This is a thread for bluegrass, old-time, appalachian folk music, jug band, traditional country, hymns, traditional gospel, acoustic blues and any genres belonging to the wider American folk tradition.
Who are you listening to? What's your favourite standard? Any albums you can recommend? What's the haps, homies?

I already made a thread about it but I might as well post here since you might know. Who are some artists similar to Washington Philips? particularly in terms of vocal style. Thanks :)

I'm afraid I haven't listened to him, yet. But I really really should. Where do you suggest I start?

He only ever recorded 14 songs (in 1928 I think), so there's only one album of his music. My favourite by him is this

which is a cover of an otherwise pretty classic American hymn

Thank you, kindly. My gospel doesn't go back nearly far enough. I'm more into the blues affected gospel, myself. Everything else I know from the Goodbye Babylon comp.

What could you recommend instead? I don't really mind honestly. I love this sort of music but I haven't listened to much.
P.S. you're much more polite than most people on this site, never change man :)

For my money, the absolute peak of gospel music is The Abyssinian Baptist Gospel Choir - Shakin' the Rafters. It's much much later than Washington Phillips but it's something fucking else, man.
I figured this would be a long shot on /mu/. You guys will find any way to avoid talking about music, won't you?

It was a valiant attempt

I dunno. I guess people can like what they like, I suppose. But I can't help feeling a little disappointed.
