The humor in TMBG serves to compliment the dismal hopelessness and misery.

you have to have some damn good artistic chops and musicianship to make it work. otherwise the lyrics just sound ridiculous.

Disagree. You see use of irony or straight up humour in music all the time, particularly in hip hop and folk. And there are a shit load of comedic musicians.
