Same reason every other band goes to shit. The magic only lasts 5, 10 years tops. It is extremely rare to find a band that can continue making excellent music past that point.

Rivers just got too self-aware after making Pinkerton. He kept getting more and more self-aware until the White Album, when he became so self-aware that it kind of became funny. Dude could always write a hook, he just lamed it up too much on some of those 2000s albums.
