There's a severe lack of DAW descriptions in the wiki. If you're good with your tool of choice, consider writing a paragraph about it.

/prod/ IRC is up!
To join, you can go tohttp://www.rizon.net/chat
Choose a nick, put #/prod/ as channel. Enter!
Or you can get a lightweight desktop client herehttps://hexchat.github.io/downloads.html

Remember to use clyp.it to post your tracks/WIP: posting a clyp.it is just providing sound for a question, posting a Soundcloudlink is making self-advertisement and the thread doesn't need that.

Remember to check other peoples' clyp.it links to keep the thread healthy.

a little something I made yesterday

https://clyp.it/w52dsymd

drums are one audio file cause I mixed down all clips through tape to make one file, but now I'm wanting to add reverb to the snare. As best as I can explain it, is there a way to trigger reverb by certain transients/frequencies like you would trigger a side-chained compressor? Like could I make a send for the drum track that I eq out to only be the transients of the snare (but not have this bus go to stereo out) that would trigger the reverb for the entire drum track?

If I want to produce classical music and/or pop music with acoustic guitars etc. that means I don't have to focus on practicing synthesis and sound design much, right?

What should I focus on the most to get a quality sound, then?

Hey

It's the guy who wanted to buy the Rode NT5.
I wanted to start out by buying 1 and recording with it for a bit, before buying another 1 or a matched pair, however i read some customer review on a site, where the person said they will sell their Rode NT5 and buy a matched pair instead once they can afford it.

Is that guy just retarded or is there actually a difference between buying a matched pair and just buying 2 NT5 S one after the other? Seems as though the matched pair is just a bundle.

So, I'm studying controls of one synth and advanced synthesis in general and I have to ask a question.

Do you guys know exactly what will happen when you twist a certain knob, or is it always just an experimentaion to some degree? E.g. now I can know what every parameter of plate effect does, but I don't know how would I be able to know exactly what to do if I want to achieve a specific sound other than just trying everything out.

Knowing what every knob does is just the beginning. After a while you will know how things sound. To stick with your example knowing how a plate reverb will effect a sound. It's very similar to classical musicians who can hear a composition in their head even if they just read it on paper.

I don't understand why would you tell me this while there still is a ton of music with that progression along with all the other ones. That doesn't mean it is automatically generic just because it uses the same chord progression.

If the melody is bad, that's a whole another thing, but it's stupid to bash something because it uses a popular progression.

I mean, I don't care about this 30 minute draft, but only I managed to get this kind of response 2 times here.

>>
>>70253466
What synth is it? Manuals tell you what the knobs do but it rarely tells you how they interact.

Like for example, if you make OSC 1 a saw and OSC 2 an inverted saw you saw-PWM. Or if you have a filter with the resonance cranked up, you change how the resonance sounds by turning down the oscillators volume then obviously turning up the master volume to compensate.

If you're not feeling imaginative, synths can seem like boring pulse wave generators. If you actually start thinking about what you want to hear and start tweaking you can achieve stuff you didn't think the synth could do.

I like to watch this guys synth demos to remind me what synths are capable of.

>>
>>70256638

I understand racks and other hardware (I own some myself) but I see ADAT as a speshul snowflake thing. I don't see why would anyone use it over any DAW. I mean unless you actually like it and are so used to it, that it would affect your workflow to switch to a DAW. But if you're fucking around and don't feel attached to it, get rid of that shit

does anyone know how i can send a track recorded on reaper through my mixer's aux sends?

I'm using an alesis firewire 8 and can't figure out how to map it to that output. I've tried a few different configurations, but all it does is isolate it to either the master out or control out instead of Aux A or B.

There's an option for choosing which output it uses, but nothing for the aux/FX loop, and I can't find it in the alesis settings, either.

What do I do? I'm trying to transition from recording on tape to using a computer and really want to use hardware effects since I can manually manipulate them.

Basically what I want to do is record a clean track, send it through the aux, and then apply effects that way instead of being forced to record a bunch of different tracks for each type of texture I want. It's easy on tape, why is it so difficult on computer?

I have an idea for how to avoid latency, though, so I guess that's a plus.

The aux sends on that mixer (Multimix 8 Firewire?) belong only to the mixer's analogue signal paths, they don't appear as either inputs or outputs in your DAW.

The Multimix 8 can send any or all of its 8 channels plus the stereo mix bus to your DAW so your DAW will see a total of 10 inputs that it can record from, but the return from the DAW back to the mixer only numbers two (usually the L and R mix outputs from the DAW's mixer).

The way that these DAW outputs are wired to the mixer are kinda like a 2-track return, so because they don't route through any of the channel strips you don't have the opportunity to route them through the aux sends either at that stage.

whats a decent budget midi controller with non shitty key action? SOz if this is a common question, but I have no idea of the durability of any of these low end models. Been looking at the Roland A49 anyone got any experience with them?
>>
>>70259813
>should I just use the main L R outputs as pseudo Aux sends?

If you're meaning to use the mixer's L/R outputs like this you'd need to be careful about what you're using as a return, since audio coming into that return (either an effect return or a channel strip) will then also play through the mixer's outputs, leading to a feedback loop.

If the return is a channel strip and you pan it hard right you'd be ok, since in your proposed setup that's the channel you're monitoring on but none of the effected signal is being sent back to the effect again.

I'm new to bass. Are you not supposed to play a second note while another is still ringing? If I do I get weird interference like in the clyp. Should I be muting the first note before I play another on a different string?
>>
>>70260769
the lower you go in the register, the more intervals you need between your notes if you intend to play chords

If you played the same two or three octaves up, you wouldnt have the same problem.

Probably got something to do with wavelengths and harmonics, someone more qualified than me can probably explain this.

Chords in a low register rarely amount to anything but shit.

My friend was telling me that my kick was weak in the mix so I kinda went crazy with limiting and eq on it. But I agree, I think a more toned down kick gives a more relaxing vibe, right now with how it's EQ'd sounds like a banger, and that's not what I'm going for.

Also that album is excellent, love autechre.
>>
>>70261174
there's frequencies in the hi hat and snare that are migraine inducing-tier and the reverb is too much/too bright

try using lo and hi-pass filters on the reverb send (you should be using effects like delay/reverb on sends so you can eq them seperately) or using a different reverb algorithm. I don't if that's a plate verb you're already using but thats what you generally use for snares but you dont have to
>>

I believe the technical term is "phase cancellation/harmonic beating"

intentionally replicating this phenomena with pure saw waves is called a reese bass, but you can do it with anything

but yeah if you don't want that effect you should only play one note at a time, or space out the notes by an octave or two
>>
>>70261484
phase cancelation would explain it since low wavelengths are more prone to phase cancelation due to the long wavelenghts.

I've got a question about this:

"These are the strongest chord movements in order of strength

Upward perfect 4th, downward perfect 5th (hence the circle of fifths being such a great tool)
Downward perfect 4th, upward perfect 5th.
Upward second.
Downward third.
Downward second.
Upward third."

I the key of C, starting from the root note.

Upward perfect 4th, downward perfect 5th C->F
Downward perfect 4th, upward perfect 5th. C->G
Upward second. C->?
Downward third. C->?
Downward second.C->?
Upward third. C->?

How do I extrapolate this if I start from other note than the tonic? Just transpose by semitones?
>>
>>70269114
I've had the same problem, the best way to solve it I think is to play a steady sound through both channels (the same sound in both) and look at a high resolution meter in the DAW and adjust the knobs until both channels are equal.
>>
>>70271282

Learn your intervals. If we are going by C major scale, which we most likely are, then major second up would be D, minor second down would be B, minor third down would be A, major third up would be E. But obviously you could go down a major third, up a minor second, etc.

The dude is most likely talking about major seconds and thirds. (Ie., Cm-Bb, C-Dm, Cm-Eb, C-Am, or the like).

You always think about your current chord as resolving to the next if possible. For instance, Dm-G7-C is a classic, since D is the fifth of G and G is the fifth of C. Similarly you could do Em-Am-Dm-G7-C. Though you might want to have an A7 for stronger movement towards Dm (and essentially having two ii-V-Is).
>>
>>70271492

I am sorry, minor thirds. Though majors would be alright as well (C-Em, Cm-Ab). Minor second movements tend to sound awkward if not voice lead properly.
>>
>>70269114
so then turn them to roughly the same position and just turn up/down one of the files if it doesnt come out right
>>
>>70271282
Seems like kind of a vague description of chord progressions.

As far as the first one goes
>Upward perfect 4th, downward perfect 5th (hence the circle of fifths being such a great tool)

I think what they're talking about is a ii V I, since if you go around the Circle of Fifths backwards, you get ii V I progressions.

I.e. in the key of C, you get D minor, G min 7, C maj 7.

This would correspond to up 4, down 5. Starting on D, you go up 4 to G and then down 5 to C. It's not a very good way of describing it though.

You can see why I said it was vague, their description has nothing about what key it's in, what types of chords to use, etc.

>>
Fucking hell, why does ableton have to make it so hard to get all of my plugins working??

Some synths got installed on various disks and in FL studio it's enough to point to all the folders I want scanned, but in ableton, everything has to be in a single folder and now I don't know how to move all the shit in the same place.
>>
>>70271167
ye but it's the closest alternative if you can't seed 24/7

>>70271924
make shortcuts of the .dll's in one folder
>>
>>70271755

It does correspond in a way, but the C-Am goes up a major sixth, not down a minor third.

If you want to go through all the chords within a single scale you will have to learn to voice lead. Pounding out root position chords will not sound very smooth, though that might be the desired effect.

Get Aldwell-Schachter's Harmony and Voice Leading.

Also, do you mean you want to keep your song in the C major or you want a similar chart for D major, E major, etc? Because the latter is obviously just transposing (B7-E in E major is the same, harmonically, as G7-C in C major).

I repair old gear sometimes. Honestly it isn't even math that you need to know, it's just finding service manuals and learning basic troubleshooting/diagnostics. Having an understanding of what each component does on a physical level is definitely a must, but aside from that everything is pretty easy. Just play detective, find the part that's acting up, replace it with a new one or one stripped from something else. Really doesn't take a deep level of knowledge at all. I'd recommend buying a few DIY synth kits to brush up on soldering and to learn a bit about what traditionally goes where, but aside from that it's mostly time and intuition.

Shure SM58 + Shure X2u XLR-to-USB Signal Adaptor
???

Is this the best way to connect a Shure SM58 to my computer?

An audio interface is the best way

Suggest me some nice hardware synthesizers that allow me to hold multiple notes and is $300-$700.

So far the only one I like is the Korg Minilogue, what's your opinions on it?
>>
https://clyp.it/ncvvo0ni

what do you guys think of my little movie theme thing?
>>
>>70282367
I really dig the piano parts. thought the hats/snare were mixed a little too in front of the pianos though, maybe that's just personal preference though. once the bass comes in it ends up sounding good anyway. this shit sounds smooth
>>
>>70284048
Thanks for the feedback. Do they sound too much through the whole song or just in the beginning where the bass isn't included?

The song works but you're barely using the full range of frequencies and timbres. I can't really hear a low end and all the sounds you are using are very round. I do believe in preserving dynamic range but I would use more compression if I were you. Try using sounds that are recorded or more processed to get a wider timbre. That's just my personal taste but you need to add detail to sound even if it makes the sound dirtier and harder to control
>>
>>70284383
I kind of understand what your saying but I'm so new I'm barely hanging on.

So more prominent low sound like a sub, more variety in the wave styles and more compression?
Is there a link or guide to compressing during mixing?
>>
>>70282367
Really well written song. The piano line is nice and the overall atmosphere is cool. The drums bore me to death tho. The drum sounds are bland it all sounds overly-quantised and rigid.
>>
>>70274751
I think the large majority of electronic music, whether it's EDM or experimental beat stuff or whatever is all produced collaboratively.

Apparently Major Lazer is essentially just a huge collective of producers working in LA that all add shit to the songs. Flylo works heaps with other producers as well.
>>
I been producing for over 4 years now and still to this date have never found a truly great source for acapellas.

Surely someone has a mega/dropbox link to some mother load of acapellas that I can pillage.
>>
>>70284153
sorry, I was working on something and got distracted. Mostly just before the bass comes in, that's the area when I thought it was a problem. it sounds good when the bass comes in though

i like this, it gives me feelings of anticipation. lmk if you do some more with it, will be keen to hear

>>70256440
i feel like it meanders a bit since there's little melody and the kick is p relentless, but otherwise it's really cool. maybe try putting the beat into half-time for one of the sections?

>>70259945
i like this how it is desu. reminds me of the airier side of vaporwave. you could try just putting single drum hits with some delay on them or something if you really think it needs some rhythm
>>
any good so far or nah
https://clyp.it/tj5anhn5

>>70282367
relaxing and nice
make the drums a little more punchy imo
>>70256440
kick is overpowering mix too much
hard 2 tell whats underneath
i like the stuff that goes on around 1:19 though, it's very dreamy

what is the best sound design you've heard

Call me pleb, but Kevin Parker is really good at sound design.

There was an episode of season two maybe the first or second of The Affair which has this very subtle morphing swirling of different tones. Don't know how the guy did that.
>>
>>70287170

is that show any good?
>>
>>70286850
last noisia album
>>
>>70287288
Hm I enjoyed it, but perhaps you have to be older. It feels like its written by women, kind of a high end soap / romance, but the main guy from the wire is pretty good. And the music and cinematography is nice, filmic.
>>
>>70287164
What? That synth at the beginning of Nangs is cool but that's about it.

He is a phenomenal producer tho.
>>
>>70257166
>damn this is real nice. what is that synth playing that main backing melody
The one that's playing through out pretty much the entire song or the one that comes in around 0:55? The one that's playing through out the whole song is the SQ8L preset "Nice Lead" but it has a shit load of external effects but the most prominent one is Ohmicide (multiband distortion plugin).

Huge archive, you can search by artist. You do need to make an account but it's worth it

Jesus, I have yet to find a secret formula for making a simple pop song sound good and interesting instead of dull and too loopy. It doesn't feel right when I just add and remove certain elements through the track, while bass and drums are playing the constant same 4-bars through the whole song.

Then I ask myself why am I even trying to do that. I guess because it's what people listen to. I can't go full Bach all the time.
>>
Unrelated but I own one of these >>70269114 but have never used it, not even sure what it's for, I'm just a noob producer who does everything on laptop. What should I buy to make use of this thing? Leads? Microphone? etc

Bump

Is there a female with a microphone here that could do me a 2 second favor?

As a beginner producer how do you feel about spending money? For example, can I justify spending a few hundred bucks on a pair of monitors if I'm not making any money off of my music? Or should I think of it the other way around, that I will be gimping my progress/making worse music/forming bad habits if I keep on working with headphones only?

nice, cassius vibes all over.
don't worry about sampling when u make french house, it's more than okay to loop some old disco tunes. go crazy on the filter and sidechain the fuck outta those kicks.

Why are there so little singers/rappers on /prod/?
Gave my first try at rapping after having produced for years. It's trash and I'm honestly ashamed to post it, but I need some real feedback

https://clyp.it/tknzncg4
>>
>>70289549
Sure. What are you thinking?
>>
>>70289566
>can I justify spending a few hundred bucks on a pair of monitors if I'm not making any money off of my music

You can use those monitors for music listening too

Might as well never invest into any hobby with that reasoning
>>
Best "free" EQ plugin?
>>
>>70289566
>>70289646
Yes you should do anything to get good monitors. Think of it as, you already have laptop and interface, you must be able to afford 700-1000 dollar monitors somehow. Don't drink or do weed for a month, suck cocks.

>>70289907
Need a producer tag. Just need you to record yourself saying "black lipstick", preferably on beat (doesn't matter the tempo). Could you kind whisper it but not really at the same time? Thanks a ton.

it's not perfect but it's not awful
just record a bunch of takes over and over until it turns out best
>>
Which is better, Prophet 6 or OB6?
>>
>>70290475
Also, would it be better to get a new VCO poly or a refurbished old one? Is the DSI sound inferior to say, an OB-X or is the difference not enough to justify getting something that will probably break down easier?
>>
>>70290556
>>70290475
it really depends on how you want to use it and the sound you are going after. I've played around with both at my local shop, they are both great synths. ob6 might be more of a lead machine, and prophet 6 may be better all around.

check out these vintage ones, they in the same realm...

Juno 60 (or 106 for midi), great all around, good arpegiator
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AHjFCEBaZaE

Jupiter 6, probably not best as a main but can really cut thru when needed

new bread?

yes

>>70291262
I tried the prophet 08 and it sounded a 'fizzy' which is good for a lot of sounds but I was wondering if the prophet 6 would be capable of mellow pads because it had a recreation of the P5 rev1/2 VCF chips.

Have you heard anyone call it plasticky or anything like that?
