Discuss the extraordinary artist Claire Elise Boucher aka Grimes.

Could you handle this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lhNxvoXOKcI ?
I didn't care for AA at first, it was the first Grimes album that didn't do it for me, but it's really growing on me. Kill V Maim goes hard.
>>70258836
Many people don't give that album a fair chance.
>>70258882
They should.
>>70259574
Indeed. AA has a lot to offer and a lot of staying power.

Are there any people here who voted for Trump or are right-wing? I wanted to ask you how do you reconcile your political leanings with listening/liking Grimes' music or liking her persona.

Do you care about Grimes' politics?
>>70260592
Do you skip Venus Fly? What do you think about the videos for Flesh Without Blood and Kill V Maim? What do you think about Grimes shilling for the Left? Why do you sexualize Grimes even though she's said she's against it?
>>70260545
Libertarianism is sometimes considered right-wing, I guess, so I'll take a crack at it.
1. I don't have to. They're independent of one another and her music is explicitly apolitical.
2. Grimes kind of has a libertarian mentality of, "do what you want, but let me do what I want, and if you're an asshole to me, I'll call you out on it." She has said she can't stop people from sexualizing her, even though she would like them to stop.
3. She didn't endorse Hillary until the very end, which shows that she doesn't agree with the political establishment. And no, Trump is not a "punk" movement, he's a populist movement and played the game of fearmongering and mudslinging (just like any politician), and regularly abused the corrupted system that has installed itself since the Fed was established.
4. I tend to agree with her on social issues, but I don't think we should have hate crimes or force people to do things they don't want to.
>>70260675
>Do you hate gay ppl, jews, non-whites, etc?
i want grimes to be an epic trap, 99% of girls i fap to i fantasize about them being one
>Do you care about Grimes' politics?
not really, all her interviews are from like fucking 2-3 years ago and she doesnt talk on social media so i dont know much else about her
other than she apparently is sexing the girl whos always in her video, including the lastest one a few weeks ago
>>70260545

>>70260545
I voted Trump and I like AA. I haven't read about her political leanings at all.
So far AA is the only album I'm truly obsessed with.
If Grimes's political views are the complete opposite of mine, that just means we have different opinions on how to "fix" America and that has no effect on how I view Grimes as an artist.
I am not a white male. Grimes is cute but I do not sexualize or fap to Grimes desu.

Conservative leaning libertarian who hates the two party system but voted for Trump because of the prospect of a Hillary presidency being even more appalling checking in.
Imo both options sucked, but Hillary would've been worse. Grimes also hates the two party system, but was more jaded against Trump because of her environmentalist tendencies. I have absolutely no problem seeing past our ideological divide since it really isn't all that big. Plus she isn't (yet) a U.S. citizen, so her opinions on U.S. politics are purely academic. Plus she's an artist who is extremely redpilled about her own fallibility (see caption of pic related.) Which is an EXTREMELY welcome thing to see in this day and age desu.
>>70260545

*Grimes white knight defense force assembles*
>>70262794
More their own countries, actually. But they will show up to American and European parties every now and then. Where the fuck else are they going to go?
The rest of Asia doesn't party. Australia and South Africa sucks and they don't go to South America for obvious reasons.
Also partying isn't really a "high culture" thing in the slightest. High culture parties fucking suck, they are basically luncheons with wine. No drugs to speak of, and having more than a few glasses of wine will end up with you being ostracized for the evening.
Fuck upper echelon parties. They are so sterile and stilted I've gone to 4 different such occasions in my life and it always feels like a huge waste of time. Welcome to the world of old money, filled with dipshit gold diggers popping xanax every hour and creepy old men who lost touch with reality decades ago. Everybody exists in some stupid fantasy land that's fake as fuck and completely based around the formalization of manners.

i have supported Grimes with my money, and I am no longer a free loader.
Thank you Grimes.
>>70264306
>implying grimes will have any money from that merch
>>70264371
Fuck, why not. I'm canceling
i would have just bought art angels but it's sold out on the grimes store.
I didn't know that the merch and music would be different in their financial supporting of Grimes.
>>70264389
idk, but i wouldn't be sure about that
grimes looks exactly like this girl i knew in high school and she was a little crazy and a bit of a mess and i'm certain grimes is a lovely person in real life but i'm always a little weirded out because she reminds me SO much of someone i would rather not be reminded of
>>70264440
Because the merch store, her label and lots of other things will all take a cut and Grimes will get like $5 out of my $70 huh.
Thats dumb. I just wanted to support the artist for making AA.
>>70264490
It is more money than she gets from Spotify and iTunes.
It's probably more money than she makes from vinyl sales.
>>70264507
It's not about the merch, I just got it because yolo and support Grimes. I didn't think about all the middle men that will take a cut as it filters down.
I would have just rather donated what I spent directly and just bought AA off Amazon.
But I'm not going to cancel my order I just hope she'll get a reasonable cut of it.
>>70264490
same here. i would just give all my money to her if i could
>>70264534
Honestly the merch is a reasonable investment, assuming you aren't a NEET it will at the very least provide some nonaggressive press to your social circles. Merch and tickets are a huge income source for most artists nowadays.
>>70264548
I'd donate $100 directly but not if my $100 becomes cut 3 ways and Grimes is left with $10 out of my original $100.
It's done I'm not canceling my order. But had I known about the middle manning I would have just bought AA only.
>>70264593
i mean, people who make the shirts gotta get paid too, that's just how it works
>>70264585
I don't have social circles, I would just wear it inside mostly.
Anyway this all started because of >>70264371
I know my money will support her so I'm not going to think about it any more.
Not a neet.
>>70264602
Yeah
Scream is the worst grimes song
>>70264653
I like it.
Been listening to Butterfly and Pin.
If Grimes asked her fans for a dollar each, would you give her one?
>>70264665
I just spent $70 on """merch""" I coulda made myself with supplies from good will.
Yes I'd give her more than a few. It would be easy if artists had their own little paypal anonymous donation box that sends all donations directly to them.
This middle man culture in music is cancer.
That's just how the record industry works, they're the ones who gets wealthy off the hype created by the music of the artist when fans buy CDs or merchandise, thinking their money is supporting the artist.
But all the money gets pooled into the label, and they pay the artist whatever out of the total sales pool.
>>70264620
>not a NEET
>don't have social circles
challenging case
What is Grimes net worth? Is she the richest indie pop artist today?
Sorry Grimes, I think Art Angels is the best album in years and I just wanted to support you but you're working for the man too, just like I am.
Love ya
>>70264665
Is that even a question? Sure, I would even donate all my organs to her.
>>70264882

Art Angels is a masterpiece. But she's a label pig now.
>>70264959

>>70264983
Everyone is. Everyone grows up. She gave us a treasure.
>>70264983
She's obviously all about the art and has even consistenly made efforts to making everything in her brand more affordable.
>>70264959
>But she's a label pig now.
not true, she still does what she wants
>>70265037
>>70265038
No regrets, considering Art Angels was produced under her label.
Like she kept it in her heart and finally got it down in AA.
They produced it out from Grimes. Grimes and her label are one.
>>70264758
sounds like working at mcdonalds
>>70265074
bullshit. AA is what Grimes always wanted to make since her first attempts to make music and she finally made it
>>70265094
She did, absolutely. But her label helped her, or at least provided the needed environment and encouragement for Grimes to pull Art Angels from nothing.
Her label takes good care of Grimes. It's a symbiotic thing and I take back some of the things I've said. I'm kinda in love and fell into a hysteria over Grimes in a committed relationship with a masculine entity, even if that entity happens to be her employer.
>>70265107
> her label helped her, or at least provided the needed environment
dude, she produced it in her bedroom
Oh god, I never used to like Grimes, but these fuckin threads Im starting to like some of her stuff...
>>70265161
Oh.
Ok well if she wants a dollar from me directly I'll give her 10. I'm salty over buying overpriced merch thinking it'll support her. It does but after cuts.
>>70265164
Art Angels.
>>70262304
>I just hope y'all know your fuckin cyber-utopia of neon lights and endless partying is only possible in the environment of Western high culture.
Unless a culture has morphed or a new one arises in the future. There are difficulties in implementing anything in a society that has a lot of built in disparity or laws that prevent people from doing what they want but cultures gradually change with influence all the time and the changes are often dramatic once you inject a vast amount of ressources into any economy. Western capitalism is just the most efficient system at doing this right now which in turn also influences the culture of the country that it is affecting.
>>70265161
That's right. And this is exactly why a lot of people here are pretending to hate her. Jealousy of her success.
You're good peoples. Pardon my mind.
>>70265350

The "man" being 4AD, a legendary indie label, the one that released Visions as it was, without trying to alter the music.
>Who Says Girls Can't Find Music? We Talked to the Female A&R Who Signed Grimes
>Because of the internet, there’s so much information all the time. It’s not about when you hear about someone, it’s about when they grab your attention so hard you can’t ignore it anymore. With Grimes, I was already aware of her, she’d made two albums and an EP. I was on my way to Pop Montreal, and I met her manager at the time, who ran the label she was on, and found out that they were looking for a partnership, someone that they could work with outside of Canada. Her music at that point was not obviously commercial, so they were talking to independent labels. There were a lot who really liked her, but I remember Claire saying we were pretty much the only ones who would take Visions and put it out just as it was, other labels apparently asked for her to rework it with a producer.
>The other thing I would say about Grimes is that there was so much happening around her at that time that I assumed she was already working with a bigger label. The first time I went to see her play and I was kicking myself for missing that opportunity. It was the best show I’d seen for a new artist at that time. The next day I met her manager and they said they were looking for partners and I literally ran back to my room to email my boss her record. What I’m trying to say is that you don’t need a label anymore to get things started, a good label will enhance what you are already doing. By the time Claire was signed, she was already releasing records on a small imprint, touring and doing interviews, and she had a visual presence. These days, a label has the most impact if you’ve already got the wheels in motion before they’ve got involved.

i downloaded AA from i-Tunes and it sounds fine there
>>70275127
ya i should download the digital version. i wanted the CD version because i wanted to play it in my car, and i immediately noticed it didn't sound the same.
i wasn't catching the same feeling.
so the Cd version -was- compressed, i'm not crazy.
HAHAHA so Grimes can't shower, she can't speak properly, and now she can't record a proper album.
Where's the Grimes pimple hair face when you need it
if i were Grimes, i'd be pissed at the label for skimping out on the quality in the CD.
digital version seems fine though, assuming that's the version uploaded by Clapham Junction on YT.

>>70275226
>Don't make fun of my grimesith
they had to compress the quality of the music so they could add that little extra "realiti demo"?
or maybe they had to compress the quality so they could fit all her tracks on one CD, and they added the demo as an extra because there was space leftover.
they should have just released Art Angels as a 2 cd release and kept the quality as high as possible.
The main draw in Art Angels is her singing, and in the CD version it is muted and the synthetic beats are much louder than her singing.
The reason why I didn't like Visions all that much is because her singing was the background instead of the main element.
Ily Grimes, im gonna buy the digital version. CD version can be a souvenir or something.
>>70264959
shes signed to 4AD idiot, they're to good for that
>>70275097
Here's a comparison of the waveforms. If it matters, the bottom one is your YouTube link. Where do you think this random uploader got the files from?
>>70276159
i'm not sure how to read those lines, but it looks like the bottom lines have more "dark compression" in that one chunk.
the youtube uploader probably got it from Google Music or itunes music, the samples in Google music is good quality, i'll buy that later.
this is the link for google's AA.

The conclusion I drew is there's no difference. Mastering engineers charge a lot of money, it would be unusual to hire one to make 2 separate digital masters. iTunes AAC or mp3 from another vendor will be the same files except compressed, unlike the CD bitstream. Do what you will, though.
It is a tad disappointing it's so brickwalled on some of the songs but we can't do anything about it.
>>70276364
trust me there's a big big difference for me. i agree it cant be helped, CD's are just outdated tech i suppose, you admit it yourself that there's "brickwalling" oh yeah there's a lot of that.
Digital > superior.
yeah you don't need to remaster anything, all im saying is that the CD version is cheaper quality than the digital version.
The digital version (the one that is already out), is the master piece.
the CD version doesn't capture the same magic because its compressed.
>>70276364
Could it be just a pirate CD in your store?
We all know that AA leaked few days before the official release and quality of "that" was awful.
>>70276524
>>70276364
digital version > CD version.
these were constructive critiques, i hope.
t. grimesfag
>>70276364
youtube ""quality" is a thing of its own. they use compresion/loudness algorithms + it depends if the source came from cd, vinyl or mp3.
>>70276526
i can't confirm that, it looks authentic to me. it came in a cardboard case with the AA graphic on the front, and Grimes bikini/spandex posing in the back.
>>70276526
Actually the top one is the 24bit/96kHz hi res file which is exactly the same as the CD version so I'm pretty certain that's just how it was mastered.
>>70276586
cd's just can handle 16 bit/44.1khz soooo
only an autistic person would notice the difference in compression by ear, eh? XDDDD
>>70276626
I just mean the waveform, which is solely dependent on mastering. HDTracks also has this note:
>44kHz sources mastered to 96kHz/24bit.
https://www.hdtracks.com/art-angels
And the frequencies do indeed cut off at CD levels. Whoever mastered it sucks and only made a CD version.
w-what's gonna happen, did i get someone in trouble? xd
>>70276677
then go listen to .xm files if you want zero compression you mong
she compresses the samples and stems before she even gives them to her mixer, she's said as much in interviews before.
at any rate, youtube compresses to 192khz at anything higher than 480p, which is granular enough to not matter. you ARE an autist if you care at that point. a pretentious autist.
>>70274506
surgery? what?
>>70276951
.. it matters to me, i am her fan!
her fan :*(
>>70276780
well, the waveform represents the volume/loudness of the music.
the spectral/fft image just shows the frequency range + how loud the freqs are.
44kHz source is a "poor" source, because kHz relates to resolution (similar to visual mediums).
you can't add resolution to source quality of a recording but it benefits in the mastering stage, if you're using higher resolution, because your plugins, etc will use a higher sampling rate.
another ting to keep in mind is that the human ear is physicaly not able to hear above 20kHz.
another thing is that for playback reasons, the bitrate doesn't matter, it's just important for recording.
>>70277007
i noticed a difference, im special.
>>70276780
>And the frequencies do indeed cut off at CD levels.
You can't hear frequencies above CD level anyway (22kHz). Even your speakers/headphones can't play those frequencies above CD level. These HD tracks are a scam.
Read this https://people.xiph.org/~xiphmont/demo/neil-young.html
>>70276960

some months ago someone recommended gang gang dance as they influenced grimes, how i can't remember
i got to listen to them one week ago and i'm loving it, time spent in these threads wasn't worthless after all
shitposting aside, there's a difference otherwise i wouldn't say anything.
>>70277007
>another ting to keep in mind is that the human ear is physicaly not able to hear above 20kHz.
This. The above CD formats (e.g. 96kHz/24 bit) are needed during editing music (to have room for sounds). For listening, the CD range (44.1 kHz, 16 bit is more than enough).
In any case, there are plenty of ABX tests to prove this fact.

Grime's singing in Art Angels can only induce euphoria in the non-compressed or less compressed version, the digital version.
CD version is just a souvenir for me.
who the fuck buys CD's anymore, anyway? CD stores are kinda dying, people only go in there to scope out other people, it's like a Starbucks.
>>70277042
I've read it. Only trying to make the case that the CD is the "definitive" version since it's the best available quality and comes with the REALiTi demo.
>>70277186
cool to know, great music for realzz
i had to SKIP over "Flesh without Blood", and even "Art Angels" in my car because i couldn't enjoy it.
I skipped all the songs all the way to realiti, then i adjusted the bass and treble and it was pretty good.
but I NEVER skip over Art Angels or Flesh without blood.
And I couldn't enjoy Pin or Butterfly.
How can I enjoy Grimes if I'm not autistically blasting Art Angels at full volumes from my old corolla??
i should just get an ipod and go digital but i'm a dinosaur. and i enjoy the Cd art.
>>70277204
Still those mixing/mastering issues are not linked to the CD format. They could have been avoided.
>>70277317

>>70277455
i listened to it on the way home, but i took it out of my car and its been shelved.
i can't play it with pride in its current frequency or w/e it is that is the CD format, i can't enjoy that.
it sounds FLAT.
Art Angels is vibrant.
>>70277532
>FLAT
like all of grimes' music
>>70277643
no way, Jose!.
Art Angels is a master piece of the modern age, but its sound cannot be captured in this crappy CD format that it was released in.
Grime's singing is like a Siren singing, this shit would make sailors crash their boats and drown if they heard it out at sea.

I'm glad she is not like that slag Sarah Midori Perry.
>>70278569
love the song - one of her best, dislike the video
"Grimes", or Claire is simply a vessel for the pure gift of love and music that she carries in herself.
If French is the language of Love undisputed, then Grimes is living and undiscovered French royalty, her lineage traced back to French Dukes and Duchesses who perfected the art of courtship and romance in the highest arena before the King and Queen. Grimes is perhaps a direct and secret heir of French Queens and Antonio Vivaldi, such is her gift of music and the love expressed in her compositions.
To be in the direct presence of Grimes is to be uplifted and to know real joy. Her friends know this truth deep in their hearts, and they follow her footsteps in rhythm to the beating of their hearts.
Watch out world, Grimes is out to amaze us all. If you have ears then you can experience the exquisite joy that is her latest masterpiece, Art Angels, available now in Google Play and Itunes!
>>70278569

shes talented and makes good pop
also she's a total dude which is cool i guess. she's also easily the most memeable artist on the scene right now, being post internet and all that.
im just glad these threads stick around. better that people meme about an actual artist instead of fantano. these threads are no more worse than any other general on this board, ie /metal/, /bleed/, /kpop/, /daily/, etc.
>>70281549
i should add she prolly doesn't appreciate it, lol
she seems to take herself very seriously, which is strange because she hasn't made it quiiiiite yet. though looking through some of the interviews posted in this thread, it seems like she's always taken herself super seriously.

yeah she's intense. she definitely has her relaxed moments though im sure, but during her shows she summons all of her power.

>>70281659
She's also her harshest critic. Not only she admitted her flaws many times but she even scrapped a lot of music considered by her not good enough, despite the fact it was probably amazing (e.g. Realiti was originally on that scrapped album made after Visions; the song David wasn't even released).

When I found out the Grimes' ex-boyfriend's name was Devon I thought it was a more-than-fair assumption that the song Devon was about him but has Claire ever actually said anything about this ?
>>70284155
Seems like they aren't over each other. He got in the way of her art, relationships drain so much out of people it's better to not be in one.
are we all just kissing her ass?
>>70284394
i wish i could
I can't hang around like this either, I butted heads with Devon unknowingly because I got carried away in my waifuism and he was feeling sore.
I found out he sabotaged the cd version of Art Angels and the Amazon mp3 version by noting the drop in quality but the way it all played out was something.
The truth is we all end up alone to protect ourselves from being swallowed up under someone else's puppet strings.
Sometimes they're unbearable and other times they're invisible.
I'm a sad r9k poster that found solace listening to Art Angels, and my good deed is done.

no, he supposedly wrote a song about it and from his perspective + what grimes says in devon, it's pretty clear that he's the one who broke up with her because she was too distant.
>>70281659
Imo Grimes is clearly someone who takes herself very seriously - except when she doesn't. Personally I love people like that. You can never be certain about what to expect from them - which tends to make them extremely entertaining as friends. Fwiw people like that have a tendency to make for excellent comedic actors. It's just one of those things.
