I slept on this shit when it came out, but I fucking love it.
> quite twinklecore guitars with pretty harmonics
> simple see through honest lyrics with recursive themes
> dynamic singing with stripped back harmonic dubs ( sometimes sound choral, complimenting religious themes)
> plus she's a qt
what did you think /mu/?

*Yawn* Elliott Smith is dead move on

I liked this album, but it doesn't seem to have anything special going on so it's easy to miss it. There's so many albums like this nowadays that it's easy to get lost in the shuffle, and she won't make it if she doesn't do anything more interesting on her next album

She looks like someone I lived with in college.
His name was Caleb.

boring as hell, there are nine million singer-songwriters with more interesting music than julien baker
Her voice is so painfully forgettable it kills me bc she seems quite cool
the album is aural nyquil

same, man.
i was pretty dismissive of it when i first saw it, but the genuineness got to me
also i got an /lgbt/ banner lol
yeah, I slept on it, too
it's not generally the kind of thing I'm into (I tend to go for more over-produced things with synths and string sections and weird noises and shit), and I'm usually pretty dismissive of anything twee or "indie" or "honest" or folky or "bare."
Something about her imagery, though, like the obvious "a marathon runner, my ankles are sprained." It's very communicative. Like yeah, I get that.
And the way she sings it is very emotive; you can hear her little voice breaking while she conveys this powerful image of brokenness.
Still not my favorite genre at all, but it succeeds in making me feel something which is more than I can say for pretty much anything else in the same style.

It's because of the ubiquitous pseudo black soul diva voice. The majority of new and upcoming female singer-songwiters have a voice that's in the realm of a black soul diva.
"why did you let them leave and then make me stay?"

I've listened to this album so much which surprised me. I know essentially all the lyrics and can almost sing the entire album by heart without even having it playing. Why do I like it so much even though it obviously does nothing new?
