/bleep/ here, can someone explain to me why rock music has so many different obscure sub genres? What is the difference between dreampop and shoegaze or art rock and post punk, garage rock/hard rock etc.? And that's not even going into metal. Wouldn't it just be easier to call it all something like Guitar Driven Music (or GDM) so all the obscure genre splitting doesn't confuse people new to the style of music? We could even have a /gdm/ general to stop all the different guitar ones cluttering up the board. What do you think?

stuff like shoegaze has so little to do with rock anymore, basically the only thing keeping it together is the "guitar - bass - drums - vocals" setup, which isn't even exclusive to rock
so yeah its basically meaningless

fuck off you faggot all edm sounds the same

> hahahahaha those rockists are so autistic with all their needlessly intricate subgenres
> not like me! Never mind I get buttflustered when someone labels my Deep Progressive Jungle Housestep as Progressive Deep Jungle Dubhouse

That's not the point and you know it. The point is it's dumb to say x is allowed to have lots of subgenres and then turn around and relegate y to like 2 catchall terms.
We only need a few threads on /mu/, I agree.

Would clean up the board a lot.
Just like electronic music, over the years people have new ideas and genres crossover. For example Breakcore came from Breakbeat and Hardcore which both span off from House somewhere down the line, despite these genres not sounding much like House. The only reason why there are so many genres of music in both in Rock and Electronic music is because people thought the newer sound deserved a new name.

what about jazz?

jazz is black classical
Art rock is usually just a way to describe inventive, creative styles. Like talk, talk, Bowie. Please correct me if I'm wrong, that's just my impression.
