There's a severe lack of DAW descriptions in the wiki. If you're good with your tool of choice, consider writing a paragraph about it.

This is the intro and first verse to my hip hop-ish beat. There's current no mastering done, save for some volume adjustments. What would you suggest needs to be done to the track to make it a bit nicer? This is the first thing I've made which I'm legitimately happy with so far.

My flanger's eating the organ. I mean, it makes sense such a clear sound would get fucked up by a comb filter so...this just plain won't work, will it? I tried compressing it, but eh.
Wasn't really going for a rotary sound btw.

>>70198911
What does he do?
>>70200376
I'd tone the reverb way down on the first one.
I like the second one much better. I think the heavy stereo shit is a bit distracting and it's jarring when it goes out for a while.
The lead could be louder. The modulation's cool, but the way you bend the bass just feels like it's gone out of tune.
>>
>>70200378
Basically I need an idea for some slow modulation I could do over this bit.

Isn't it about time we give up on the DAW descriptions in the wiki?
No one's doing it.
It's not even a funny maymay.

depends on the drum and the context
sometimes I like some lows on my snares and give them a bump in the fundamental region which can be as low as 80ish Hz if it's tuned really low
but especially if there's spill from the kick that shit has to go

Have you read the manual first? Go into templates in the presets and it will show you pic related.

Alpha = Alpha Juno
June-60 = Juno 60
Jupe-6 = Jupiter 6
Jupe-8 = Jupiter 8
Minimono = Minimoog Model D
MS-Rev1/2 = MS-20 Rev 1/2

Start with one of those templates and search youtube for explanations of those synths. The MS-20 because they hardware does modulations with a patchbay but the software modulators uses a drop-down menu but you can still do most of the same stuff.

introduce some other elements. the piano gets old quick especially since the melody is very short
>>
>>70201727
Yeah, I guess the problem with showing the version without the vocals does reveal repetition in the melody. The main focus of the song is the lyrics during those parts so the repetition is less noticable, but I do want to add more variation to the melodies of both verses. Right now it's just an issue of finding stuff that works since I basically have no VSTs and just fuck around with whatever comes with FL Studio torrented lol
>>
>>70201757
fair enough!

i use stock fl studio as well. sytrus is really easy to use, you can make any fm sounds you can dream of and you can also use it as an additive synth. so basically any synth sounds you hear in modern pop or hip hop. harmor is really cool as well, you can drag audio clips into it and use it as a sampler sort of and make interesting textures / pads / ambient sounds. i'm not a pro though so im sure theres a thousand more ways to come up with interesting sound design techniques in stock fl

How so?
>>
>>70200444
>>70201959
Not that guy but I've been watching the masterclass too.

90% of time he is trying to figure out something that works. He can hear what sounds good and what doesn't, but it's just a really slow hit and miss process for him. He said multiple times he would rather just play it on a keyboard, but never explains why he just doesn't learn it already.

Basically, sliding the notes one by one on a piano roll until it "sounds right" is his process. He can't hear anything in his head before that.

I like the guy and some of his music, anyway. I didn't learn much from his masterclass for now (maybe went through 25% of it though), but it's nice to listen to stuff he says, it's more like a psychological thing for me - to motivate me a bit.

Only thing it made me realize is that I should really give a 15th chance to Ableton and learn it. Seeing him working in it is comfy as fuck compared to FL. And a part where he said that people stick to one DAW just because they know it the best and don't want to change resonates with me. I started with FL, but after I got a free license I especially feel the need to keep using it, even though the workflow is kinda annoying. I like it's design the most, but Ableton just makes everything easier and that's what matters in the end.

Really hope they will redesign ableton one day, though.
>>
>>70201902
Haha, yeah, it's that eastern sound, don't know how familiar you are with that kind of music to get that association. Everything is fine, as long as the music is good, though. I guess I'll work on a second one more.

synthesiser noob here

i've been using massive for a few years but never really understood what things do. i just mess around with presets until i get a sound that i like

the thing i like about massive is it's variety and how you can (pretty much) make any sound you need from it.

can i do the same thing with 3xosc? i plan on learning a synth inside out so i can improve my knowledge of synthesisers and hopefully better my production.

thanks in advance

>>
>>70203161
Go through the manuals and try to understand everything. You can do some crazy shit with 3xosc as well but overall it's different than Massive.

Let me give you an example of how you can make crazy shit with 3xosc. you can load your own waveforms in there and if you load up a huge fuckin waveform it sounds like the weirdest thing you've ever heard.

>>70203190
that's not true, you can load your own waveforms in 3xosc

>>70203726
/prod/ and /comp/ should be the same thing, besides, /comp/ is almost always dead

>>70203911
I can't tell if that 16th note thing is an arp or a percussion thing with some weird tonality, either way it sounds a bit off and distracts from the whole composition. Speaking of the composition, sounds flat and uninspired, however sounds like you've not been doing this for a long time so it's good if you're a beginner.

I'd learn massive if I were you, and if you really want to get to know it always start with an empty patch, not a preset. IIRC there's a pretty good router overview so you can see how all the components are linked together, shouldn't be that hard to learn that way.

Is it any good? It's renoise as a plugin in your DAW. I have hardly any experience with trackers but always loved the way Renoise looked. I made a few songs on it like 10 years ago and it was really fun.
>>
>>70223894
The SP-404 mic input HAS a preamp. Caribou recorded vocals on Swim or Andorra with it, can't remember which album.
>>

That's what happens if you don't fully learn a piece of gear and keep switching between different gear. You need to learn one piece like the back of your hand, then move onto another or you will be slowed every time you have to search the manual to figure out how to do something.

Which plugins have the most up-to-date analog modelling tech for:

- EQ
- Compression
- Analog Delay
- Saturation/Distortion

?

Like Waves sells SSL vst effects that they market as analog-modelling but they're from the early 2000s, some are even from the 90s so they can't be as good as more recent algos right?
>>
Can someone using S1 v3 try out http://jsplugins.supermaailma.net/plugins.php

The bass professor plugins? I'm trying to get them running but S1 doesn't seem to detect it in my plugins folder. I just copied and pasted the x64 files after unzipping it. Let me know if I'm doing something obviously wrong or stupid. There's no installer so I assume it's just copy/paste.

>>
>>70227559
Slate or UAD. I find Slate stuff boring though. Haven't tried UAD long enough to form an opinion. PSP make some fun analogue style plugins.

Waves are still pretty good. Prefer other developers though.

>>70227597
Yep. The link is safe, the Reaper blog links there, etc. Just a dude who writes plugins in his spare time or something. Google Stige T Bass Professor. I understand if you don't want to try it though.

>>70227729
It's good but save the money. You can get great mixes with cheap plugins. Valhalla, Klanghelm, SKnote, Hornet, there's lots of developers with great plugins for low prices. Even Soundtoys have regular sales on their bundle.
>>
I finished pirating the Komplete Ultimate collection to pair with my also pirated copy of Maschine and I have everything working but the Reaktor based softsynths. Everytime I try to load an instrument from Monark or Prism, I keep getting a "Could not load 1 or more plugins" error. When I try to load an effect, I get an "The settings were saved with a more recent version of Reaktor" error. I tried downloading Reaktor 6 separately, but maschine doesn't recognize it, I presume since it doesn't require an install to work. Has anyone else had my extremely specific issue too?
>>
>>70227896
All these plugin choices confound me. I'm still not able to judge the 'tone' of a compressor or an EQ. What I've found so far is the Waves LA-2A emulation seems to smooth stuff very well, the API-2500 makes a nice smashy sound and the SSL comp makes stuff sound like a record on the stereo buss if you use in subtle fashion.

I understand the controls of compressors and know about the qualities of certain frequency ranges but I don't know why people gush over certain hardware models and their emulations and always go on about tone.
>>
>>70228712
It's pretty subtle, it's not like the tone you would get from using different guitar amps or something, it's more like a 1% or 5% difference usually. Just use a regular comp and eq, it doesn't really matter. Then if you want saturation, use a saturator.

my default template is:
- MS-20/CS-5/Prophet 08 audio tracks
- Kontakt group with 4 mono out, 9 stereo and 2 aux
- Cyclone (TX-16w emu) for gritty lo fi sampling but takes longer. World's best bitcrusher.
- Diva for analog polysynth
- Repro-1 for analog monosynth
- Arturia Synclavier for additive synth
- Arturia Prophet VS for wavetable
- Reason PX7 for FM

and sends are
A - Echoboy delay
B - NI RC-24 or 48 reverb
C - Altiverb with small space impulse
D - Soundtoys microshift for chorus

The sends are all subtle/transparent effects that can be used on lots of different things without tweaking, good enough for a rough draft.

Muse Research Receptor is the established standard for this - bear in mind that it's hideously expensive and that there's no real secret to its hardware, in that it's just a computer with a stripped back OS that hosts VSTs.

For my older live sets (when I needed to save CPU on the basic laptop I had) I built a PC into a rack-mounted server case, connected to the laptop via Ethernet and running FX Teleport - this will run the VST of your choice on the remote computer but you instantiate it via your usual route, the only difference being that you'd choose to load a "teleported" version of your VST that is really just a wrapper that gets installed when you install FX Teleport.

not at all
studio standard large dias like the typical neumanns are versatile as fuck, even though you mostly see them being used for vocals in pop music
budget large dias aren't versatile at all since they're mostly voiced for vocals, that's what people expect them to do
check out how orchestras or smaller classical ensembles, drum overheads, guitars and almost everything else acoustic is recorded: you'll see loads of the bread and butter standard small dia condensers like dpas, neumann 184s, shure ksm137, that stuff screams versatility and neutrality and is acually MUCH easier to place for stereo recording because of weight and size
the rode nt5 line up with that pretty well for the price

Start remaking other people's songs for a bit... or try using another song you like as a template for your song, a/b yours against thiers in 16 measure segments. Try to mimic what the other song does but your own way.

Not that anon but this sounds like a good template, mine is similar.

Do you keep any of your sends set to pre?

God dammit this is like the 3rd time someone has told me my synths sound like presets. I need to get better.

Rate this piano bit I'm working on for a new song

https://clyp.it/10sf4gbu

excuse the jankyness, I'm kinda drunk and I've done like 30 takes and my shitty keyboard or my shitty falling-apart sustain pedal kept on fucking them up and so I just went "fuck it" on this take and recorded through the mistakes and gave up at the end. I'm sure you can tell but I think you all can get the gist of it

I don't know if it's because I've done so many takes or what but it seems like it might be a bit too repetitive
