although this is way more repetitive. Trance-inducing at some points.

Too lazy to edit this rn but here's a review.

Death Grips - The Powers That B
>Experimental Hip-Hop, etc

The first half of this is really weird, with this glitch influenced production and a whole lot of little Bjork samples. It sounds like someone distorted this shit on a computer and added a bunch of pounding drum kicks. It’s grating, harsh and at times very obnoxious. That being said, it’s actually one of the more unique things this group has ever done, even if it is super hit or miss. Starts off strong, the first 3-4 tracks are terrific - but it kind of trails off after that. I can actually see this growing on me.

The second half is much different, with noisy, industrial sounding shoegaze guitars making up most of the production. The production isn’t quite as detailed as on side 1, with the weird futuristic production replaced by pounding drums and a wall of sound. Most of it is hype as fuck and is the great combination of punk and hip-hop that I really liked in their other albums. Songs like “On GP and “Beyond Alive” sound almost peaceful for Death Grips but they’re still awesome - I almost like that they’re able to pull off this style. The last 3-4 tracks are really fantastic, it’s surprising that they pull off a shoegaze flair so well. That being said, “Inanimate Sensation” is fucking awful and “Pss Pss” is… ugh. Pretty solid all around otherwise.

3/5 overall; 2.5 for Niggaz on the Moon and a 3.5 for Jenny Death.

>Air - Astronoid
I didn't really like this apart from the first track in which the mix of shoegaze and metal worked pretty well. Thanks for trying Trans but I don't think these metal hybrid genres are for me. 2/5

>青葉市子 [Ichiko Aoba] - マホロボシヤ (Mahoroboshiya)
This was pleasant, her voice is great but with something this simple I can't help but feel I'm missing a lot with not understanding the language. 3/5

>Mount Eerie - Seven New Songs of Mount Eerie EP
I really enjoyed Wooly Mammoth's Abscence but the rest were just alright. 3/5

>Snowing - Fuck Your Emotional Bullshit
The short length probably helped but in contrast to Mount Eerie I like every track here. I just really like this style of emo, I need to listen to more of it. 3.5/5

Ted Taylor - Taylor Made
>Southern Soul, Deep Soul

This guy has a hell of a voice, with his falsetto beaming beautifully through most of the recording. It’s just astounding to hear some of the notes he has on here, I really dig it. The instrumentation is awesome as well, with great motown horns, upbeat guitar riffs and punchy drums serving as a great backing for Taylor. Though Taylor’s voice is the real standout, the band is undeniably funky on here. I say this in every funk/soul review but the chemistry of the band is just beautiful. Maybe it’s just the nature of the music or maybe motown musicians were just all incredible, I’m not sure. But man, nothing really gets me more amped than a funky bassline and these guys really bring it on here.

His voice does get to be a bit much over the course of the album and I’d potentially cut out a few of the slower cuts. Aside from that, it’s a great listen.

3.5/5

On to the other Fahey album later, maybe not until tomorrow though.

Black Swan was an enjoyable film, but I can't get over how incredibly vague the symbolism is. I could appreciate the inner conflict the main character has to go through, but it could have been communicated with a little more nuance than tacky CGI effects and shoe-horned horror elements.

Jazz Mind is an indie album that is suffering an identity crisis. The slower, more singer-songwriter pieces are very forgettable. However, the hardcore, unflinching blasts of screamed punk music are much more effective. It helps that Alan Resnick expertly used the title track to accompany his short "Unedited Footage of a Bear". The frantic and anxious tone of the song matched the main character's deteriorating mental state.

ファイナルソング / 幻想曲 is an obscure single by ゾンビーズ. Thematic Japanese post-punk that is well worth your time.

Money for New Food is another obscure release that's worth your time. I'd recommend the title track to Tuxedomoon fans.

Hey boys, it's been a while. Just dropping in for my biannual visit to daily. Been listening to pic related and Future Days a lot lately, but not much new stuff.
What are some of the best albums you've listened to in the last few months?
Any industrial rock / noise rock / grindcore / general angry shit you'd rec me? (Looking for anything like Big Black, Black Pus, or maybe early Swans)
Any fresh new /daily/ memes I should know about?

Glad to see that y'all are still doing this.

pretend I have the chart

The Mantle was a lot more underwhelming than I expected. I don't like the screams, the clean vocals are laughable, and their basic sound is just kinda corny and unemotional. I like the black metal track and I like the dark folk track, but I don't care for the rest at all.

2.0+

Summer in My Veins has a cool sound, but so little interesting things are done with it that its 20 minute runtime seems excessive. Not a fan.

2.0-

So, originally I suspected I was going to give Eureka a 6/10. Part way through though, a lot of jazzy influences picked up though. There's a mixture of good, okay and decently good tracks for the most part, but in addition there's also the catchy and jazzy "Something Big" which became my favorite song. Some other highlights were "Ghost Ship in a Storm", "Please Patronize Our Sponsors" and "Eureka".

Best album I've heard on the chart during this listen through since I Could Live in Hope.

Metallica - Master of Puppets
>Thrash Metal

Wow, I really dug this. I haven’t necessarily enjoyed much thrash metal that I’ve heard but then again, I don't know much about metal as a whole. The first thing I noticed is that it has a much proggier feel than I was expecting. Lots of quick little riffs over the first half that feel weirdly angular. The title track in particular has a section that made me notice the influence. Idk maybe I’m just overthinking it.

Anyway, this is a terrific blend between the heaviness of most of the sludgy metal I’ve enjoyed and rapid speed. The speed doesn’t feel like overkill though, it’s feels like a nice addition rather than a gimmick. The guitar work is great, with a little Spanish-sounding influence on quite a few solos and your typical metal heaviness during the choruses. It feels all over the place, influence-wise and that’s one of my favorite parts of the album. The drumming is also outstanding, with those really echo-y, pounding patterns/fills all over this. I’m not sure what that’s called but they’re all over “The Thing That Should Not Be” and they’re like my favorite part of the genre. It adds such a nice heaviness to the album and I can’t help but love that. Anyway, this is a great listen. Metal is still slowly but surely growing on me.

Gonna for now stick to going straight down. Part of the big reason I'm not skipping to things I wanna hear is to give me incentive to listen to it all. But I am excited to hear that, I'm a big fan of glitchy ambient / drone / eai. I really liked his album he did with OPN too.

I hate being labeled as a spork just because I enjoy dada

yeah, I'm not sure what was different about it but that one really worked for me, I listened to it again now to think why but I'm not much closer. Maybe it's a bit more shoegazey, and there's less vocals and less of the double bass drumming idk.
