What's going on with /blindfold/ edition

Been missing them over the Christmas Holidays and saw on the archive that this week's didn't get the reveals posted. Might post if there's another thread but it seems like this weeks got really poor turnout. Where have all the other regulars gone?

Also, what's everyone been listening to? What'd you think? etc.

Bumping
Been loving pic related recently. Jarrett stuff usually requires more energy and time to enjoy than I have but I got around to properly listening to a few of his albums over the Christmas which was nice and I hadn't heard this one before. That boogie woogie bit in the Bremen concert was a pretty genius way to direct the composition. He developed into it really well and it was interesting to get all those modern jazz and classical influences in tandem with simple oldtimey walking lines.

this is a great set, try hymns spheres if you havent already. He does some crazy things on the organ

Meh, tbf, most of them do. There was a spell of them a while back that were nearing bump limit but it seems to have died down a little again. Who know though! Hope this is around for a while though. At least long enough for blindfold guy or jtg to see it.
>>70194388
I've had that one downloaded for ages. I really should get to it soonish.
I imagine Keith probably does a good job with it but I normally hate organs in jazz. That's mostly cause I've heard it used in a lot of sub-par hard bop blowing sessions, but still. It's a lot better used in art music.
>>
>>70195039
yeah it took me a few tries to truly enjoy it, but it feels a bit different being that it's just solo organ, some parts just sound like a keyboard or a synthesizer. kinda hard to explain but it's one of my favorites of his

Anyone check out pic yet? Jan Bang's sampling of what everyone else is playing is like taking the kind of "conductor" style stuff Zappa was doing but to the next level. Kinda weirdly reminds me of Mingus in a way because of how good a bandleader he was back in his day in terms of how he guided his musicians to create these cool textures. But here that's being done through sampling rather than old school style bandleading skills.

>>70194916
Pic of course.

>>70194974
To some of the musicians the term comes with a lot of other hidden meanings and a general sense of condescension. Read this article if you haven't yet.

Wanna contribute to the topic in a way that doesn't involve you or Herbie? It's obvious you don't know about jazz that isn't Herbie, so maybe check out more stuff?
>>
>>70196217
I've been trying to listen to more Miles.
I know Bitches Brew and Water Babies.

Where to next?
>>
>>70196417
On The Corner

Jazz-Funk similar to Herbie's jazz funk stuff (came out a year before Headhunters) but with a tinge of stuff ranging from Indian music to Stockhausen style electronics. Also Herbie's on that record as well.

Either way I would recommend everything from In A Silent Way till Water Babies in terms of LP releases (his "electric" era.) All of it except Bitches Brew has Herbie on piano.

I've been getting deep into some Mingus lately, listening to this and The Great Concert this week. He is incredible, probably the best bassist I've ever heard, and it's great to hear Dolphy at his A-game too.

I have done. I like the (underrated) Blue Mitchell/Junior Cook lineup (see also: Doin' the Thing) but Horace and Joe Henderson make such an amazing team.

Does \mu\ nurture any love towards Makaya McCraven? This album is amazing.
Also, John di Martino's Romantic Jazz Trio. Hot stuff. Listen to Chopin Jazz if you haven't already, it's exactly what you think: jazz covers of Chopin.

This. Only major thing wrong with Herbieanon's chart. He did some of his best work on other people's albums.
>>
>>70201535
You'd probs be better off looking into modern chanson singers like Edith Piaf than jazz.
>>
How do y'all tell trumpet players apart? I feel like I can hear so much more expressive range between different sax players than between two trumpet players. Take an album like Night of the Cookers with Hubbard & Morgan. I sometimes have trouble noticing when one soloist has stopped and the other has started, let alone telling who's who. What should I be listening for?
>>
>>70201610
seeing him live in a week - should be interesting

>>
>>70203226
Oh, kk misunderstood what was appealing to you.
Welp, that sort of style of trombone playing where you're messing around with timbre and phrasing using mutes was pioneered by Sam Nanton with the Ellington orchestra. Bunch of other more modern players do similar stuff but this is probably the sort of thing you're looking for.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qDQpZT3GhDg&ab_channel=bretodeau
Far as where to get the get the early Ellington stuff, there's a 4cd set called "masterpieces 1926-49" that's got a really good collection of Duke's pre-album stuff.
>>
>>70204189
thanks for the rec!
I've only listened to "ellington uptown" but it's too dissonant for my taste

this sounds great! gonna get that collection.

guys, please help, the brutes on /share/ are useless.

i'm looking for a specific type of jazz.

the kind that has soft rhodes and bells

what kind of jazz is that?

have any album recs?

Like Pharoah Sanders' Astral Travelling or something?

potential track that represents the kind of jazz that has Rhodes and bells (rest of the album is funkier jazz-rock though)

>>
>>70205601
exactly like this. was aware of this one though.
i would prefer something more obscure.

>>70205665
this is exactly the type of shit im looking for shit

more like this?
>>
>>70205825
well, off the top of my head, if you don't know Lonnie Liston Smith's Astral Travelling album you need to check it out - very similar to Pharaoh's Thembi where Smith plays piano/Rhodes, but kind of underappreciated, I'd say. Not all Rhodes, but the vibe is similar.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r9wt2DvqMgw

Edward Vesala's (who plays percussion on that Koivistoinen track) Nan Madol also has some similar vibes (no Rhodes or piano)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0ZFnIZQto0g

in general i guess you'd be looking for spiritual jazz with Rhodes - although I'd say it's uncommon to find an entire album in this style.

Someone attempted to establish the name "kozmigroov" for music that this kind of stuff could easily fall under, so you can do some digging here:

I just made a Miles post in this thread:

>>70166093
>>
>>70196417
In a Silent Way, Filles de Kilimanjaro, Nefertiti

then try to get into the rest of the second great quintet stuff - E.S.P, Miles Smiles, Sorcerer, Miles in the Sky

worked for me when I got into Miles starting with Bitches Brew
>>
>>70205584
I don't think that makes much of a difference in the end. The chart is still a good sampler of his studio albums.
