I totally agree that sound and composition are far and above the most important.

That doesn't mean culture isn't important to understand. We don't live in a bubble. The music didn't come from a void. Nothing is "timeless". In someway culture is reflected in the music and understanding that --->>>in no way impairs your ability to judge it or enjoy it<<<---. It just furthers your understanding.

For example, if we lived in the 50's and a vaporwave record fell into our lap it would of course sound the same but by no means would we be able to understand it in the same way because we have no culturally connection to it.

The only way to add novelty to this is to create a culture around it, to give each album little aesthetic and cultural seasonings to spice it up. Lyrics being an obvious way to do that.
