What are some other bands like Dream Theater, Meshuggah, etc. that are really technical but objectively boring and awful?

Necrophagist
Obscura

Brain Drill was the first that came to mind.

and I'd rather get punched in the stomach than listen to Animals as Leaders or any of that nonsense.
>>
Rings of Saturn
>>
Steven Wilson, but not really because of his actual songwriting. He's just kind of tasteless, like his musuc sounds like it came out 40 years ago. He just doesn't try to push any boundaries with the genre.
>>

At least Rings of Saturn is unique, even if their music sounds like vomit.

Are you stupid? Steven Wilson is one of the least technical modern prog artists even though he had Guthrie Govan, Marco Minnemann and Gavin Harrison play for him

>He's just kind of tasteless, like his musuc sounds like it came out 40 years ago. He just doesn't try to push any boundaries with the genre.
Oh so you're just parroting Fantano's reviews ok.

Here I thought I was gonna come across people that know jack shit about music.

Yeah guys, Sound of Muzak, Fear of a Blank Planet and 4 Chords that Made a Million are super technical songs.
>>
>>70363930
The first half of the Astonishing was good and then the second half nose dives into complete boring mush with some cheesey lyrics added in.

I liked what they were trying to do but they clearly just rushed the whole second half because the label wanted the record now.

They should have just Metroplis part 1 and ended it at A New Beginning.

I basically can't listen to any metal these days but Megadeth, its all just grating and same-y to me.

>>70364349
Hand Cannot Erase is pretty modern, with a lot of electronici and pop elements. I think yeah his other solo albums are him emulating 70s prog music, which is what he seems to be obsessed with so whatever.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tE9RMXds-Cg

Also, I would call PT the least technical band in progressive rock. Any amateur could play most of the songs.

>>
>>70364824
to be fair to him, those were only two albums and he didn't build a career on doing glorified yes covers like roine stolt. insurgentes is still one of the most unique prog albums I've heard, and grace for drowning is good jazz fusion

however wilson was definitely a bit of a cunt, and way too far up his own ass at one point. he's mellowed out now and even contributed vocals to dream theater (another band he called out) as an apology

>>70366128
the mars volta are great. tool and radiohead, along with nine inch nails are probably the biggest modern influences on porcupine tree. if he should be called out for recycling anyone's sound, it's theirs. seriously, you can hear a huge shift in his production sound at the turn of the century, likely when he first heard trent reznor

the guy's basically built an empire. he owns the modern prog scene, so I don't think he really cares about being mainstream. his recent albums have charted very well anyway

neal morse seems like a really nice and genuine guy for sure. sola scriptura is a great album, too. but generally speaking his sound is very much 70s prog revival, and although sw isn't exactly an original artist, I appreciate the wider variety of influences (not just the modern bands I mentioned, but shoegaze, post-punk and krautrock as well)

king crimson. I mean that 80s lineup, you could make the case that fripp, bruford and levin were each the best in their craft, at least as far as rock music is concerned. and adrian belew just for generating guitar tones is unmatched

even their current touring lineup is just ridiculous in terms of pure technical ability, and it's kinda incredible that they actually sound like a real band and not just a collection of musicians. same with swans, actually
>>
>>70366921
I don't care about any of the above artists you listed but Steven Wilson does not produce anything close to interesting music. His whole career consists of him trying to poorly emulate elements of King Crimson, Gentle Giant and various other respect prog artists.

I understand that you have a natural desire to defend your tastes/interests but one day you'll grow out of his mediocre music and realize you spent time defending crap music.

Can you sound any more condescending?

You clearly didn't listen to more than 4 of his albums
He is a very diverse artist
>>
>>70367019
Not progressive rock, apparently. It's unfortunate but the genre has pretty much entirely stagnated due to the copious amount of artists who are content to simply dip into nostalgia pertaining to 70's prog.
>>
>>70366858
The Mothers Of Invention, U.K., Captain Beefheart & The Magic Band, Genesis, Soft Machine.
>>
>>70366995
Oh it's another faggot parroting Fantano, nice
>>
>>70367037
I have listened to several of his albums and you wouldn't feel they were diverse if you'd listened to most of the revered prog artists that existed in the 70's -- seriously, his schtick is quite literally to imitate those sorts of albums with a pretentious pseudo-intellectual veneer for good measure.
>>
>>70366804
DESU, I never got in to anything from the 70s prog scene so I can't assess Neal or even Steven from that perspective.

I got in to Steven because I like the Cure and he is like 1/4 a clone of the cure. Or was anyway. Neal I stumbled on through Flying Colors the pop/rock band.

DT I started listening to after they toured with Megadeth.

I didn't realize progressive music was even a thing that existed while I was listening to these bands.

I would have just called all of them good pop music, or in DTs case good metal.
>>
>>70364670
Disc 2 confirmed for war

So consequently you're lying?
>>
>>70367047
Yeah totally
>>
>>70367080
What a lame way of ignoring legitimate criticism - trust me, these opinions were homegrown... if they happen to align with that of Fantano that's probably because it's an obvious conclusion to reach when listening to his music.
>>
>>70367107
Moment of betrayal and the swordfight are the only things on the second half that are 'war'.

The other songs are sad or radio rock.
>>
>>70366995
>>70367092
Is there a band/musician that's pushing the boundaries of their respected genre? And it's not the first time that this question has been asked. It was conveniently ignored.
>>70365865
>>
>>70367131
Doesn't this list sort of prove my point? The amount of worthwhile prog is so sparse that you've had to dip into different genres to make the list seem more substantial (Math Rock/Post-Rock/Post-Metal).
>>
>>70365854
but this is totally wrong and doesn't even refute what he said, you're just getting hung up on the term like every other idiot
any genre starts out as loose and innovative but establishes conventions later on, prog too, it's just a damn name. you could argue it relates to songs progressing rather than just repeating the same melody or beat for all its duration and it would apply to a lot of modern, conventional artists too

>>70366995
>i'm not capable of discussing this, i'll just wait a few years until you eventually agree with me

>>70367170
If the only response you can muster up is that Steven Wilson is terrible and you hate him because it's popular to do so, don't even bother replying.
>>
>>70367186

When another Pitchfork hyped band rips off the Beatles or Joy Division it's fine but prog musicians are not allowed to have any inspiration

>The swordfight
The path that divides just so everyone's clear
>>
>>70367188

I've listened to more than you might imagine as I have a friend who is heavily into prog and constantly recommends stuff such as this to me. I don't think prog is a very interesting or appealing genre in its current state and Steven Wilson is probably the worst way of trying to persuade me that prog hasn't gone completely limp.
>>
This is seriously one of the most ignorant and poorly made reviews I have ever seen

The Walking Shadows is tritones out the ass

and I've mixed sleeping pills and booze so please don't change song titles on me.
>>
It's funny how Steven Wilson is still one of the most polarizing artists on /mu/
>>

>>70367177
I've only listened to the album with headphones so I never see the song titles. DESU I don't even know where one song ends and another begins.

I know the album very well though, listened to it alot until recently.

Not to mention this one.

He simply couldn't fathom the concept of poly-rhythms. That's interesting coming from a bass player.

I have to question how people are so adamant about defending someone who wrote these lyrics:

"Xbox is a god to me,
A finger on the switch,
My mother is a bitch.
My father gave up ever trying to talk to me"

It's near impossible to convince somebody that thinks those are acceptable lyrics that they have shit taste.
>>
>>70367385
So where are you getting this information that they were "rushed by the label"?
>>
>>70367407
Lmao it's always the lines from FOABP that anti Wilson fags use as argument

First you clearly don't understand the theme and narrative of the album and second his other albums have better but not great lyrics

And since when do lyrics matter so much in prog? Go listen to Bob Dylan
>>
>>70365230
I'm talking about the album btw
>>
>>70367131
Even though it's a long one, the proportion of albums that I actually like is the highest I've seen in in one of these compilations. Helped me understand my taste a bit better; cheers brah, guess I'll give some of the others a go then

As for >>70363930 - even though I enjoy The Madness of Many I can't get into any of AAL's older stuff. Seen them live & even though Tosin's impressive to watch the sound doesn't do anything for me. Same goes for Messugah

>>70364886
fuck this guy though
>>
>>70367363
It's also funny how not a single person bashing Steven Wilson responded to:
>>70367170
>>70367190
>>70365865
>>
>>70367505
Are you really arguing that I didn't understand the thematic implications of the album... really? There is literally not subtlety to what he is trying to achieve and even in context it's totally embarrassing.

I guess you are correct about prog lyrics mainly being pretty mediocre so I guess he's a better imitator than I give him credit for but you'd think he'd use his platform to improve upon the weaker areas of prog.

Also, why is Bob Dylan being used as a derogatory term? He's certainly a stronger artists than Steven Wilson and this is coming from someone who is far more familiar with SW's output.
>>
>>70367583
Yes, the album's concept is fairly simple but it still goes over some people's heads that Wilson is talking from Childs perspective

His lyrics on albums like Stupid Dream are way better

Prog has always been about instruments first and lyrics and vocals second

Also I never said I dislike Bob Dylan, just that you should listen to singer songwriter music if you want really good lyrics

>this is a nearly 50 year old man
>>
>>70367935
I find it difficult to believe that the concept would go over anybodies head considering the complete lack of subtlety. Also, even when you take that into consideration the lyrics still read as a middle-aged man trying to mimic what he thinks a 15 year old boy might sound like... it's fucking embarrassing to listen to.
>>
>>70368014
That pics pretty old i think
>>
>>70367407
I don't mind those lyrics in the context of the album but the next album has some real cringeworthy lyrics:

"I'm tired of Facebook
Tired of my failing health
I'm tired of everyone
And that includes myself"
>>
>>70368052
I think it was taken last year or late 2015, that's when Transience came out
>>
>>70368052
Here's a pic of him from last month
>>
>>70368014
How the hell does he look better in his 40s than in his 20s

It's like he stopped aging
>>
>>70365067
There are people that love it though. They're pioneers.
>>
>>70368139
Yikes, that's quite bad: how can he think that's acceptable?

Each to their own, I'm happy to read that you can derive enjoyment (even if I don't connect with it).

Good taste anon.

I'm impressed no one mentioned Dragon Force. Technical with an incredible bad taste is Aesthetics

Dream theater is on a 2 year release contractually with Roadrunner but astonishing came out 3 years after DT2013.

Which the album has an orchestra and choir and all that to go out and record so its not surprising it was delayed into 2016. They had to write the score and choir parts on top of finish the album itself. Thats why I think the last half was rushed. The first half has noticably more depth up until moment of betrayal when after the songs start to have less distinctive moments.

It isn't. It's essentially a pop album.

the born of mediocre dissoshit, blending nu metal riffs with pseudo-experimentation
overrated garbage, i used to like it when i was 13 along with Limp Bizkit and Slipknot

Not in a hard to play on guitar way its not compared to other stuf they have done.

It is extremely complex with all the instruments and parts on the record though.
