the thing that gets me the most is whats the point, this is basically just a board to either meme about music or find new music. i absolutely hate that there are people out there that "rate" music?? you are born with a music taste thats your own

>>
>>70174405
I feel it, but at the same time could you turn around and say the same about Films or Television Series? I dont think so. It's like letting people know what you thought of the Film, or in this case, an artist or album, in the easiest, and simplest of ways. I do get what you're saying though.
>>
>>70174352
I'm bitter that the endless cycle of newfags ruin 4chan, yeah.
>>70174361
It's still one of the better ones as of very recently. The whole "our board is the worst on 4chan" is a meme that is only spouted by 1-2 year fags who think they've seen everything and newfags trying to fit in. Also really, REALLY irrationally angry oldfags I guess. /mu/ has been ridiculously bad, and it's been not bad. Every board on 4chan is bad, when you're talking about whether a board is good, you have to compare it to the other boards of somewhat equal size, and /mu/ stacks up pretty good compared to those other boards at this moment. 2014 /mu/ was peak trash, it's been uphill since then.
>>
>>70174428
I believe in ABBA.
>>
>>70174334
You just find people who literally tell you that they're new? Genius.
>>
>>70174405
If you're talking about rym, I use it to catalogue what I think about music, all my ratings are entirely personally and 0% objective. I'm pretty sure that's what most people do too, it's just that the people who try to put off their ratings as objective are loud and very obnoxious and cancerous.
>>
>>70174435
My son, today is the first day I've ever posted on 4Chan and I can tell you it was ruined long before I reared my ugly head here. Do better my child. Do better.
>>
>>70174476
Well, welcome. Have you just been a multi-board lurker?
>>
>>70174501
I've browsed around a bit here and there but I saw someone posting about ABBA and couldnt resist popping my cherry.
>>
>>70174476
I'm a 2007fag, it was ruined when fox news made the news report on it. Whether that was before you or not I don't know, but that's the origin of cancer.
>>
I think there's no coincidence in the fact that /mu/ being one of the worst boards coincides with it being one of the most underage boards too.
>>
>>70174514

ABBA is far better than anyone gives them credit for nowadays. They took the world by storm, quite a feat for anyone, but amazing for a band from a non-English speaking country. They have so many quality songs because of Benny and Björn, you could listen for days on end and never hear a chord or melody you didn't like.
>>
>>70174544
I think the internet will be the downfall of society. I'm not saying that to be an edgelord, it's just so foreign to our animal brains that I don't think there is any way a society can remain healthy while evolving with the internet. Yet here I am shitposting on a balinese gamelan music forum.

>>
>>70174587
I feel it. I could say that about a lot of bands, minus the "Taking the world by storm," bit because most of the shit I listen to have like 4 fans worldwide lmao.
>>
>>70174539
Definitely and you can see how detrimental that is to the quality of a place
>>
Can somebody explain the ABBA memery to me?
>>
>>70174544
I don't even disagree, I just think that's sort of a useless label. At that point, why even care what's cancer in the first place, if literally all of it is cancer?
>>
>>70174611
I feel. I used to search for super obscure bands, and sort of ironically like a few, but ever since I've started becoming truly educated in music (like college educated, not /mu/ educated) I've started appreciating so much music, but stuff old me would've never even thought to listen for.
>>
>>70174607
I think it's either going to be the downfall of society, or the thing that pushes us so far into technological advancement that we end up like the people in the Matrix, literally plugged in and living a life inside a virtual reality. But if you read into the Simulation Theory, that might already be so.
>>
>>70174615
It's just one guy (me) shitposting about ABBA. No meme behind it, don't fret.
>>
>>70174620
Because the thing that our society is ultimately dependent on today is a tumor, metastasizing its way into every aspect of life. And were helpless to stop it because we can't live without it.

if I went back even 5 years (I just turned 26 3 days ago), I reckon about 80% of what I listen to now, wouldnt have appealed to me back then, I had to discover Red Fang to branch out of my angsty teenage grunge phase, and I fell face first into Stoner/Sludge/Doom/Drone

>>
>>70174664
The evolution of music in my life is much slower than I think others are. I can listen to one band for years and years, and always listen to them when I want to again, and never get tired of them. But those are some obscure genres. What got you to liking that sort of thing?
>>
>>70174648
I think you're making a really loaded and huge statement that would be very hard to prove. I agree that we have a very unstable society right now, but I think pinpointing specifically what it is is basically impossible without lots of assumptions at this point.
>>70174654

>>

If you dig the Simulation Theory idea, you'd love Westworld, that fucking show man. I'd always screamed about how Breaking Bad, Mad Men, and Game of Thrones were some of the best shows ever, but honestly Westworld tops them all, and it delves deep into the Simulation Theory in a very smart, subtle way.

Just because it's not obscure to you, doesnt mean it's not obscure to others. Most people outside the general Doom/Stoner Scene have no idea what the hell any of that shit is. Imagine showing someone who's listened to hair metal for 20 years SUNN O))), or Nurse With Wound, they'd be horrified.

>>
>>70174740
Most rec threads are just thinly veiled attempts at self validation. The narcissism of mainstream social media has seeped into all corners of the web.

Not really. /mu/ is kinda generic in its predilections, but occasionally has some fantastic recommendations for particular genres, if you ask for them.

Tbh if it wasn't for Sabbath, Metal wouldnt be as big as it is today, and Doom Metal specifically, probably wouldnt exist if it wasn't for Sabbath, Pentagram, and Saint Vitus.

I've spent the last 5 years of my life reading and researching this shit, Im actually working on about about the history of Doom Metal and the subgenres that branch off of it.

There's a ton to be honest, and even then it's hard to classify shit sometimes. There's bands like Baroness which I like to tell people are Progressive Melodic Southern Stoner Sludge Metal, and anyone who's ever listened to Baroness would be like, "yep, that's the band right there."
>>
>>70174781
fuckit

I enjoy ABBA i guess. I recall singing Dancing Queen at a karaoke fairly well once when i had no memory of actually sitting down and listening to it. I'm not white so i didn't grow up with it or anything which also means i'm not sick of hearing it in the least.

ABBA makes me want to be gay- that is how lively and flamboyant it makes me feel.

what do you recommend I listen to.
>>
>>70174838 The other 50 are me
>>
>>70174870
The difficulty of distinctly classifying music without being super vague is a problem I do share on my side of music.
>>
>>70174900
I feel you, but I think as you go back in time, in terms of music, it gets harder to classify things. Imagine all the different types of Jazz when Jazz was in it's heyday, yknow.
>>
>>70174838
At least 25 of them
>>
>>70174886
f u c k Y e s I v e d o n e I t

Well it is certainly not gay, it's two married couples singing and playing piano/guitar. The flamboyancy was in them not speaking English as a first language (so the English was very basic and easy), and the outfits, which they only did to get recognized on a larger scale at first, according to them.

Anyways, what's more your style, folk, rock, pop, or jazz/slow stuff?
>>
>>70174821
>Im actually working on about about the history of Doom Metal and the subgenres that branch off of it.
Is it a book or something?
>>70174840
Oh cool. You should post it in /metal/ when it's done. Actually no, that's an awful idea, just make a thread about it.
>>
>>70174786
oh rec threads? I been floating around like 7/8 years and I never go to those. It's usually when you make conversation that you find genuine people. Sharethreads are(were?) full of eccentrics with maturity and knowledge and it was fun.
>>
>>70174917
I feel. As people branch off and want to make their own with every genre there is, it would naturally become harder to bring it all together under a label.
>>
>>70174938
I would rather have someone read a list of my sins to me aloud in front of everyone I've ever known than post my Doom Metal History Book in /metal/ lmfao
>>
Abba poster here.

This thread started as hating this board.

However it has only grown my liking for this board.
>>
>>70174952
Exactly, that's why I call it the Doom Metal Spectrum, because you can go from Baroness, to Fu Manchu, Windhand, to Dark Castle, YOB, to Bongripper and still be inside the Doom Metal Spectrum, and all of these bands have pretty drastically different sounds.
>>
>>70174971
I would like to claim at least partial credit for this lmao
>>
>>70174971
it's generating actual conversation and less vague and empty image replies this is good actually
>>

>>70175026
I've been working on it for roughly a year, the problem is going further than just biographies about notable bands in the scene, the next logical step is actually trying to get commentary from bands in the scene, and that's actually going to be the hardest part because who the hell even reads their emails anymore lmao. I've emailed a few bands for input on the book and I haven't gotten any responses. Kinda sucks, but Im still hopeful I'll finish it one day. It's got one hell of a title, I'll tell you that.

I mean calling anything the worst in the history of music is a bit outlandish. I mean I clearly like ABBA so Tool obviously isn't something I'd be into, Kek.

That's really my only reason.
>>
>>70175236
But see that's better than saying, "I dont like a band because their fans are shit." I KNOW Tool fans are shit, but Im not worried about the fans, Im worried about getting my hands on a new album before I fucking die of old age lmao. But at the same time I give people who listen to like, Hair Metal and Thrash Metal the hardest time. I was involved with a girl a while back and when we first started talking, we were talking about Metal and she goes, "I love Metallica," to which I replied, "Ah, that's a shame."

It's just buttrock with polyrhythms and pretentious lyricism. Add some monotonous Jones guitar playing and suddenly it's a THINKIN' MANS BAND

That's how I feel now, like there's never going to be another Tool album, it's been over 10 years, closer to 11 since their last effort and im just dying because of it.

Truly, and I mean this with as much respect as possible, you have literally no fucking idea what you're talking about. Go and look at the Fibonacci In Lateralus and get back to me.

It is a truly detrimental thing. Mainly because the members divorced and weren't on speaking terms for quite some time. They're good now, just said they won't be doing music together besides accolade and award appearances, or anniversaries. But happily, Benny and Björn are still writing music and plays, so there's something to hand onto.
>>
>>70175356
Listen to SLEEP while you Guzzle and Chug, still works. Trust me. Listen to Dragonaut and get back to me, it's about 6 minutes long, or so.

I've seen that cover in at least 9 threads today.
>>
>>70175356
That's exactly how I feel as well, Tool's lead singer is the lead singer for A Perfect Circle, as well as having his own experimental music project called Puscifer, so at least there's something that's still out there. But Im not where near as into Puscifer or APC as I am Tool.

you're on fucking /mu/, what did you expect?

Clearly, ABBA.

>Go and look at the Fibonacci In Lateralus and get back to me.

I already knew about it bud, exactly the kind of pretentious shit I was referencing. Congratulations, they made a song with rhythms based on numbers in the fibonacci sequence. That really validates their music, right?

It's more than just the rhythm of the instruments, the syllable value of the lyrics sync up with Fibonacci Sequence. If you reorder the track numbers into a Fibonacci Sequence, each track flows perfectly into the next.

You know what's pretentious? Not recognizing and acknowledging art because you think you're somehow better than the people who do appreciate, recognize and acknowledge it you fucking hipster.

Go listen to Slayer.

I know, very disappointing. Google gives me nothing though. It's interesting that you like Tool and also FOB. I've been a fan for years, obviously. I just feel like their songcraft is a lot more complex and mature, it's a bit strange you still like Tool if you have moved on in taste like that. When did you start listening to Tool, are they a childhood favourite or?

Listen to Tool, Spiral Out, Keep Going.
>>
>>70175709
"Get it when Im older," Im probably older than you dude lmao. Maybe you'll get Tool when YOU'RE older.

My tastes are no where near Fall Out Boy, and Im damn proud to say that lmao. If it gets radio play, Im not going near it. Enjoy your mainstream garbage.
>>
I cant believe someone thought someone who listens to Tool would also listen to Fall Out Boy like what fucking Universe is this? Did German win WWII? Are we living in an Alternate Reality?

>>70175728
I listened to Tool when I was a teenager, I grew out of them. I think once you get past the whole "commercialism is inherently bad" phase (I had it too when I was a bit younger) you'll start to appreciate a wider variety of music that you clearly currently shun to look cool. That's understandable obviously, many people act like this when they're still getting to grips with their taste. Honestly though, once you're ready, give them a shot. You might surprise yourself, if you care enough to drop that ego of yours. Some people just can't do that though.

Dude I've listened to every big hit Fall Out Boy have ever had and I can say, definitively, it's nothing more than whiny angsty emo for the radio. It's no better than My Chemical Romance. I know what I like, and I have quite broad horizons contrary to your ill informed opinion. I dont shun them to look cool, I shun them because they're generic garbage. However, I may look cool while shunning them. I like how you're attempting to assert that somehow, Fall Out Boy are better musicians than Tool which is just Intellectually Dishonest and outright stupid.

Fall Out Boy are garbage pseudo rock for the outcast in high school who think's he's edgy because he has long hair and wears black clothes lmfao.

Im genuinely curious now, do you like, like Bring Me The Horizon and Pierce The Veil and shit too lmfao?

>>
>>70175834
I think you do shun them to look cool, despite what you say here. Your "if it gets radio play, I'm not going near it" comment was very telling. You can't possibly know what something will be like simply because it's popular - and yet you choose to shun it simply because it is popular. It's a very adolescent way to behave, and one you will hopefully grow out of.

Until that time comes you can't be trusted to have a legitimate opinion as it is so blatantly clouded by this ego of yours - this image of you as a subversive person who can't be seen to listen to commercial music purely on the basis that it is popular and successful. It's childish.

So like I said, when you're ready, and only when you're ready, give them another try.

Good luck dude.
>>
>>70175907
As I stated previously, they're generic mainstream garbage, and the fact you have to defend them so hard on fuckin 4chan of all places just proves how generic and shitty they are.

That old phrase, "Defend Pop Punk," Pop Punk wouldnt need defense if it wasn't fucking weak.

Like I said, I know what I like and none of it comes near the radios, and your assumptions based of a very limited interaction are nothing more than baseless claims you think you've discovered.

Enjoy your generic pop punk, I'll enjoy my metal subgenres.
>>
I would rather have someone pour sulfuric acid into my open eye than have to listen to Fall Out Boy ever again in my life.
>>
>>70175934
As I stated previously, that's an adolescent mindset you'll grow out of.

When you're ready to accept music for what it is rather than it's popularity and status, you'll have grown up a whole lot.

I can totally empathise. A lot of people here would be able to empathise. But I'm telling you, it's a phase you'll grow out of.

Good luck dude.
>>
>>70175981
Your pseudo-intellectual assessment is so far off the mark it's laughable. Keep your Generic Pop Punk, I'll listen to musicians that actually have talent and work for what they have, instead of selling out to the record companies for air time on the radio so kids in their teens can feel angsty.
>>
>>70175981
>Accept music for what it is
Angsty man-children whining about highschool and lost lovers? I'll pass.
>>
>>70175981
it's funny too because I love a lot of bands that could be grouped in with Fall Out Boy- Brand New, Bayside, Weezer, The Get Up Kids, The Hotelier, Alkaline Trio- the difference is these bands are musically light years ahead of anything Fall Out Boy could ever hope to achieve.

Look dude, I get it. I'm not expecting to make waves in your world - god knows I wouldn't have listened to me either back in the day.

I totally understand where you are coming from. You're listening to this cool band, they don't get airplay, and that's kinda sweet. You get this feeling that you know a little more about things than your average Joe, because hey, average Joe just listens to the radio like a sheep. I understand that sentiment.

But really, to grow up as a person you sort of have to accept that you're no better than anyone else. That you're flawed in as many ways as you can list that other people are flawed in too. It's something that a lot of people take a while to learn, but I can see you're not stupid.

It's whatever man. Enjoy what you enjoy for now. Things will change.
>>
>>70176149
It's more than just "this cool band that doesn't get air play" It's infinitely more than that, it's the quality of music, the meaning behind it, the feeling in it.

Im well aware that Im nothing more than an insignificant speck in the grand scheme of the cosmos. I enjoy tons of bands that got radio play out the wazoo in their heyday, pretty much any of the big 4 Grunge bands got tons of airplay int he day.

Things aren't going to change though, I've found my niche, it took nearly 30 years of searching but I found my niche and I enjoy what I enjoy, and I know exactly what I do enjoy. There's a 99% chance that I'll know if I'll enjoy a band or not just based off their name alone, Im just that kind of person.

Enjoy the weekend man.
