I'm listening to upcoming /blindfold/ material.
Let's have a /blindfold/ tomorrow - I can host it if blindfoldguy doesn't.
I hope this isn't too much of a shameless plug but I could really need guidance on how to improve my shitty playing, here's Stella By Starlight.
https://clyp.it/iw5q0fdu
>>70461582
Stella is my all time favorite standard.
Your version is very good. Lots of nice Bill Evansy voice leading stuff. Maybe a little bit "busy" overall for my tastes... the only thing I'd really say is to not do so much sudden dynamic shift, the dynamic range is good, but make it more gradual and more meaningful when you want to play something loud. And maybe change up the voicing of the Em7b5 sometimes. Seems like you keep coming back to that same voicing
>>70462281
Do you find the rubato to be a bit too strong? Personally I made it a point to stab myself if I'm going to rubato like Chopin. Many years of playing romantic pieces forms bad habit.
When you mention Bill Evans voicing, are there any particular specific parts whereby you can hear the influence? Because I listen to a shit lot of Evans and I wonder if I'm sort of influenced by him.
>>70462354
Yeah, kind of like the dynamics I think it jumps too much between fast and slow. Have some fast/busy runs in there but work up to them and make them stand out.
Whenever you do those moving left hand lines at the same time as you're doing stuff in the right hand it sounds very Bill Evansy.
>>70462504
Hmm I will keep that in mind anon. Thanks for the tip. Gonna work on my voicings more too.
>>70462627
If you don't already, listen to some Fred Hersch. Anybody who likes Bill Evans should enjoy Hersch's playing and he's an absolute master at solo piano.
>>70462687
Yeah I already do listen to him. I like Alan Broadbent as well, and Barry Harris is kind of like a bebop version of Bill Evans.
Afternoon /jazz/.
What's everyone got lined-up for this evening? I'm planning on sitting down with some Blue Note records I've skipped from their Vinyl Reissue Series.
>>70461360
Got a tracklist?
>>70462901
Have you ever heard Hank Jones's solo piano record? I know he's got at least one that's really good and a pretty different approach than someone like Evans or Hersch.
>>70462966
Nice man, im gonna check out the arron parks tapes with thomas morgan on bass tonight. Should be good!
>>70462966
Cape Verdean, Street of Dreams, Black Fire, Go, and Capuchin Swing are all great.
>>70463045
I'm listening to one now, he seems to swing way more than Evans, but I'm only like one song in.
>>70463041
I just emailed blindfoldguy if he has any plans, but here's one I'll host tomorrow if there's nothing else, so feel free to get it now for any early listening:

Theme is "Numbers" - look for the /blindfold/ thread tomorrow at latest 24 hours from this post

Hey this seems incredibly interesting, I'm down to give this a go. I think there's zero chances of me guessing a soloists, but I'll try my best to contribute some opinions.
>>70463404
that would be completely fine - always interesting to hear what people think
see you tomorrow!
bumping with groovy upcoming release

Is Onkyo considered Jazz?
I'm not very sure what else it would be.
Recently found this nice live recording of 70s Johnny Griffin. Griffin and Art Taylor sound great, and I was pleasantly surprised by the pianist.
>>70464952
It has more ties with Free improv and EAI.
>>70465989
I always thought of Free Improvisation and EAI as Jazz forms.
The same way more radical forms of Modern Classical are considered Classical.
But then again, I may be wrong.
>>70466054
>I always thought of Free Improvisation and EAI as Jazz forms.
I agree. But, Onkyo for me isn't really a jazz form. It places much more emphasis on sound texture than on musical structure.
Looking for more light hearted vocal jazz like blossom dearie.

Julie London?

Already love her

This is great thanks!

I'm pretty new to you to Jazz, can somebody recommend me some dark, melancholic, slow and spaced out jazz albums?
I found a few songs that fit this description but hardly any full albums.
Here are some examples of what I mean:
Chet Baker - Almost Blue
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z4PKzz81m5c
Miles Davis - Blue in Green
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PoPL7BExSQU
McCoy Tyner Trio - When Sunny Gets Blue
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7toKjKtbeeI
Dinah Washington - Cry Me A River (Kind of)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dsalvDqZcFM
Guys I'm desperate for hip good big band music. NOT duke ellington old school blues shit, I need some innovative fire.
Reposting my small Bluenote chart for anyone interested.
>>70470318
I don't know much off the top of my head that fits your description, but one that does is Miles Davis' score for film "Ascenseur pour l'échafaud"
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wc4tT-55ZzI
Other than that, alot of Film Noir soundtracks have very dark, melancholic Jazz soundstracks or scores. Try this playlist out: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL7kJS6C5aPQCGcYixTLW67m8DyKNmqA05
It may have some of what you are looking for, sorry I can't be much of a help.
>>70470497
Fire! is definetely where you want to be looking for experimental Big Band music.
Maria Schneider Orchestra was one I remember hearing good things about. Angles 9 also pretty good - not a personal favourite. But still good.

>>70470554
Ah I've actually heard part of that soundtrack before but forgot the name of it, thanks.
>>70470554
I love that picture of Alfred Lion rubbing on Hank Mobley
>>70470720
Lol already all over this, one of my favorite albums of all time. Actually found it on /mu/ like 5 years ago but Chris Potter has always gotten my dick hard
>>70470632
I've listened to some Maria Schneider, pretty good, I'll check the other two though
What other collective improvisations should I check out other than Colemans Free Jazz?
>>70472290
Sun Ra- Disco 3000 and Sleeping Beauty
>>70472290
Coltrane's Ascension, Sam River's Crystals
>>70470497
Don Ellis and Stan Kenton had great progressive big bands. Live at Monterrey, Electric Bath, City of Glass, plus a lot more are all great
Rollins>Criss>Clark>Stitt>Fortune>Red
