noob with only very basic knowledge of theory/synthesis wants to get a synth
minilogue vs ms-20 mini?
sorry if this is the wrong thread for this
>>
>>70337430
Well the Minilogue is 4 voice polyphonic so you can play four notes at once. MS20 is monophonic so you can only play one note at a time and is more suited to lead lines and basslines. The MS20 is a recreation of a synth from the late 70s and has a more vintage sound. It's pretty dirty sounding and noisy but that's part of it's charm, listen to 'Metal Fingers in My Body' by Add N to (X) for a good example of how dirty the MS20 can sound if you really push it. Overall though, for a first synth though I'd go for the Minilogue.

minilogue just cause its more user friendly... i would mess with Reaktor or any other modular synth plugin for a while before getting a real semi modular.
>>
So am I doing this reverb send right? Read about it in the last thread.

I have a lead routed both to master and reverb, in reverb I set wet signal to 100% (don't know on what level to set dry), and I control the input of a dry signal with the knob at the bottom.

Is this the right way to do it or? And I just route all my tracks I want reverb on to that send opposed to adding it directly to each track?

No. If you're doing a reverb send, there shouldn't be any dry signal. Just wet. Otherwise you'll be getting two dry signals. Does that make sense?
>>
>>70337750
Yeah, realized that a minute ago. Is it enough to put a dry slider to 0, then? Or did I fuck up the routing? Should I just send the track to reverb and then reverb to master, or send the track both to reverb and master?

Sorry, I didn't read your whole post before responding. Basically, on your reverb send, put the wet at 100% and the dry at 0%. Then, for example, if you want your snare's wetness to be 25%, just turn the send knob from your snare track to your reverb send up to 25%. The send know basically becomes your wet knob. This saves a lot of CPU because you'll just have 1 reverb instead of like 20 for each mixer track.

Anyway, started a remix and there's a key change in it (this is the second half of the song, didn't think you guys would want to hear the whole thing). I can't tell if it sounds weird or not.

What's the fastest way to improve my /prod/ skills? Recreating shit? Do some specific challenges for practice?

I don't think just doing stuff is helping me, since I need to have something to compare my work with.

Even if my work sounds similar to a track I'm recreating, I know I am still clueless about certain things and don't know what I'm doing. It's always the same process. EQ, put some compression, slap some more random effects if needed, then add a limiter and a bit of soundgoodizer to master because I don't know how to master properly nor use maximus.
>>
>>70337368
I would make this picture my phone wallpaper if it was slightly less weird. Saved anyways, thanks.
>>
>>70337898
Thanks. But just one more thing - so, is it okay if I send my track both to send AND master (like I did in the pic)? The only difference is that I can't get just a wet signal this way, e.g. if I want only that echo. So idk if I should just route it to reverb then.
>>
>>70337927
set the send to pre fader and turn the channel fader down if you want it all wet
>>
>>70337906
>soundgoodizer
First of all, that's where you're fucking up. Don't use that. Ever. Second, you might just straight up need better samples. (I can provide you with some if you want). If a sample doesn't sound good to begin with, then it's (probably) never gonna sound good. And don't expect to git gud over night. I've been doing this shit for like 7 years and I just recently feel like I got decent. Just make shit. Doesn't matter if it's good or bad. Practice.

>>70337927
Well, yeah, if you JUST want the wet signal from a track, then don't route it to the master.

Does bad samples really exist? I noticed a lot of these kinds of drums lately, muddy, low-fi, noisy...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lg35jIwoWcQ

Tutorials made me think my drums should always sound crisp and clear, but I started thinking that everything can work.

I don't know, I have a feeling I am overthinking a lot. I'm not sure if I'm just on a wrong side of dunning-kruger spectrum, though.

But I noticed that when I check out some FLPs of songs that I think sound great, I often don't find much shit going on in the mix. A few times my tracks were PACKED with effects and it sounded like trash - I was actually just making it worse the more I was working on it.
>>
>>70338031
it was a really polished song and i liked the vocals a lot straight out of new retro waves channel.

this one is my incomplete thing.
>>70337648
>>
>>70338031
>>https://clyp.it/sa5gsra1

Imo the fine tuning LFO on the lead in the intro needs to be a little more subtle.
>>
>>70338012
Nah. The design is clearer and a lot more modern (it can look childlish to some people, I personally enjoy it, but can agree on that - it's just a trend, though).

The managing of its windows sucks hard though. Why can't I just make it fixed like in ableton? That's probably the thing that pisses me off the most. That and chaotic arrangement view. Other than that, it's a great DAW and it just keeps getting better.
>>
>>70338055
Do* bad samples exist.
>>
>>70338055
You can always make a good sample sound shitty (if that's what you're going for) but you can't make a shitty sample sound good. And less is more. A lot people think you need to compress and EQ everything. If something already sounds good by itself, leave it alone.

>>70338057
Thanks, man. I've been on a synthwave kick recently. Used to make trap, oddly enough. I'll check your shit out after I post this comment!

>>70338078
The LFO on the pitch? Yeah, I was trying to make it sound like an old vintage synth. You know, the ones that can't hold a steady note. Guess I overdid it. I'll turn it down.
>>
>>70337419
>https://clyp.it/4crv0wsa
Turn down the water sample a little, let it last longer, into the start of your synths. Also fade it out slower, and add a little reverb. That way people have something to focus on other than the sudden lack of sound, and the transition flows better.

I would also try and find boomier kick.

Not a bad start!

>>

>>70338719
One of the most basic rules of mixing is to mix quiet. Basically, your premaster shouldn't exceed like -6db. What I usually do when I mix a song is turn all the volume sliders on my mixer to 0%. Then I'll pick one (usually it's the kick since most of the time it's the loudest thing in the mix) and bring it up to about -8db. Then I'll go down the line and bring each track up to an appropriate level using the kick as a reference. A lot of people make the mistake of trying to mix with everything at 0db. You should always have a couple of db's of headroom. You can make it loud when you master.
>>

Is this fun to listen to?

I asked in the Last thread but i went to sleep and now that thread is gone

I just installed cubase 9 on a New laptop, i didn't install asio4all before. I installed a couple of synths but when i play there is no sound coming out of my laptop speakers.
Should i reinstall? or should i just buy an interface? i wanted to go to a music Shop and buy one for my guitar
>>
I'm starting to lose my direction. It always happens at this point when I have moderate amount of sounds and composition finished. It's too much going on for me and I can barely control it.

https://clyp.it/4jnkxo35

Should I finish arrangement first before I go into mixing? Now I'm just throwing different parts in to see what will sound best.
>>
Are there any good youtube channels or something where you can just watch people make beats from the ground up? I think I'd benefit from seeing the workflow of people who are actually competent.
>>
>>70340034
Sure, I like the transition at 1:07. Not a fan of the drums though, they sound thin to me
>>
>>70340594
What kind of beat? Because most of the time people who make those kinds of videos just make trap beats.
>>
>>70340594
Also interested. Btw, I bet I would make a larger progress in a month with a mentor than in the past 2 years alone.
>>
>>70340648
Honestly I'm not a huge trap fan but the style doesn't really matter to me so much as the thought process that goes into it. I feel like I'm throwing shit at the wall and seeing what sticks, so I really just want to have a better understanding of what's going on inside the head of someone who can make a beat (or any kind of track really) with more forethought

Sounds better than anything I'm making man dw about it. My biggest gripe with it is I find that little melody that starts at 0:38 and ends at 0:58 a bit cheesy
>>
>>70337648

Damn, I love that song - and a great choice for a jacking house remix.

My thoughts:
1. The vocal stabs in the intro sound unpolished, like the edges could be rounded off a bit. Or did you do that on purpose to sound like those early Trax records/Dance mania tracks?
2. That bassline is so silky, I love it. What did you use to make it?
3. It's just my opinion, maybe you disagree - but I think the original vocals (not pitched down) would work better in this. If you want to keep that dark/eerie vibe, you could just layer the pitched down vocals under it to give it a sort of demonic tone. Just an idea
4. I would have the vocals sitting lower in the mix and make the kick much more prominent.

>>70340563
I've always found it helpful to just leave it alone for a while. I finish a lot of stuff months after I've started something and put it down, then come back to it and ideas come to me much more easily. Alternatively, try making slight variations on the patterns you already have; sometimes you can accidentally make something that sounds great and start a snowball effect of inspiration.

I posted this in the last thread but I didn't get much feedback - what do you guys think?

Minilogue is a lot of fun and you can make great sounds quickly. I have a lot of digital synths (serum, harmor, fm8), but they're just not as fun because you have to spend time menu diving/setting up your encoders to control the knobs, which feels more like an extra decision making process instead of fun noodling. With the minilogue I can tweak for five minutes and find something I like.

I also recommend it because polyphony is incredibly useful. I'd honestly rather be able to play chords/intervals in favor of the slightly fatter/warmer bottom end that mono synths tend to have.

You sound like you're not making things that make you happy.

Stop trying to achieve "artistic merit" and try to make something that honestly delights you, no matter how goofy or stupid. If you're having fun, it will come across in every note, timbre, and decision. If you're trying to make "art", you're using the wrong part of your brain. Forget the editor and favor the child.

repro-1 is really good, it's a recreation of the sequential circuits pro-one using circuit emulation technology

installed the drivers, connected the interface, turned on the interface, its in direct monitoring when i plugged in my guitar the interface recognized it but there was no sound coming out of my PC speakers.

connected the headphone jack to my bedroom amp and there is sound coming out of it but not from my guitar just a random song that i put on cubase to experiment but the interface recognizes my guitar
followed the instructions from cuibases website and still no sound and apparently fucking nobody had the same problem as me because i cant find shit on google

Should I worry about my songs being repetitive?

I always think my songs aren't dynamic enough, so I use an idea for about 15-20 seconds at a time before it becomes annoying in my mind, and I try to come up with something else to switch to. Eventually I run out of ideas to switch to and I never finish it.

Should I be worried about this sort of thing, or should I let it slide so I can finish stuff?

guitar rig doesnt work if i play the guitar, it only works with my synth vsts, and it records the guitar clean but in a minuscule volume lvl that you can only hear it if you pay attention and turn the amp to 10. If the guitar rig didnt work at all i would reinstall it but it works so i dont know what to do.
The guitar makes a sound if i play it clean but it records at an unacceptable low lvl without turning the guitar rig on. Is it because im using my amp as a speaker and also as an amp?

I think it's better to improve the song than discard it for a new idea. Some ideas are unsalvagable, but if you're constantly waiting for "the perfect idea", you will never finish anything.

If your idea starts annoying you, think of it from an engineering/problem solving perspective. How can you fix what's bothering you? Is it the instrumentation? Dynamics? Do you need another part to keep interest piqued?

Basically what I'm saying is, if your solution is always "throw it out", you're not only shortchanging yourself from finding possible solutions, but at the end of the day you're left with a whole lotta nothin. Except self-doubt and anxiety, of course.

thank you... that is the most feedback ive ever gotten for a song.
>1. The vocal stabs in the intro sound unpolished, like the edges could be rounded off a bit. Or did you do that on purpose to sound like those early Trax records/Dance mania tracks?
they were clipped from an acapella of a song (will link in below)
>2. That bassline is so silky, I love it. What did you use to make it?
the bass at the intro and outro was Serum with Turnado
the main bass was actually a sample from a Niche Audio pack but i ran it through some reverb and filters.
>3. It's just my opinion, maybe you disagree - but I think the original vocals (not pitched down) would work better in this. If you want to keep that dark/eerie vibe, you could just layer the pitched down vocals under it to give it a sort of demonic tone. Just an idea
the
the stabs you mentioned earlier are the original pitch but the rest were pitched down. the downpitching was deliberate though. its what all the deep house people are doing.
>4. I would have the vocals sitting lower in the mix and make the kick much more prominent.
yup. once i stretch it out im going to start sidechaining and mixing

>>
>>70349772

If you load Guitar Rig into a DAW it usually loads as as insert effect by default, so the DAW records the clean guitar sound (the unaffected sound of the guitar as it enters the interface at any rate) and then plays it back through the same Guitar Rig insert effect.

This allows you to change the amp models and effects after the fact, since they don't get recorded as audio.

Your other troubles seem to relate to you not having speakers connected to your audio interface, as >>70349355 pointed out you have bought a new audio interface and this now handles all sound going into and coming out of your computer, any other interface (even the Behringer) would also work in the same way.

yea i know but i bought the focusrite solo instead of the behringer because i didnt want to buy extra speaker, because if i use my synth VSTS theres such a short delay that you dont even notice it so buying an interface seemed like a waste of money.
i fixed the problem at least in my pc anyway, some shit in the sound setup of my PC didnt want to change so i had to experiment, in the end i managed to fix it, and after that the cubase also wasnt working but the standalone guitar rig was so i had to reduce the latency in the focusrite solo.
plug and play my ass, fixing that shit took me like 3 hours
one final question, im running fthe focusrite through my amp and of course its sounds like utter shit, can i use my pc speakers as the interface speakers?, assuming i remove the wires that connect it to my pc

>>70338012
hi mememan postin in epic bread
>>
>>70357341
what are your settings on the reverb?
>>
>>70357781
Depends on the song. The most important settings for verb are the main algorithm (hall, chamber, room, sanctuary, plate, spring etc), the room size, then the decay time, pre-delay and send volume (assuming you're using it as a send effect, otherwise it would be wet/dry).

Most importantly, you need to envision the space for your song. Reverb helps the glue the mix and fill the spaces, but its primary job is defining the space. The different algorithms have different reflection characteristics/frequency dispersion qualities, making them sound different. The "size" parameter helps you dial in the size of your room/chamber/hall. A small chamber has many reflections with more high frequency harmonic content than a small room, for ex. The size parameter and main algorithm should be considered together. Plates and springs have different frequency dispersion than chambers or halls, and have unique timbres. Plates are often used for vocals/drums, and springs are often used for guitars, but you can use both on anything.

Then, think about how long you want the reverb to linger in your mix. This is slightly different than "defining the room." A busy mix should probably have a shorter decay time. A sparse mix can stand tons. The pre-delay is just an offset from the time between the dry sound and the time you hear the reverb. This is the most over-looked parameter, but it's amazing how useful it is. Adding a little pre-delay can add separation between your dry sound and your verb, making your dry sound more intelligible and your verb more rhythmic with the tempo of the track. It's often used on snares to get the verb to sit in a rhythmic "pocket" between hits, or add a bit of separation on a vocal. And then with send volume (or wet/dry if using as an insert), you're just deciding the verb volume.

Those are the main parameters. Most of the other common reverb controls can be substituted by processing the reverb return track separately with EQ and modulation.

Just produce tons of music and it will eventually go away, hopefully. That's what happened to me. At the beginning I sometimes directly projected something I heard before from my unconscious mind. One of the first little pieces I played with was literally one song from Elvis. The thing which was suspicious was too good of a harmony for my knowledge, it just sounded too good to be true. Now I don't give a fuck anymore, I'm fairly certain I'm not copying anything. That doesn't mean I found my voice yet, though.

I recommend buying any VST that you really want if it's under $120

If it's something like waves/arturia where some of them are 2004 technology plugins for 400 dollars each then torrent it

I really don't know why they charge hundreds of dollars for a single plugin. It's not a physical product and you can distribute it through torrents. When I see something like Diva is only a hundred dollars and it has all those modules bundled I am guilt tripped into buying it and I'm sure others are too.

This is the gayest thing I've ever heard and I love it you 80's faggot.

Add some reverb to that synth and automate the portamento slightly so that it slides a bit more when it comes back into the top of the bar. I wouldn't make it any more piercing or saturated. It has a nice soft quality. You could modulate the filter cutoff with a long, 2bar lfo if you wanted to add some subtle movement in the sound. Or even a harmony/double when it comes back to the top of the bar. That's all I can think of.

https://clyp.it/fcnk3okv
i can't sing in real life, so i rely on the effects. i can't hold a tone but the quieter i sing, the better it sounds. i need a lot of input gain on the compressor to make it audible. i'm not really sure how to get out the sounds of the inhale etc, but right now i'm just concerned with: does it sound passable (for the type of music i make), or are the effects too obnoxious?

>>
>>70367821

High-pass the reverb so it's not acting on your low notes so much, unless you're going for a sort of vintage Chris Isaak sound, also you can put a gate on your vocal chain before the compressor to cut the inhale sounds - with you singing pretty quiet it'll need some fair tweaking so it doesn't also cut out parts of the vocal itself but that's generally how it's done.
>>
>>70368009
i already had the reverb high passed but i added in another band filter before it too and it sounds a lot better. i also added a gate but my whisper was too close in volume to the inhale, but that'll just be something i have to work on by whispering louder. thanks!
>>
>>70367389
love this. do you remember what synths you used?
>>
>>70368297

I suspected the gate would be tricky - I'd just do some volume automation on the inhale sounds instead then, once you've comped the vocal into a complete track that you're otherwise happy with. Louder whispers might lose their character.
>>
>>70367237

I think the main synth needs some eq work. remove some of the low-mid frequencies and do some fine-tuning in the high end. it should sound like pearls floating around in a clear stream but it's too screechy now
>>
>>70368297
Never underestimate the power of simply automating the fader when stuff like gates and compressors don't work. All it takes is a small vocal fader ride (or even drawing it in with mouse) and your problem is gone. You could also simply cut the audio with the inhale and then add a quick unnoticeable fade-in.

me here.

thanks a lot, do you mean the synth drone throughout or the horns towards the end?

I keep thinking I want to add more percussion but every time I try I find it detracts from what I've got rather than improving anything! and I recorded the vocals myself, always my favourite part of making a song

cheers

piano seems too far in the background, maybe too much reverb or not enough high frequency coming through

percussion could do with more presence, try layering your samples

this is the best one, just maybe consider a chord change, or change the bass note every so often?

The underlying drone yeah, it's really nice and those vocals are impressive, I thought they were sampled.

I remixed the first one and it's a lot more balanced now and I might get a punchier snare for the second one and compress the drums a bit.

Thanks for your advice!

I think it was Arturia Mini V for the bass and NI Pro-53 for the chords, can't be sure though.

How do I get my kick drums to really knock? They just sound puny and weak compared to the rest of the mix, especially when playing off a subwoofer.

compression and lowering the volume of other elements. sidechain helps too.

Vocals sound off key, the second half should have some sort of change up, maybe speed up the chords.

Too much going on instrumentally, none of the sounds complement each other. The drums are pretty basic too. Not awful though.

I was comparing eq graphs it to professional ones (thug metro southside) made it look the same but I guess I gotta rethink listening back with fresh ears maybe your right care to add anything else?

are you an engineer you seem to know a lot?

>>70355127
ahh man make it a bit more interesting also clean out the lows of the other tracks so your bass can be more present

>I was comparing eq graphs it to professional ones (thug metro southside) made it look the same but I guess I gotta rethink listening back with fresh ears maybe your right care to add anything else?

Your mix isn't balanced too well, it needs some gain staging. Your Highend is ear piercing.

That arp gets boring, maybe switch it up in the second half, stretch out the notes or change the octave.Maybe add some chords towards the end too, more of a stylistic thing but vary it up a little. It gets monotonous.

>are you an engineer you seem to know a lot?

No but I will be in a few months
>>
>>70376459
will take all these things into consideration for the nezxt one
about the boringness tho I kinda mirrored this song https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=czLcYFwMdn8

Is there anyway to route maschine groups directly into another daws mixer instead of exporting the stems and loading each one into a track? That's what I'm basically doing right now, but it's time consuming and I'd rather run maschine as a VST within my daw.

I hate how quantized everything sounds in FL Studio. I wish there were an option that would automatically differentiate the velocity and timing just a tiny bit. Instead of doing everything manually...

I just send beats out to local artists that I've met at random events and stuff. I can post my Soundcloud in the soundcloud thread

an older beat I did that I recently remastered. Basic boom bap kind of thing, but with a little bit of trap 808 kind of shit
sample-based, don't normally rely so heavily on samples but was kinda going for that 90s boom bap sound in a way
I know it's pretty repetitive, but a guy is working on a rap for this right now so I left room for him to work

I couple musicians and they happened to know a guy who had a recording studio. He was throwing an open house/beat exchange kinda thing so I came out and hung out for a bit. We hit it off and I come through every now and then. Not really a professional studio desu. He has a space with sound proofing, a recording both and a console lol. My uncle also owned another studio but they went under and he had to close shop.
>>
>>70379960
Classic example of something that starts out vaguely interesting and quickly becomes insufferable only because nothing else happens. The piano riff is cool for like ten seconds. It would probably remain fine if you had something else come in but as of now I'm listening to it for almost a minute thinking "alright man I get it."

I would either lower the volume of the piano track slightly so that something else can come in over the top at ~15 seconds OR rewrite your bass part and have it start doing something interesting underneath. The subby thing is boring imo. I know you've "left room for the rap" but the bass could be more interesting. I really think you should scrap the bass part and write something with more movement. Even just some different notes at times can help change the harmonic feel of the piano riff, making it feel less "samey". I wouldn't worry about the bass feeling too busy under the rap—we can handle a lot of bass movement without getting ear confused since we don't tend to listen to it as much as the higher stuff. It's still a mostly "felt" element so it can do a bit more. Also, the subby part you have isn't very strong on my computer speakers (and I have a subwoofer). It doesn't really hit me in the chest so much as it just feels like a cloudy, pointless vibration.

Last thing, the halting moment at ~55 is not nearly enough of a payoff or palette cleanser before returning to the head. Introduce a weird sound or rhythm to break up the sections, and when you come back introduce a new instrument in the second part. Don't come back exactly the same. Even a part that plays only once or at the top of the return can help renew interest and make me feel like new things are coming, as long as it's a new sound. As it is now, the track feels repetitive even in the short span of 40 seconds. I very quickly "get it" so I quickly become bored. That being said, I enjoy your balance of the "stupid" sample and the main piano thing is alright.
