How can I not fuck this up, gents? I really want to learn how to play, but I can't tell if what I've done was an impulse buy or not.
This may not be necessarily a /mu/-esque question, but I don't really know where else to go to ask a question like this.

Guitar is a boring instrument.
I bought mine on an impulse and I have been regretting it everday
step 1: practice enough to play some basic song
step 2: play it for ignorant womemes
step 3: drown in pussy
you're too old to git gud, so don't even bother with that
start learning arpeggios
skip chords
take lessons

Yeah, but how you enjoy it depends on a lot of different factors, right?
Why haven't you gone any further with yours?
>>70272456
I'm 19, well within the bell curve.
>>70272468
Shouldn't I dig in into the instrument first before deciding on lessons? I don't really like lessons, I'm more of a self-learner.

>19
outta the game.
find something else bro.
jk dude learn advanced techniques asap. learn on youtube or some shit.

I'm not really trying to be the next big thing, my friend. I just want to jam out a bit and learn some cheesy riffs, get into the groove again, so they say. I used to play in an orchestra in high school, and have been missing that feeling ever since.
I don't understand why I'd need to learn adv. techs first, but I'll take your advice into consideration.
Daily reminder that learning guitar in 2017 is like learning ancient Greek or how to program in fortran, except even less useful. Guitar is quickly becoming irrelevant, and with good reason. Learn to play keys.

I'm not doing it for any monetary gains whatsoever.
In essence, me wanting to learn the guitar is like you choosing to shitpost specifically on 4chan.
Learn all open chords and then bar chords.
Practice pentatonic scales. Then move on to the modes (Aeolian, locrian, Ionian etc..) use the Aeolian mode to jam over songs in minor keys, root it off the 6th string. Likewise Ionian for major keys, rooted off the 6th.
Jam I've long songs like stuff from Ancestors or Earthless.
Also a quick tip for the neck...
Frets 3,5,7 on 6th string are notes G A B
Same frets, 5th string are C D E.
Should help orientate you.
Always practice.

This is exactly what I was looking for, thanks a lot. I'll probably frame this somewhere.
Quick question: how do I tune a string? Do I just pluck the open string? Or do I have to play a tuning note?
>>70272559
>I don't really like lessons, I'm more of a self-learner.
congratulations youre a human being, but if you want to learn proper technique take at least a couple lessons. if not, dont
>>70273233
Alright, I'll look more into it then.
What should be a good per-hour rate for a lesson?
>>70273388
$20-40 per hour my guitar lessons were $20 a week for half an hour lessons

We have a specific general for these questions.

I'm not the best tuner. Either get a cheap tuner to that clips on your headstock or listen to an open E and get that. Then you play the 6th string, 5th fret (an A note) and tune the 5th string to that A on string 6. Do that for all except for the B(2nd string) hold the G(3rd string) on the 4th fret.
Or YouTube it lmao
