Discuss the authentic artist that continued the tradition of art pop legends such as Kate Bush, Bjork and Fever Ray: Claire Elise Boucher aka Grimes.

David Byrne:
>I started collecting pictures of Grimes, Madonna, Kate Bush, Sinèad O’Connor, on and on—popular musicians are obsessed with her. This trend inspired the premise for the show: a pop star decides to give in to the Joan obsession and tell her epic story in concert.
http://www.brooklynvegan.com/david-byrne-details-his-upcoming-joan-of-arc-musical-tickets-on-sale/

Grimes about her next album:
>As she closes the door on this album, Boucher has a calmer project in mind for the next: “I’m really vibing on making something really slow and gorgeous that just breathes, and has room to breathe. I feel like my work has always been fast paced, kinetic, and almost just manic and I feel like for me the hardest thing I can do is make something that’s slow and heavy. I’m so ADD in my work; I really want to push myself into something that would be slower and more reflective.”

I used to love Claire but if I saw her today I'd honestly try to kill her just to put her out of his misery. She's like an old sick dog that you can't stand to see hurt any longer. I'd just tell her I'm sorry and put a bullet in the back of her head.

I don't really even post on /mu/. I only come here when I discover something 'new', for some reason I only heard of Grimes a couple weeks back.

it's a coherent or an orthodox song, or whatever, also the lyrics actually have a theme and aren't just scrambled to serve the beat

it also has a good video instead of the usual "let's mix random aesthetics" approach

Realiti is slightly catchier.

This. Most people first heard about her through her poppiest songs. They liked them so what's the problem if her whole albums are catchy too? Maybe they're afraid to admit liking pop songs.

>Boucher says she usually draws during movie marathons, and that the Visions cover image was hatched with India ink, watercolour paper and “Ghost in the Shell II night, so I was thinking a lot about death and shit,” she says. “I do visual art in the same manner as music in that it’s intensive, but it’s not private at all. The album cover image took about 16 hours, I did it over two days. But it’s weird because I was sitting in my friend’s living room the whole time, so it was a much more social experience and there was a lot of feedback from my friends, and it was a bit different in that regard. At this point there is way less pressure for me to make visual art, so I only really do it out of love, whereas music has deadlines and pressures and stuff, so it’s not as free anymore. It used to be the opposite.”

>This is probably why the prevailing influence on the Visions pieces is very personal — “my symbols,” Boucher calls them: the penetrating eyes (or lack thereof), the writhing textures, a weeping alien, the slanted hearts, flush roses and cushy bows, which apparently she’s been drawing since high school. “The eyeball was my first symbol and I use it in lots of ways all the time, but I also really like faces without eyes — which is why I’m attracted to skulls a lot. The alien head is my newest symbol. I have a tattoo of it now on my hand. It’s crying cuz, I dunno, I was sad at the time.”

>Whatever mindset sparked the details, Boucher’s visuals are spiked with the same playful streak as her songwriting. The horizontal line of script atop Grimes on the cover says “I love” in Russian, and the two vertical lines are written in a conjured foreign tongue. “I’ve always been into fake writing on my art, particularly things that look kind of Japanese, because I love manga and anime poster art a lot,” she says.

>And the drawing she made for the cover definitely mines one of her main creative veins: an affinity for Mesoamerican style. “When I went to Mexico, I was actually really inspired by a lot of Aztec art. I went to the museum of anthropology and Teotihuacan. It was all so horrifying and elaborate. More similar to my own art than a lot of stuff I’ve seen, even just structurally, because they use lots of little images of screaming faces and strange patterns to make big elaborate pieces.”
>Grimes: ‘I want to remake cult sci-fi movie ‘Dune”

>The electro-pop artist, who has referenced Frank Herbert’s 1965 sci-fi novel in her songs, claims it would be her “dream” to make a new film version. David Lynch previously brought the book to the big screen in 1984. Grimes told Bust magazine: “I want to direct a full-length film of Dune. I liked the David Lynch version, but everyone knows that he didn’t really care about it. I just feel there isn’t really a great Dune movie in the same way that there’s a Lord Of The Rings movie. I think by the time I’m 50, it’ll be time for another Dune movie, and I’d love to make it. That’s the dream of my life.”

>"Caladan", the first track, refers to a fictional planet of the same name. The next, "Sardaukar Levenbrech", refers to the military rank of Levenbrech—roughly in between a sergeant and a lieutenant—in the fictional army of the Sardaukar. A Face Dancer, as used in track three's title "Zoal, Face Dancer", is a type of human in the series who can shapeshift.

>Track six, "Feyd Rautha Dark Heart", refers to the primary antagonist of the first novel in the Dune series, named Feyd-Rautha. "Shadout Mapes", the 10th track, refers to a minor character of the same name. Track 11, "Beast Infection", refers to the "Beast" nickname of the character Rabban.

>That unconventional allure is something that Boucher welcomes: “I don’t want to make blatantly sexy records,” she insists. “I mean, I feel prettiest when I’m wearing a trench coat or whatever, because I think it’s all about confidence and intention. For instance, Britney Spears is not attractive, because of the desperation in her life. I find aggression sexy. I think power is sexy. Like, Leeloo in The Fifth Element [Milla Jovovich’s character] is the hottest girl in all of Hollywood, because she’s got power. And what’s the coolest shit that’s happening right now? It’s people making video games, or hackers – the coolest, most attractive people are geeks.”

>So is Boucher a geek? Despite plenty of supporting evidence – the Fifth Element fixation, the naming of her first album, ‘Geidi Primes’, after a planet from the fantasy book Dune, the nights spent hunched over a laptop denying her bodily functions – she denies it when I ask directly. Nonetheless, she acknowledges being in possession of a curious sex appeal, and is circumspect but pragmatic about its use.

>“My femininity is in no way the basis of what I am doing, but I know sex sells, for sure,” she says. “And I definitely have played that card. Sometimes, you’ve got to look in front of you and recognise that there is a way to make things slightly easier, which will lead to a lot faster success.

>“And that doesn’t mean being like, ‘oh, my tits are out’, but it does mean that if someone says do a fashion shoot, you do it, why not? I recognise that that’s not the purest way to look at it, but I just think I am really good, and I want power, and that’s a faster way up the ladder.”

>Semiotics are really important. Visuals are really important. Instagram is so much more effective. Words can be taken out of context, but a picture is a picture. Think about a lot of the great leaders– or not necessarily great, but powerful. They always had really extreme aesthetics. Genghis Khan. Mussolini. I’m not pro-fascist, but people really respond to aesthetics. I’ve done these sociological tests where I try different hair colours. Blue and purple hair gets the most likes on Instagram. It’s almost double the likes that it is for blonde, brown or pink. I find it very interesting that you can directly measure what kind of visuals people respond to.
>A: I wonder what that means. Is it that people just like blue hair better?
>G: I’ve noticed that people often gravitate toward things that are less flattering. Candid pictures often get more likes than if I did a photo shoot in a magazine. That’s not always the case, but often less sexy, less pretty things do better. I think people respond better to things that walk that middle ground. Every time I dress like a guy or anything androgynous, people love that. I don’t know, the bro-ier I present myself, the better the response.

Central heterochromia iridium - ie. the centers of the irises are a distinctly different color from the outer edges (the person's true eye color.) It's not an INCREDIBLY rare thing (I've got one person with it in my immedaite family.) But cases as noticeable as hers don't come along that often - at least not among famous people. In her case, she has gray eyes (her technical true eye color) that switch to orange/gold at their centers.

They're gray. They just tend to look slightly tinted towards one color or another in different photos because of the lighting. Gray eyes are the closest thing to a color-neutral eye color. Therefore, much like a white/gray wall, whatever color of light gets shined on it gets reflected back.

Makes your heart melt, doesn't she?
>>
I love the fact that she constantly seems to have to draw everything in & keep putting it down somehow, that the inspiration is so intense to her that she constantly feels the urge to commodify.
I love the fact that she seems so interested in everything, that anything has some perculiar side to it.
I love the fact that she doesn't give a fuck, that she doesn't let other peoples opinions get in the way of her personal preferences, that she stays true to herself no matter what to such an extent that she puts everybody else to shame with her lack of guilty pleasures.
I love the fact that she is often "boyish" in her interests, that she loves games, fighting sports, that she loves taking the piss.
I love the fact that she can't sit still, that she always has to keep moving somehow - i'm calm, so movement gives me comfort.
I love the fact that she seems obsessed with death and a sort of underworld art. I love the fact that she's fascinated by old cultures just as much as i am, that she keeps on delving into history and symbolism to find some truth. That she loves sci-fi, comics & fantasy.
I love her for telling me that embarrasment is good, how she seems to have unlocked so many mysteries that it just makes me want to listen to her talk everyday day about everything and anything, to hear her opinion all the time...
I even love the fact that she is so smart and strong in her opinions that it makes her stubborn to a point where she thinks she has the right to judge everyone with impunity.

You know after some time it gets a little tiring always being the one giving. My memory is perculiar and reading the same articles over and over. The moment should have become something tangible, something present. I "read" her and i fell in love and retained the emotion which is easier for me, used it as a string to hold on to and remember. The thought of purpose helped but i loved her to such an extent that the mere memory made me overlook the malice.

The question "How many angels can dance on the head of a pin?" has been used many times as a dismissal of medieval angelology in particular, and of scholasticism in general. The phrase has been used also to criticize figures such as Duns Scotus and Thomas Aquinas, who explored the intersection between the philosophical aspects of space and the qualities attributed to angels.[1][2] Another variety of the question is: "How many angels can stand on the point of a pin?"[3]

Scholasticism used these kind of questions in dialectical reasoning to extend knowledge by inference, and to resolve contradictions. The need for rationality as complementary to faith was raised as an important point for Catholic theology at the Council of Trent.[4] The question has also been linked to the fall of Constantinople, with the imagery of scholars debating about minutiae while the Turkish besieged the city.[5][6] In modern usage, it therefore has been used as a metaphor for wasting time debating topics of no practical value, or questions whose answers hold no intellectual consequence, while more urgent concerns pile up.[3][5]

"Grimes", or Claire is simply a vessel for the pure gift of love and music that she carries in herself.

If French is the language of Love undisputed, then Grimes is living and undiscovered French royalty, her lineage traced back to French Dukes and Duchesses who perfected the art of courtship and romance in the highest arena before the King and Queen. Grimes is perhaps a direct and secret heir of French Queens and Antonio Vivaldi, such is her gift of music and the love expressed in her compositions.

To be in the direct presence of Grimes is to be uplifted and to know real joy. Her friends know this truth deep in their hearts, and they follow her footsteps in rhythm to the beating of their hearts.

Watch out world, Grimes is out to amaze us all. If you have ears then you can experience the exquisite joy that is her latest masterpiece, Art Angels, available now in Google Play and Itunes!

"I had always wanted to make music," she says to me from a cell phone in the back of a moving vehicle in California, on a tour that will bring her to a sold-out show at Great Scott on Monday night, "and one day I just decided that I was actually going to do it instead of not doing it." Of course, what Boucher is explaining is about more than just making the music — it's committing to a lifestyle where making music is the sole focus of one's being.

"I kept working on my music until around March of last year, at which point I was selling enough tapes to — well, my rent was only $200 a month, and I literally didn't spend any money on anything. And I was done with school, so I didn't have any school fees and was only spending around $300 a month total, so I decided to just quit my job and totally focus on Grimes." Her focus paid off, for both the artist and her audience, first in the dividend of last year's excellent Geidi Primes and Halfaxa albums, and then in this year's breakthrough, Visions (4AD). Filled with skittering beats, soaring vocals, and yearning choruses, Visions is the sound of a unique artist finding her voice in a way that is both personally satisfying and universally hummable.

>A party girl raised in a “really strict” Vancouver household, Boucher says she “spent a lot of years being a really shitty fucked-up drug addict.” Her parents pulled her out of high school and sent her to boot camp in British Columbia. “It worked,” she recalls. She attended McGill University and attempted a double major in psychology and philosophy, with minors in Russian and electro-acoustics, before the allure of Montreal’s art scene proved too much and she dropped out to form Grimes in 2009. Still, Boucher brought with her a scientist’s unsentimental eye for what works and what doesn’t. “Montreal is a lot of art-school art,” she says. “It’s not that those people aren’t talented, but I’m into technical Renaissance painting. I’m into creating something that’s straight-up gorgeous. Cubism is just not the same.”

>The album isn't easily categorised, which is exactly what Boucher wanted. "It is definitely an album that you could listen to alone when you're going to bed, but it is also an album that can be played at a party," she says. "It depends on what you want out of it, but that was kind of the goal: to make something that could go both ways. I think everything comes down to confidence. Anything delivered with confidence can be good. There is nothing that is bad. There is no genre of music that is inherently shitty. You can make something good if you approach it with enough gusto, and what I'm trying to do is combine the aesthetics of manufactured pop music, which obviously appeal to people super strongly — myself included — and make it more meaningful and more experimental."

WTF, are you deaf?? That performance is astonishing! I'm assuming that was just a shitty trolling.
>>
>>70424548
Saw her live on the Acid Reign tour last summer - she was fucking awesome. Can't speak to what she was like before then.
>>
>>70424766
Your standards are pretty low then.

You should go to more shows.

Curious what word you would use for a performance that actually is astonishing.

Please don't kill Claire.

Be nice to Claire.

We should all be nice to each other and love each other.

Be nice to Claire.

I've seen plenty of shows, from Massive Attack and Kraftwerk to Bjork and Radiohead. I know what I'm talking about. If you truly believe that was a bad performance, you're an idiot. Period.

I dunno dude, I discovered her when Visions was released and I still prefer Halfaxa to Art Angels. She just kind of lost this mystique and oppressiveness her music used to have to this sharper, more refined pop vibe that's cool af but doesn't really represent what drew me into her music in the first place.
>>
>>70387223
That's a pretty harsh critique, bro

halfaxa > winter
visions > spring
art angels > summer

does it mean we'll have an autumn album next?

Hopefully. Between Visions (2012) and Art Angels (2015) she did another album, but she scrapped it. She worked around one year on Art Angels, so her next album could be delivered this year assuming she started working on it in 2016. She's not lazy like most of us and she's working hard to make great art.

Collab with the weeknd
>>
>>70433197
She's making electropop, not R&B. Why that collab?
>>
>>70433269

I like Starboy by The Weeknd, they aren't that different.
>>
>>70433283
I know only a couple of The Weeknd songs desu
>>
>>70433689

Same. Starboy isn't RnB he collab'd with Daft Punk for it.
>>
The Weeknd is a big mainstream musician. In theory, Grimes and The Weeknd make a great song, make a great MV with both of them starring.

And they both get more fame. I'm not sure if they can mesh into a good song because that depends on artist chemistry, and I'm not sure what their collab would sound like if they did.

And I'm not sure who would take the "spotlight", in Starboy I only see The Weeknd and not Daft Punk.

The Weeknd probably thinks he's too good to work with our Grimey. He hangs out with Drake and they seem like the types to bully Grimes.
>>
>>70434279
Grimes should collaborate with talented musicians such as St. Vincent.

The Weeknd is Canadian, so is Drake. My friend just told me, Canadians are taking over.

I'm going to put on St. Vincent for the first time.

Don't hate The Weeknd because he's a guy.
>>

Try Actor first. Or the self titled album if you're a pop fan.
