There's a severe lack of DAW descriptions in the wiki. If you're good with your tool of choice, consider writing a paragraph about it.

Remember to use clyp.it to post your tracks/WIP: posting a clyp.it is just providing sound for a question, posting a Soundcloudlink is making self-advertisement and the thread doesn't need that.

Okay, so I asked this in the last thread and someone said they could help me but they never came through so I'm gonna try again.

Need a female to record a producer tag for me. Should take like 2 seconds. Anyone?

Also, while I'm here. Thoughts?

I taught myself by remaking other people's songs. The first year that I was producing, I just did remakes. For example:

Mine:

The original:

And that's how I learned pretty much everything, by reverse engineering songs.

>>
>>70300642
This is a cool synth but the envelope reset issue is enormous. Recording pads and any long-release patches is essentially a no-go without multitracking. Every time you hit a key the EG resets for the entire sound. Would be a deal breaker if it wasn't so cheap. All of that said, it sounds great otherwise and the sequencer is a joy to play with, very inspiring
>>
Can anyone help me out with this? I have 4 synths and an 18i20 and would like to integrate my guitar pedals into the chain without always unhooking everything. I was looking at patch bays but I'm kind of confused how I'd hook everything up to my 18i20. A lot of the cheaper patch bays are just 1/4in jacks without toggles or anything to switch to stereo/mono. With my 18i20 I can use software to do it I suppose.

I have the rackmount version of the ESQ-1. I like its hybrid digital/analog sound. It has an architecture similar to the way more recent DSI Prophet 12 in that it has digital oscillators but an analog signal path after that. So it has 8 voices polyphony, 3 digital oscillators per voice, 32 digital waveforms on each oscillator, and analog Curtis chip filters and VCAs. Its features are deep but you're gonna have to menu dive to program it although its display screen is somewhat larger than other digital synths of the era.

Does anybody know how I can get the synth lead sound from this song? I've tried saw waves and a lowpass filter, but it doesn't have the same magic. Serious question.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vSUW-Z_Cnc0

>>70302693
I actually really liked this. The composition and use of effects (mainly the reverb) was great. The mixing/production could sound a little more polished, but that will come with time. I'm not great at it myself, so I don't have any specific advice regarding that. One minor critique is that the lead vocals sound just slightly pitchy in just a couple of places. Overall really good, though.
>>
>>70307720
is the Can-OB version coming soon?
>>
>>70308131
That's a version of I Feel Love by Donna Summer. It became a gay club song but the sounds from that record are like a part of electronica's history. I've tried to recreate the bass sound, it's actually a delay btw.
And for the lead I think it's a saw with some voices and detune.
>>
>>70297642
Two things that stand out that I don't like.
The kick's too heavy and I don't like the way you use the 808 crash on every quarter note when you do. I prefer to use it as an accent. Maybe replace it with something else. It's too harsh for the mix you got going.

What's everyone's opinion on the 808 crash?
>>
>>70298391
I like the way you think.
>>
>>70304114
the "chong" synth you've got going sounds fucking harsh. i don't like it. the muted breakbeat in the background sounds okay, some beats are out of place though. i'm not a big fan of the saw you use either.

The trance beat is okay too. Layer more synths on it. The hat and snare stand out a little too much though.

Your friend probably experienced the difference between playing a song he wrote and mixing/producing it himself?

Also when I said I'm extremely musically gifted I didn't mean I piss excellence when I pick up an instrument. I meant that I have the desire to continuously study music and use it to improve my own work.
Every musician/producer is his/her own harshest critic and until they hear someone else's opinion they will always think their stuff is sub par. The key is to channel that self-criticism into productivity and growth, and not do what these poor devils (>>70295688, >>70298258) are doing.

nah, my friend is/was a huge egoed cunt. when he heard even a slightest bit of criticism he would go on a relentless spree of how he studied music for so long that his songs cant sound bad. needless to say music production isnt 'our' hobby anymore.

i feel like i came out on top though, when we started he was already extremely well off on writing music and he didnt feel the need to improve. i however had to constantly learn new things while patching him up on the sound design, mixing and mastering side of things. eventually learned how to write music for my own. his music still sounds like a 12yo with a cracked FL Studio.

the shit electronic kind.
>do you upload it anywhere?
nope, mostly because ive not yet finished a track i know represents my level of skill properly.
>>
>>70310810
>nope, mostly because ive not yet finished a track i know represents my level of skill properly

as someone who used to be that way, this mindset will really keep you from growing. almost every artist goes through tons of different names and projects, and uploading and sharing things is the only way you will get feedback and build motivation to consistently finish work. even if the stuff you make now is absolute shit you don't have to attach your actual identity to things and as long as you're growing as a producer who fucking cares?
>>
>>70310810
Kek. I don't think electronic music has to be bad, though. Genre mixing and adding live instruments are the key things that I look at when assessing electronic music, keeps it interesting in my opinion.

>...I've not yet finished a track that represents my level of skills properly

I feel that. I was like this until very recently (2-3 months ago). Ive been recording my own music for 3 to 4 YEARS and only just started uploading and sharing my tracks, and the amount of progress I can see is quite significant. Not in music playing but in production.
I urge you not to sit on your projects for too long because you'll grow faster when you start to get your stuff out there.
>>
>>70310972
yeah, i guess. and i dont think my work is absolute shit, in fact im quite pleased with what im able to cook up. the problem is that i know that i can do better. and i find it really really hard to work on projects ive no interest for at all.
>>
>>70310972
Well there you go. Didn't even see your post and we basically said the same shit

See>>70311086
I guess most people go through the same phase of stagnation before they start uploading their tunes.
>>
>>70311192
yeah, I've been producing for almost 6 years now on and off and I feel like after the first two years or so it was nothing but stagnation filled with small bursts of rapid advancement.

what really kicked me in the ass was seeing friends who started years after me get better than me because they more consistently finished and shared things. they all built a network of support through sharing their tracks, and for a few of them that allowed them to get their work noticed by some pretty big players. one in particular is opening for one of my favorite artists in a month or so and they only started producing maybe two years back. I couldn't be more jealous since I remember thinking their stuff was garbage when they first started, to top it off they used to constantly bug me for production advice and spam soundcloud links on everything.

but yeah to get to my point sharing music doesn't just help you get feedback, it helps you meet other producers who are either better or in the same position as you, allowing you to share info and advice. imagine having a whole dedicated crew to back up your own knowledge, instead of having to post on /prod/ all the time?
>>
>>70311559
True, man. True, true, true. I don't even have many friends that make music (or friends that listen to good music for that matter...), so I learnt almost everything by myself and alongside my brother sometimes.

I guess I had that stagnated feeling when I was only sending my bro finished tunes and started realising that music is subjective. Eventually I wanted to know what other people think of my material, ya know?
I too, wanna build a network of musicians and producers that supports one another with projects. Sounds like a dream.
>>
>>70310031

"FINISHED IS ALWAYS BETTER THAN PERFECT."

Woah dude, makes me think. I'm always trying to create a masterpiece (my standards for that atm are a great composition and listenable production), but I always end up throwing every project in the bin of unfinished tracks.

The problem is that it's hard for me to keep believing in the song after some time. It always sounds too simple-ish and basically not like something that I'd like to create. Am I the only one who can work on projects with genres I don't ever even listen to?
>>
>>70305702

Is everything clear to you? I'm not sure what to do with the chords at the bottom, they still seem muddy and weird. Anybody has any tips how to improve the clarity?

I tried reducing mids from the chords and boosting a bit of the top end on the lead.

I'm trying to recreate the snare from one song I'm remaking for practice. I'm not sure if I'm doing it the right way.

Am I supposed to go through a super wide search for something that sounds almost the same, or should I use EQ to carve the same sound out? I found something similar, and I'm trying to make it sound the same with EQ, but I can't get that high end right. It's a bit muddy and noisy, but at the same time bright.

This is the song:

How do I improve my flow?

I know my lyrics are retarded, but they're supposed to be. It's shitty satire and hyperbole.

I know my beats are generic, but I like them that way.

I just want to improve my flow. When I write lyrics, I get a rhythm in my head and I follow it, but people say it's too repetitive. How do I learn new rhythms.

I practice regularly and I listen to music every day during my commute, but it's just not helping. Anyone have any good tips?

>inb4 Kill yourself.

>>
Jesus Christ, how can you guys find the right drum samples when you are remaking stuff? I don't even see the point of doing this now, I just can't find anything that sounds right. It is taking so much time.

What am I actually learning from this process?
>>
>>70317494
remaking stuff teaches you more about parts of a song, structure/arrangement. I take it you are getting too hung up on making everything sound identical... program the entire song first, you can go back and tweak the samples later in the process
>>
That's also true, yeah. I mostly find it useful for the arrangement. But I heard this is a good way of getting really good at production as a whole. I want to improve my mixing, mastering, compression, EQ etc. because it just doesn't sound professional at all. I don't know how useful it is.

Some DAWs allow you to create an AUX Return / external effect track. Essentially a track that routes audio from inside your DAW to an output on your Audio Interface so it can be processed externally and routes back into the DAW on the same track via an input on the audio interface

If you DAW doesn't have this feature, you'll just need to create 2 regular AUX tracks. Send audio from within to the DAW to the first track (keep monitoring off) and have it's output go to an output channel on your audio interface. On the second track, make it's input come from an input on your audio interface (keep monitoring on). then run the output channel into the pedals and their output into the input channel.

Keep in mind doing this will typically double your latency

I don't know how to achieve that effect right before the drop when it sounds like the bass is going to explode or whatever. It sounds like some EQ automatization so I tried that out, but it can be barely heard.

More feedback is appreciated. I think I'll wrap this up soon. Planning to remake one track per day for some practice. I don't think I should care that much to get the exact same sounds, though. I just want to improve my mixes and general production with this, hopefully it will be worthwhile.

ex. chords. layering different sounds to support the current sound fills a lot of the empty space. like adding filtered supersaw pads to support a piano.

choose a genre, lay a beat, some chords and a melody in the general range of the genre, adjust to taste.

>>70328651

It depends on the idea that you're developing. Most times I'll have a melody or a bassline or maybe even just a hihat pattern in my head that I start with and I match the initial bpm to that, then I'll do a trial mix and come back to it next day.

At that point the first listen usually reveals whether the song is too speedy or if it's dragging, sometimes a new element added will reveal it but if you're using MIDI and warped audio you have flexibility to change up or down right up to the point you do your final mix.

Send tracks have the benefit of allowing separate processing. You can't eq or compress the reverb alone without compressing the dry signal if the effect is on the track. If you have the reverb on a send, you can do things like filter out the low end in your verb (to combat muddiness), compress it, or add harmonic excites and other cool things. If you just stick in on a track, you'd be filtering out/compressing/exciting the dry track as well, no matter where you stick your effects in the chain. Either before or after the verb, you can't do separate processing without a separate track.

Also, it's much easier to handle the amount of reverb between multiple tracks by adjusting the various receives on the reverb track rather than going into each track's individual reverb plugin. It also makes it easier to automate the global reverb volume across all tracks (or mute the verb for certain sections). It also saves CPU.
>>
>>70330161
>If you have the reverb on a send, you can do things like filter out the low end in your verb (to combat muddiness),
idk about the compress or harmonic excites but you can filter out the low end in the default fl studio reverb VST

this seems like a valid point, but what if i want different amounts of reverb for different tracks?
also can i use the send as like a separation thing (all drums/synth/vocals into one send then to master)?

it's normally better to use one or two reverbs (usually a short and a long one) rather than different ones for each track so that the instruments sound like they were recorded in the same room

>but what if i want different amounts of reverb for different tracks
That's how a send works. Think of it almost like you're sending a percentage of the dry track to the reverb track (in db's) to get an equivalent amount of reverb "back" on the return track. You set the reverb track's reverb to 100%wet (so that you don't add more dry track volume into your mix) and you send as only as much signal as you want reverb. If you send unity gain (0db/ or "100%", sorta like "full signal" for a simple way of thinking about it) you'll get lots of reverb. If you send say, minus -25db, you'll get a lot less. The sends are a way to balance your reverb between many tracks.

For ex:

Let's say I have a reverb track set up with a drum plate reverb plugin. Set to 100% wet.

Send -15db snare
Send -20db hi-hat
Send -10db cymbal
Send -30db overhead
Send -30db room mic

In this setup, my room and overheads are getting the least reverb, then the hi-hat, then the snare, and the cymbal has the most. If I want a track to have more reverb, I just send more. If I want less, I send less. Now all my track's reverbs are balanced (via send volumes) on one track and they can all be processed together. A compressor will act on them together, and some color compressors can subtley saturate the verb. Adding to the "glue" effect. And you can add flangers, phasers, chorus, distortion, tape saturation, autopan--all just to your verb track. You might be able to eq the lows within the verb plugin, but then you're stuck with that eq algorithm. If you use the send method, you can use a dedicated EQ with different qualities. Your options are endless. Also, my different tracks are balanced together on one track, but I still have the reverb return's fader to balance/automate the overall reverb volume for the mix. So I can have my "verb mix" setup on the track, and I can raise/lower it for certain sections. If I want to change the "verb mix" for different sections, I can automate the send volumes.

quite beautiful actually. the 'most generic clap #23' shatters my eardrums and to be quite honest, sounds like shit. i would find something else for a clap, but thats just me.

anyone have a link to where i can get some break samples?

That's about right; most edm is for dancing on drugs I mean who the fuck would want to actually listen to it

try not to invoke PEE PEE

THIS ENTIRE SONG IS PEE PEE

AND PISS

It's like Flight of Bumblebee but instead of it feeling like bee it feels like pee, the whole thing, the auditory essence of urination

Get a vending machine route and fill claw machines instead of doing this.

I can't add variation to my songs. I get one set of arrangements right (that sounds right to my ears anyway), then I cannot for the life of me build upon it. It's driving me insane.

so you're just saying it's bad?

>friendly reminder also to lower the volume of other elements when you add a new one. otherwise youll run out of headroom and your mix will sound muddy.

Can anybody explain this? How to do it properly? Just automatize volumes?
>>
>>70336390
just turn down the master, there is no such thing as headroom in the digital domain
>>
>>70336390
Not him but I start the track volumes at -12db then later I'll select all tracks and raise them together stopping before the red

a music noob with only very basic knowledge of theory/synthesis wants to get a synth
minilogue vs ms-20 mini?
sorry if this is the wrong thread for this
>>
>>70337402
I'd start with a monosynth, so the miniloge would be out of question
the ms20 mini is nice because you can fiddle around with patching, very nice haptic expericence, but it's noisy
something like the new monologue is arguably better (cleaner) quality tech, but it's not as flexible
maybe go to a store and play around with some of the affordable monosynths to see what you like

What are songs that you consider too compressed?
Where do you personally find the balance between compression and dynamic range?
>>
>>70337545
in 99% of all cases there's a fairly obvious point beyond it which your master starts sounding like complete crap as in you really notice that you're not only sacrificing a bit of transient snap but you're really destroying something
where that point is depends on a few things: mostly your skill and experience, your tools, your/people's genre expectations and what tracks you A/B your master with
