well, Zappa had a much wider range of talent and understood enough about business to build a very respectable career on many fronts, but there is something to be said for Beefheart's wild child crazyness

You realize that Beefheart was like 6'2" and 300+ lbs while Zappa was a scrawny little fuck, right? Beefheart would flatten him.

As for their music, I find Beefheart to be much, much more fun to listen to. Zappa was a much better "musician", but Beefheart had better ideas and a more unrestrained sound. Zappa worried too much about the theory behind his music which made it sound stilted.
