There's a severe lack of DAW descriptions in the wiki. If you're good with your tool of choice, consider writing a paragraph about it.

Remember to use clyp.it to post your tracks/WIP: posting a clyp.it is just providing sound for a question, posting a Soundcloudlink is making self-advertisement and the thread doesn't need that.

Every time I get a device or plugin I read the manual in extremely close detail. I always find that it doesn't explain everything in depth and it assumes pre-existing knowledge on the user's part in a few areas.

Can anyone recommend me some books that get into every nook and cranny of mixing tools? Ones that teach not just the basic concepts but also explain idiosyncrasies and tricks etc

Humbly requesting anyone who is good with microphones. Not sure if it's apparent in the clyp but I can't figure out volume levels for guitar. Too high gives me horrible innate whitenoise and background static. Just a hair under max gain gives me this volume, still with static. I'm not sure if my equipment or set up is causing it.

i really would like to get the roland 500 modular but ive never used a modular synth and wanted to know what sequencer youd reccomend for it, i figured i might get it and play around with learnibg how to make patches even though it would just be trial and error of connecting the modules
any advice on a good cv sequencer and is it stupid to buy this if ive never made a patch on a modular setup?

>>
>>70474287
What are your levels recording at when you hit the DAW?

If the bulk of the signal (usually the "inner green" part) is hovering around -18dbfs, you should be fine. You should have your microphone input gain set at a point that gives you a signal reading that hovers around -18 on the DAW when you play. If this requires so much input gain that you hear noise, back it off and record the loudest signal you can without noise. You can always make the signal louder with gain plugins, compression, and layering. Just try playing at a volume that gives you a strong -18dbfs signal and you should be fine. There really isn't a benefit to recording hotter than that--you just introduce noise and potential clipping on peaks.

I bought an SM57 yesterday to start recording my guitar amp.

My amp does not have reverb on it, how can I add reverb to the microphone itself? Should I run it into a pedal before it connects to the interface or use DAW reverb? Theres no effects loop on the amp so I'm not going to use a pedal with that.

>>
>>70487263
get AKG K44 Perceptions, they are cheap (30-40 bucks) and amazing.

now as for mixing advice, let's see

This isn't that bad mix-wise, I think that guitar is a bit too stereo (probably the chorus you have on it) and probably has a lot of unneeded low end, guitar doesn't need anything below 100Hz.

That clap is way too bright, if they played that song on the radio with the compression they add the clap would tear the listener's eardrum apart.

the sub isn't quite cutting it. I mean, it's ok but it sounds way too empty without a top layer for your bass and some chords on top of that (you have to do the chords cleverly, not just stack some static saws on it)

"EH" samples a bit too loud

A/B with any Major Lazer song as well, gonna pick a few things up yourself

>>70487297
take the panels off if you can and place both at each end of the piano and make them face the strings, not the hammer directly.
>>
>>70487371

You are talking about the front or bottom panel? I thought the front panel would give a brighter sound, and the lower part of the strings would give a bassier sound?
>>
>>70487263
as the other anon said the out of phase component of the guitars and the chorus sample is brutal and really annoying
make sure to take a look at a goniometer every now and then and double check your mixes in mono (both the guitar and the sample almost completely disappear in mono sum which is a good indicator for it being too out of phase)
>>
>>70486939
Just get royalty free samples. Don't use pilfered samples and you don't have to worry about it.
>>
>>70487422
get the external body components removed and no, it doesn't matter what part of the string you're recording, a string vibrates the same exact way, the lower/higher has only to do with the thickness of the string aka the keys.

Stumbled onto this recently - apparently the FL Studio playlist is going to get built-in audio warping, with warp markers--like ableton--is coming to the FL studio playlist according to this post.

http://forum.image-line.com/viewtopic.php?f=100&t=151564&start=150#p1129355

I can't fucking wait. They've already got the engine work done, since FL studio got real time audio stretching late last year. I know you can warp samples effectively by "making unique", holding shift+left click, and adjusting pitch by going to the individual sampler channels for each slice, but having it like ableton with markers you can visually adjust on the waveform will be so much more convenient so I'm really looking forward to this.

Actually agree with the first anon. Being able to work on automation in the Piano roll's "Velocity" area is a lot easier than working in tracks where you have to zoom in on the part you want to create an automation for. Also, it's really confusing that you have separate automations in the piano roll too by clicking the little E button thingy.

This is one of the main reasons why I'm keeping an eye out for Bitwig as my Ableton replacer.

what does this even mean? Serum is versatile and it's why most producers use it. Larger sample size of producers, more outliers at the top "known for their sound design". alot of it has to do with experience.

i got a korg trition studio for christmas when i was 14. No joke, the manual was brief as fuck, didnt explain shit or how to record and i didnt do shit with it until when in was 18. It took a few years to figure shit out but i was also in school throughout the day and didnt have as much time as i did now to break in new products.
I learned the GUI, a few tricks and shortcuts, and applied that to other DAWs,

The best things you learn are trick on doing things with limitation like how to do certain tricks like creating a crescendo by recording the volume automation moving up quick during a segment in your music, or looping samples short to create aphex twin like glitch sounds, or smoothing out samples of a bass line or singling out drum breaks to create presets.

Now days, kids can just download pirated shit that does everything for you with a click of the button, but back in 2002 you had to do everything manually or pay for quality samples.

sometimes i wish i just stuck with using the computer and figuring out things like renoise since VSTS were just starting out when i was 14 instead of begging my parents to blow 4000 on a DAW keyboard with monitors.
but the experience of using hardware helped out alot and youll spend more time figuring out your setup than actually jamming.

HI GUYS,

I'm going to be streaming breakcore production in ableton Live on Twitch. I'm RenoiseJungleBreakcoreguy, I posted lots of breakcore/jungle WIPs outta Renoise. Feel free to tune in!

I'm using Tremor for drums, followed by bouncing and significant choppagem, and Serum for most (all??) synths. FabFilter plugins including godly Pro-R and others like Trash2 make appearances.

Go to Twitch and search Kimryd, I can't post the link because "the system this it's spam", the link is also in the IRC channel, and discord.

yeah sure that sounds doable, like just googling genres, picking one with random, setting BPM somewhere around 90-115, getting 500MB new samples for the beat etc.

usually i just do one 8-16 second clip that has all the elements, then cut the volume out of most of that shit and add them to the track as time goes by to get there some sorta progression

still i feel like you gotta have vocals for any shit to be commercial, or it has to be really fucking good

Hey, producer with barely 7 months of experience here.
As an student and freelance worker I have to put all the time I can to good use with music production. What I'm trying to do now is learn a little further from the basics, which I believe I'm handling well, but I need to get the most out of the few hours a week I get for this. My question is: Should I spent my time working on songs and learn by trial and error while watching tutorials and reading manuals or have any of you found a more effective way? American “hot rod” mentality applied to a boutique, high-end stereo interface. Hand crafted in Seattle, WA utilizing the finest silicon components money can buy for ultimate transparency. There is also a selectable tube-powered overdrive circuit designed by Michael Soldano (of guitar amp fame) to add as much character as you like to any sound.

Is this the penultimate interface of are generation?

it all boils down to better sound design and better sample selection (i.e. that kick), also there's no sub, vocals are mixed way too loud compared to the rest of the channels.

remove the jingle bells or get a new sample, they don't have enough sustain/sound off

I fell asleep before the other one got down uploading. I'll post the link in then next thread since this one's about to die.

In the meantime, here's a shitload of vintage drum kit samples.

Honestly we should do this. I have like almost a TB of samples I'd be willing to share.

Anyway, here's the other pack.

Can anyone enlighten me to wtf is going on?

I have a drum machine and a synthesizer which I'm using for arpeggios. Both have tempos set to exactly 100. I start both at the same exact time and after a few loops, they start to desync and deviate from each other.

Anyone know what the problem could be/how to fix it?

Maybe one of them has a faulty clock? Did you try to connect them over MIDI or something?
