Thanks for the feedback. I'll go with the second choice then.
Do you think I should go for a more enthusiastic delivery vocal wise? I feel like if I add much more to it (whether production- or vocalwise), it'll drown out the melody of the distorted keys, which I want to be the mainpoint of the chorus.

https://clyp.it/cm2czdeh
Here's the leadup to the song so you can hear what it sounds like before the chorus. Imagine rap vocals from the beginning to the chorus.

------
I'm loving the screams, trap chants the dog barks. You use samples well.
The song starts a little rough though, try easing into it. I'm not too big on the lead synth either. It has too much high end, so you might wanna try filtering it more or removing some distortion. Change out the snare too. It sounds a little too stock, ya know?
>>
>>70436223
Yeah, I'm def working on tweaking the synth sounds and the snares. The snares were more placeholder than anything. It also might be bc of the chants layered on top of them. Going to try to use some nice tape saturated drums I have

With that buildup the chorus is great. And keep the vocals like they are.
>>
I have a question for you guys:

List different production parts and what percentage of your time goes to every one of them for one song. E.g.

>sound design - 10%
>composition - 40%
>mixing - 20%
...

You can do it in hours instead of % too. I'm really interested on which part you spend most of your time.

You don't need to slap an EQ or compressor on every channel or drench your mix in reverb to not clip your faders.

Just gain stage your tracks and it will sound ten times better. Digital clipping is awful sounding.
>>
>>70438100
the snare/clap thing sounds out of place
to mono reverby so it's way behind all the other stuff and rhytmically it's too off for my taste - almost every hit is early, not only by a slight 'non-mechanic' margin but so that it really destroys the groove
the rest of the mix sounds pretty balanced, though. I like it

>>70438226

How do you get good at hearing compression?

How do you become familiar how different types of compressor affect the sound?

Whenever I read about compressors I always hear stuff like 'It distorts the sound in a pleasing way" and I don't hear this distortion - they weren't talking about hardware either.
>>
>>70438293
I think it's too much, especially because it's early
laid-back stuff isn't as noticeable most of the times, but a backbeat that pulls forward all the time is kind of annoying
I'd tone it down a tad

of course there's extra distortion in a lot of plugins that simulate their analog ancestors' characteristics, but even the cleanest of digital compressors eventually distorts because of the nature of compressors itself: if your attack and release time is close to the time your affected wavelenght's cycle then you're 'shaping' and therefore distorting each cycle and so creating overtones - this happens a lot with bass instruments' fundamental regions and can totally be a desired effect
the compressor's characteristic knee curve and attack/release characteristics obviously play a huge role in how these kind of distortion sounds

to the rest of the question:
read about the fundamental differences of the old but gold compressor types (such as vca, opto, vari-mu, ...) and try to find plugin examples you can experiment with so you get hands on experience why each is useful for what kind of tasks and suck for some others

The instrumental is alright. You're an okay producer, assuming you made the instrumental. I would turn down the drums especially the hi hats and turn up the synths and piano and add some more changeups.

>>70438474

>>
>>70438623

>>
Sup /prod/,

what is a good general purpose microphone for recording (mostly vocals)? I have a few synths/keyboards and a nice drum machine, but what I feel like I need to start recording is the microphone and interface.

Any recommendations? Should I just look on craigslist to find something in my budget, which is ~$200??
>>
>>70438749
totally depends on your signal and the slope of the attack and release if the results are pleasing and most importantly beneficial for your mix
a variable curve on the attack like on the el arousor makes this really easy, though. that compressor can (just like the 'real' el8x) do crazy short attack times without sounding like ass

>Thanks about the advice, it's weird though, since none of my faders is actually clipping, I'm just over compressing everything.
Check your plugins. Gain staging is a bit different than just checking the track fader. You might be clipping your plugins.

Basically, you want your signal to hit your plugins around -18dbfs, which is equivalent to 0dbvu. See in pic related how it says -18 under "cal"? That means this volume meter is calibrated for 0dbvu to be equivalent to -18dbfs, which is the standard. 0dbvu (-18dbfs) is nominal signal level.

Basically, your digital meter in your daw always shows you dbfs. Pic related is a great plugin that's only ten bucks and shows dbvu, but you can download something like FreeG for free and insert it as the first plugin in the chain to check your levels. You'd want the main signal before all plugins to hover around -18dbfs, because most plugins are modeled on analogue algorithms which are designed to handle signals optimally around -18dbfs.

The thing that tricks people is that let's say you have the gain at the beginning of your track around -3dbfs (way too hot), and then it goes through compression, eq, saturation...etc, and you might see "oh I'm clipping the track fader", and so you turn it down. Let's say you turn it down to a nice level, around -18dbfs. But the thing is, while your track is now "not clipping" overall, your plugins are still clipping internally, adding noise and distortion that adds up over many tracks.

I would insert a trim plugin (freeG is a good one) at the beginning of your tracks and see where your meters are hitting.
>>
>>70438732
It's the same kick actually, do you think there are pahsing issues? I'll try some eq.

>>70438927
I like the drum break, but it completely overshadows everything else in the song for the first two minutes. I feel like I'm listening to a drum sample with some white noise and can barely focus on anything else. I think you cut off all the high end for the synths and piano sample so all the high end I'm hearing is from the hi hats in the break. I was waiting for you to change the EQ and let the instruments come through at some point so that it wasn't so flat.

I started to really love it near the end when you introduced more sounds, but it takes so long to get to that point I almost stopped listening. Overall pretty good but just make sure there's more things happening than just the drums at the beginning.

Quick question:

I'm recording on live 9 through an old MOTU traveler. Recording works fine, but when I go back to listen to what I recorded, I will get a high pitched squeal that interrupts the playback for a minute or so. This makes recording over multiple tracks almost impossible. After some reading, it sounds like this is a common issue with MOTUs

Do you know any way to make live 9 input through the MOTU but output to the PC's headphone out? That way I don't have to deal with the MOTU's shitty headphone output.

Sorry for potentially ruining someone's day, but I have to share this comment from one YT video:

I moved to Hollywood from the Midwest in the mid-80s, and got a rather harsh lesson that I'd like to share with you and your viewers.

I'm a drummer, well-rounded musician, and songwriter. I'm one of those guys who went to college for it. One of my many approaches was to be a songwriter for someone who has charisma and an actual chance at being a star. I met a woman who seemed to have what it takes, and she said that I should meet her producer, because she would love to work with me.

We drive to this guy's mansion in the Hollywood hills. It's a huge place. His servant answered the door and brought us in to his quarters. She introduced me, and there was something odd about him. He started off by welcoming me there, and was showing me a Prospectus he had for her album. Each sheet detailed a song, which "cost" anywhere from $90,000 to $120,000 to produce.

He then decided to give me a tour of his mansion. At that point, I felt that maybe I was wrong about him.

We are walking along this catwalk, and down below us is a room with sunken wood floors. There is a huge mixing board. On the left is a young kid hunched over a drum machine, and on the right is a kid working on a keyboard.

>to be continued
>>
>>70443032
>continued

"You see that guy on the left? He makes catchy drum beats for me all day long. I pay him $9 per hour and he does this for 8 hours per day. And that guy on the right? He makes bass lines, loops, melodies, and whatever else I want, for $9 per hour."

Then he suddenly turned my direction and stared at me with great contempt. His voice changed.

"I DON'T CARE IF YOUR NAME IS LUDWIG VON FUCKING BEETHOVEN! HOLLYWOOD DOES NOT NEED YOU! NOW GET THE FUCK OUT OF MY MANSION!!"

He grabs the singer by the arm, pulls her into this room, and slams the door. It took me 10 minutes to find my way out, and then I had to walk out of the Hollywood hills [no sidewalks and windy roads] for almost two miles before I could find a bus stop.

I kept on, playing in bands as a guitarist, bassist, keyboardist, and drummer. It has always been about fun and creativity ever since that day. I've been working with a band called Noodle Muffin for the past 14 years, and wouldn't have it any other way.
>>
>>70442884
I'm positive they won't, since it doesn't sound like a software problem if the inputs are fine and so it's most likely just a single pair of faulty D/A in that output channel or even the headphone amp itself
>>
>>70443092
well, if i run my phones through either of the main the line outs, i still get the same problem. don't have anything to try s/pdif or ADAT, so i guess i'll try and work something out.

It's also only $60 (with an unlimited free trial if you don't want to pay) and can run 32 or 64 bit plugs natively with built in bridging. It's infinitely customizable and allows you to create macro actions where you can string commands together and do many things with one customizable keystroke or mouseclick. Even the context sensitive menus are editable and you can literally make your workflow light speed.

Also, far and away the most CPU efficient DAW. Way, way more efficient with plugins than Ableton. Way better mixer, way better recording system (takes rule), and good timestretching algorithm (Ableton's is slightly better but reaper's no slouch). Ableton is better with midi but not by much.

The only thing about Reaper (imo) is that the mouse behavior is retarded on default with the scroll wheel zooming in the arrangement view but you can customize it and change all the mouse behavior so it literally fits itself to your preferences.

I use Ableton for some midi stuff and Reaper for everything else. If I had to scrap Ableton I wouldn't miss it.

>>
>>70447099
for mixing, general rule of thumb is to try and stay under -6dB before the master.

you should go with what sounds good to you, and you almost never want to mix things solo, hearing how sounds work in a full mix is much, much more important.

for mastering i use ozone 7, learnt how to use it from some random ozone 5 tutorial.

hey man, idk if you're still around, but i appreciate the feedback.
i understand what you're saying, but unfortunately it's a sample that i've pitched down over a full octave. i have it processed to the point where i feel the noise provides a nice atmosphere and the piano is still audible. it's sort of a similar idea to the of production on a multitude of popular rap songs where there is only brightness coming from the drums and vocals, but i tried to do like an ambient thing with a bright atmosphere idk

the drums were definitely too loud though i'm mixing them further

btw what were you listening on?
>>
>>70446967
hey thanks!
i use ableton although you really can do this type of thing in any daw. i'm aware of a number of the popular chill-hop nujabes type soundcloud poducers who use fruity loops, so it really doesn't matter. in my opinion the daw should just be whatever you're most comfortable with. making this kind of music is about proper sampling and processing and that can be achieved with pretty much any daw and a few vsts.

I'm on a pirated Ableton 9.6.1. For some reason I can't play in midi anymore from my controller in sync. Everytime I use the count-in metronom it records a few miliseconds too late, meaning it always cuts off at the first beat of the metronom. this is frustrating since I always have to push the midi to 1.1.1
>>
>>70452670
>How important would a quality power amp be for my sound quality?
hardly at all
I wouldn't recommend a power amp, but a small receiver
it will give you a separate volume control and a headphone amp as well and with the multiple inputs and in a lot of models even hdmi audio it's much more useful for normal multimedia applications as well
just make sure it's not really underpowered, as some entry models are, but a lot of very nice stuff from denon, yamaha, onkyo, nad, ... can be had for fairly cheap, especially if you look for some a little older models

>>
>>70464977
that has nothing to do with mastering
the most important thing is to get your workflow sorted into something like that:
>lay out your song with fresh ideas or ideas you pull from the drawer and combine elements
>arrange that into a structure
>shape/replace/create sounds, create transitions
>stop skipping back and forth between these steps
>bounce that shit to audio and start mixing it so you finally stop fiddling with the composition
>export the mixdown and master it to a final stereo file

it takes a lot of time and patience and a lot of the feeling that you're forcing you to do certain things so you can go to the next step but you're not totally satisfied yet
that's totally fine though and that's where working destructively as in bouncing to audio before mixing (maybe even earlier on some elements) really helps you getting progress because you can't go back
going through all this a couple of times and looking back and comparing your results afterwards helps A LOT more with getting better than just not getting anything done at all

>melody
Melodies are mostly you having to get inspired, start by listening to tons of music and stepping outside of your comfort zone, start using your inner ear, humming random melodies, and remember to ALWAYS write your ideas down no matter where you are or what you do.

>chorus
same as before

>bass, drums
if you have the melody and you can hear the overall thing in your head bass and drums are easy to add to that, but maybe you can start from the bottom, start with a drum groove, then bass and try to work something on top of that

you can also try emulating and recreating all your favorite songs, that'll give you ideas and get you familiarized with the whole songwriting process

>>70461898
you have a long road ahead of you, try to recreate your favorite songs for starters and spend some time familiarizing yourself with harmony and music theory at least a bit, helps with generating ideas

>>70461985
learn how to produce music in general, after that you can make whatever you want

>>70463013
it's very quiet for starters, you can bring the volume up, piano seems to not have a lot of direction, the groove on the drums and the sloppiness is exactly what's needed but maybe you can find some better samples or make these ones more prevalent in the mix and snappier. it's pretty good overall but you need to beef it up, it sounds pretty flat and quiet.

>>70463692
spend some time familiarizing yourself with non-metal guitar music, if it's music it has to come within you, learn what scales and phrases are used in the music you're interested in making.

>>70464561
are you looking for feedback or just memeing?
>>
>>70464882
these are extremely broad topics that you mostly have to experiment to figure out.
try experimenting with EQ's and the Ozone Mastering Suite as much as you can and go through the manuals and try to understand EVERYTHING that's said on there.

the most important thing to note is that it's going to take a while for you to get familiar with those and you have to use your ears!

hey guys, been working on a home master of this song i've made, i've posted this before but if anyone has any opinions on the overall mix and if everything is gelling just right it would be great to hear from you! be as critical as you want with the production
>>
>>70461345
This is good, but I wouldn't listen to a whole song like this. You should treat it as a song section and add different parts.
>>
>>70465141
Track templates are dope. You can set up your tracks anyway you want (routing/pre-loaded effects/labels/colors etc) and save the template and insert it right there. Pic related. It's different from a project template (which Reaper also has) in that I can use whatever track template I want inside any project. So I can have Superior drummer set up (with all routings/labels/colors/effects), or Ezdrummer, or Maschine, or the sampler that comes with Reaper, or whatever.

You can save effects chains, so that when you add effects, you could add say a cut eq, compressor, boost eq, and saturator, all with one mouse click (or keyboard shortcut), and they'll all be labeled and in a neutral setting ready for you to start using.

Another cool thing is this feature called "use as media source for selected items", where say, I could take a kick stem, and use Dynamic Split to chop it up into individual items, select them all, and use the media browser to swap different kicks into my already written part. Or I could do the same thing but on a second, duplicate track, and swap out the duplicate kick with another to add kick layers into my already written part.

The best thing, is that you can take all those steps, and make a macro (which is very, very easy and intuitive to do), so that I could literally Dynamic Split, Select, Open media browser just by pressing say, Ctrl+D, or whatever I want. It's called "custom actions", where you can string multiple actions together and control them all with one keystroke or menu command.

And Reaper is by far, by far the most efficient with managing CPU and plugins. I can run so many plugins in reaper, where in Ableton I wouldn't be able to run half as many without getting clicks and pops. One last thing, Reaper is really easy to handle routing since there is only one type of track. Any track can have midi, audio, mono, stereo, receives, sends, whatever. Every track can do anything.

I'm one of the anons who said a couple of things about this like a week ago or so and I think the progress is great
the overall balance is pretty good now, just a couple of minor details:
in the beginning there's a couple of handling noises in the left guitar's pauses, I'd edit them out carefully
the drums, especially the snare sounds like there's some compression working really hard - the overall punch is not bad but I'd tone it down a tad so it doesn't sound as smashed because it's pulling up a lot of room tone on the snare which won't really fit the otherwise really clean mix

good job, m8. didn't you say you were adding some vocals, though?

hey i appreciate the feedback

so the piano is basically this sample: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H2FNolvbuYs (00:23-00:30) pitched down 13 steps with a bunch of processing and grain delay. i thought it sounds sort of weightless and eerily hollow, but it could just sound flat and bad idk
