There's a severe lack of DAW descriptions in the wiki. If you're good with your tool of choice, consider writing a paragraph about it.

/prod/ IRC is up!
To join, you can go tohttp://www.rizon.net/chat
Choose a nick, put #/prod/ as channel. Enter!
Or you can get a lightweight desktop client herehttps://hexchat.github.io/downloads.html

Remember to use clyp.it to post your tracks/WIP: posting a clyp.it is just providing sound for a question, posting a Soundcloudlink is making self-advertisement and the thread doesn't need that.

Remember to check other peoples' clyp.it links to keep the thread healthy.

Just so you know, this is NOT true, and often you will be subject to stigma if other producers (in the professional environment) and engineers realise you are cracking software.

You must understand that you are literally stealing the money of the developer and that you are not helping "their" industry.

All the NFO's from release groups say at the end "If you like your developer, buy the software to support them". Its not just a meme it is the industry surviving.

- Make a 'production notes' notepad file and every time you're messing round with a synth, an effect, guitar + amp etc and you find something that sounds good, write down in the file what you used and keep adding to it every time you stumble upon something. Even if it's a far-out abstract thought you had on music just write it down.

- Set out days where all you do is sit down and make your own presets, or patch settings for hardware. Go back to old projects and you saved (I always add 'ok'/'good'/'goodgood' to the filename to set it out from the shit doodles) and find ones with interesting sounds that you can re-use. Save the synth patches and effect settings as seperate settings but also save the combined track (instrument and effects) into a container like ableton's instrument rack

By doing this you can save up a big bank of stuff tailored to your taste that you will definitely find more useful than stock presets.

For composing, try thinking of a melody or a riff or bassline etc and singing/humming it. Record it to an audio track. You could build up a song of you doing vocalizations and beatboxing and then just replace the lines with synths/guitar/drums.

For guitar, use an amp emulator that allows you to stack two radically different amp + effect sounds in parallel like guitar rig. I don't know why but having two diff layered sounds in unison really helps with improvising ideas, it might be that the two sounds phasing with each other has some sort of suggestive effect.

Hi, I'm new. How do I record a 'sequence' of VST knob-turning? That I to say:
>load up a VST
>add an audio effect to it
>press a key
>move around stuff on the effect panel, move knobs on the vst
>all this while the key is pressed
How do I record that entire sequence of sound, of saturation augmenting, of a high filter entering (and then leaving), etc?
>>
On Ableton btw.
>>
>>70181854
For 800 you're not gonna find a whole lot of hardware, but for just over 800 your options open up greatly. I'd suggest a waldorf blofeld and some good effect pedals. Blofeld can be had for under 400 for hte module.
>>
So when people talk about using a long attack time on a compressor, say for a piano or a guitar or something.
How long is long?

I've got some horrifying ideas about compressors to unlearn.
>>
>>70182908
you can configure VST parameters by clicking the down arrow on the VST window, click configure and then adjust parameters. Ableton saves the parameter settings so you can record automation

In the arrangement view, on the right of the channel strip there is two boxes, and a small + symbol underneath. These are Automation arming. Click on your VST and move a knob, the box will change to the parameter you are modulating. Click the + to put that modulation in its own strip. Draw it up and down at your discretion, some will have ON/OFF settings which will be all the way up and all the way down respectively - most will be an amount between 0-100% wet/dry.

You can copy and paste automation across different automation strips to automate many things to move in tandem, if you are using a VST with macro knobs, assign many parameters to a macro and modulate the macro.

have fun senpai
>>
When making a track, do you like to start with a sample, a melody/harmony, or a beat?
>>
>>70183089
I usually start with beats, bass, or pads. Rarely melodies.
>>
>>70182956
Well the actual milliseconds that the compressor shows you aren't always accurate, but I'd say around 30 or 40 ms seems to be "long" on most comp plugins I've used.

Like I said though, don't trust the milliseconds. Just try to listen for the effect that you want. One trick is to turn up the ratio really high, and lower the threshold a lot so you're getting a lot of gain reduction, and then adjust attack and release times. Slow attack usually means that the "attack" of the sound is coming through uncompressed, so try to listen for a sharp transient type thing coming though louder.

>>70183963
the clipping itself could be the cause but i guess you've probably tried that

it sounds like resonance on a filter and it only exists on the left channel (i think), I might be wrong

i just looked at what the ms20 was and thats pretty fucking cool man

if you are panning the noises because they are mono maybe the resonance is coming from phasing during the pan with one of the stereo sources

the sound begins at the beginning of the track which starts with the bass, try changing the filter on your bassline to be either a lower db cut lowpass or at a different frequency.

also because it starts at the beginning it could a rendering issue, is the noise always present while you are playing it or is it only in the rendered file? if its only in the rendered file its the rendering process is fucking up somehow

theres probably a bunch of other possibilites aswell desu

>>
>>70183963

Before I begin I want to say that this isn't a ground loop (because they tend to pick up mains hum at either 50 or 60 Hz depending on your geographical location), but it tends to share the same solutions.

I get this a lot when connecting more than one computer's audio interface to a mixer (usually USB ones) and it's usually resolved by looking carefully at how each device is grounded, and perhaps by creating a single ground path that all devices share - sometimes this makes it worse and sometimes it removes it altogether but your solution has something to do with grounding so experiment with that.

>>70185294

A rough description of what's happening here is that the two USB devices didn't share a common grounding point, or at least not common ENOUGH.

Connecting them via a wire adjoining the chassis grounds of the two mixers solved the issue - your solution may involve wrapping a grounding wire around shielding (outer casing) of the USB connectors to join them, if you have no other devices to connect to.

everyone ITT post sound design tricks

For reverb I like taking audio snippets of good quality video of gunshots in different spaces outdoor and in - it captures the space well. If you use audio of fighter jet flybys and missile launches it makes awesome flanging sounds. I've got some really good reverbs that way.

absolutely fucking shit question here so i do apologise. /ck/fag here who doesn't really browse /mu/ that much

i've been producing for a few years now but i've only ever made sample based stuff as well as using really, really basic synth stuff. i have 0 music theory knowledge other than "yeah that chord sounds good" or "hmm that key isn't right, lemme move it around until it fits"

by that i mean taking a preset, messing about with it a bit and then using it in a track. 99% of my music was basically sample manipulation.

i really want to learn synths given the fact that i rarely ever use them. so i'm gonna plan on learning a synth inside out and hopefully learn a bit more about synthesis to make my production better.

i use fl studio on a mac (so can't really install any VSTs). been using fl studio for years and didn't want ot switch to another DAW now that i got a mac. i'm thinking about learning harmor (an additive/subtractive synthesiser that's native to FL)

can anyone tell me if this is a good/bad idea? does anyone know anything about this synth they wish they knew before they started to watch hundreds of youtube videos and actually read the manual?

thanks
>>
>>70185998
Yours sounds good too the guitar tone is quite nice, but there's no drums in it so idk how to help...I could try throwing some example drums on there if that's what you want.

Good tip on the tempo though, I'll give it a shot.

Looking to learn and really dig into one of those synth and dont know which to chose:
Massive
FM8
Absynth
Reaktor
or from ableton suite: operator, analog, etc. (the ones bundled with it)

Everybody praises massive but I dont want to make dance music or too electronic stuff. More like chill beats and mellow tunes. (think Carbon Based Lifeforms, BOC, Nosaj Thing and maybe some Tim Hecker-ish melodic noise)

I got two questions for ya, /prod/
I wanna get the effects of Waves (Kanye) on my electric guitar. http://vocaroo.com/i/s1MZ8NM3gkdd
Is it just automatic filter on 16-parts? If so, how can I make it an effect that can be triggered by say, an octopad (or any other trigger for that matter) through Ableton?
>>
>>70187718
>BOC

They use the SH-101 basses/leads and CS-70m for pads/keys. Best SH-101 emulation is D16 LuSH-101. To get close to the CS-70m sound try Memorymoon's ME-80 (reportedly better than Arturia CS-80V)

Watching deadmau5's masterclass.

Part where he tries to compose a simple chord progression is really painful, lol. He said multiple times that he would just play it on a keyboard if he could.

Well, there's always time to learn how to play a piano on a basic level, I guess.

Otherwise, I enjoy this.

Artists who churn out albums of stuff have a formula or rather they have a palette of sounds/techniques that go really well together. If you're starting out (2 years is still starting out) generally you don't even know what sound you're going for exactly because you're in an experimentation stage. That is the slowest part until you find your own concept and when you find that concept it basically writes songs itself.

Some 'concepts' have a lot more 'legroom' that others. As in certain sounds stay fresh, some of them get dated after one album.
>>
>>70189671
This. I mean, I just finished a second video so I don't know exactly.

God, I really hope other masterclasses will get pirated as well now when they got some more attention because of deadmau5.

I hope I'll learn some useful /prod/ stuff from him, but really, I want to learn more about composition. I'd really like to watch Hans Zimmer's videos, and also Werner Herzog's on filmmaking, but that's a different topic.

I would turn down the high hat a tad, turn up the picking guitar and turn down the rhythm guitar. I don't know if you've doubled the picking guitar or put a subtle chorus on it, but I would put a blend in a slightly detuned harmonizer type effect to make that even more swirly. I'd do fairly heavy sidechain compression on the rhythm guitar keyed to the drums when you hit the distortion so it's like a bed of sound rather than poking out.

>>70193637

please go to the joe satriani general or some shit you don't know what you're talking about and literally think 'skill' (i.e. impressing randoms by playing fast with no emotion) is the important thing
>>
>>70196767
I actually like this a lot. The only thing I'm not sold on is the ending melody.
>>
>>70196810
>thinks you play satriani
>think you're a guitarist

lmao nice name drop, pat metheny is where its at fag. sax player btw. im sorry you're so shit you can only make music with samples.
>>
>>70196829
funny enough the second half is the part i enjoyed making most
>>
>>70196810
>speed and emotion are mutually exclusive

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lU8mQi4mjjM

are all prods this retarded is this the level of shit head you have to be to be actually unable to make original music? even actual retards can hum their own retard tunes.
>>
>>70196854
>pat metheny
that 42 string guitar tho
>>
>>70196854
>>70196898
I'm able to play practically anything on the guitar. If you genuinely think people listen to electronic music cuz they're butthurt about not knowing 'real' instruments you're probably 16 and only get enjoyment by vicariously imagining you being the person playing fast and people appreciating your epic skills because you dont appreciate the actual music
>>

linda manzer plays a 52 if u wanna check it out

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TObPfKxTxX4
>>
>>70196982
mmk play dona lee, thats all. I mean I know you cant so the point is moot. I'd actually be willing to bet money you dont even have a guitar in your house.
>>
Nothing wrong with being good at an instrument but if you're like one of those people who worships Yngwie Malmsteen you're not even in the same universe as this thread, that's sport not music.
>>
>>70197016
I could play eruption when I was 12 don't even start m8

listen to this without thinking about SKILLZ or how 'it's just pushing a button' and get back to me
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XaJn3QqiIUc
>>
>>70197102
How is that even impressive eruption is babys first tapping anyone could play that shit when they were 12. like are you a tard. play donna lee or gtfo and admit you'll never be good at music those are your options.
>>
Just ignore this cunt trying to ruin the thread

added some more layers

am I off to a good start /prod/? I'm playing everything on my synth, no drawing in the piano roll so it sounds a bit off, gonna fix that of course just want to know if it sounds OK.

>>
Do you use counterpoint in your compositions?
>>
>>70197286
thew fun thing is you'll still end up off, I mean go for it and see how its sounds but even in you in all your mighty "knowledge" will hear its off. on top of that all though you'll have to write a solo for it, I mean with a song like that you have no way to make it sound good. you'll maybe get the melody but then what are you going to stay silent for like 20 measures and justplay d dominant 7's?

lmao BTFO!!!
>>
>>70197227
thanks man. now that you say something the ending melody does sound eh. i mean theyre all simple and eh but i could do more with it. idk man i dont even know where to begin with mixing once i finish the track. im already getting tired of hearing it. i'll prob just take a week long break then start back on it. ive been working on this for like the past 5 days its killin me to keep hearing it
>>
>>70197465
The same thing happens to me when I make music. It's kind of why I went on a rant. It gets more and more frustrating as you go along.
>>
https://clyp.it/ogd0ynol
how bad am i? do i have a shot at ever being decent?
>>
>>70197488
that and i always end up completely changing my songs the more i work on them. i start off with something i think is good then next week i'll have a completely different track.very few times they turn out better than the original. i know thats pretty common but fuck man i cant tell if anythings good because i know in a weeks time ill hate it
>>
https://soundcloud.com/idiomaticbeats/livin-well

could yall critique this older beat of mine? i'm trying to get back into producing beats and have been going over some of my older work
>>
>>70197528
The only way that I've managed to get past this is to just make the track as quickly as possible and just be done with it. I almost always end up hating the final product though. Might not be the best solution.
>>
>>70197547
fuck, sorry for not clyp it. let me see if I have it uploaded there too
>>
>>70197515
I kind of like this. The rhythms are pretty good and I like what's going on around 1:30. It's a little hard to listen to at louder volumes for me.
>>
>>70197611
oh well i might change it then, make it more quiet thanks
>>
>>70197556
man i can never do that. i take my time in trakcs which doesnt seem to help i guess. shits hard going fast an idk how you do it
>>
>>70197834
I think that I've just got accustomed to making things quickly and not dwelling on it. The longer I take the less likely it is I'll finish something.
>>
if nobody responds to your clyp.it is it safe to assume it's terrible?

FL Studio like a god damn pleb. I started with LMMS which a friend forced me to stop using because he said it was holding it me back, which was definitely true. I don't think I have it in me to want to learn to use something like Ableton. What about you?
>>
>>70173494
>just remember im 11 years old
jesus christ
>>
>>70197959
he's got a point though
>>
>>70197916
most things posted in /prod/ sound better than anything I make, but then again I don't make EDM. I just try to make little comfy tunes but nobody seems to like them :(

Sometimes I feel like my imagination runs wild and the things I make sound really good in my head, like I get this visual along with the tune and I feel good, but it sounds like shit to everyone else.

>>70197955
not the same anon btw but I found FL to be a LOT easier to produce with than any other DAW. I started using FL 3 years ago, made some decent stuff with absolutely zero knowledge of production or anything. Eventually switched to Ableton and now I have a better understanding of how things work but I still don't produce anything of substance really. Though to be fair, all of my favorite producers didn't find their sound until years and years and years of practice.
>>
I'm just gonna post this because I think it's hilarious. I found my oldest music that I posted to soundcloud. I don't have the original files so I have to use this, sorry. I should be a lot better if I really did start 4 years or so ago. https://soundcloud.com/riseoftheplatypus/sets/rise-of-the-platypus-ep

>>70178939
yawwwwwwn. you're not a professional. and when you do become a professional then you can buy the stuff
>>
>>70197959
i wish i could have done that when i was 11
>>
>>70197955
man i started out with fl studio way back in the day and just could not get a grip on it idk why. i use ableton now. for some reason ableton makes more sense to me than FL studio but i still only know the basics of ableton. im more concerned about trying to improving my sound design than learning anything else. i really like ableton mostly for how easy and fast it is to play with samples
>>

>>
The way deadmau5 writes melodies is just hilarious
>>
>>70178533
I dig it. The lead around 20 seconds is a little pedestrian, but overall it's promising.
>>
>>70182979
That's pretty sweet. I like the weird resonate bass at the beginning. The snare-ish sound before everything drops out is a little boring, and after that it feels a bit empty.
>>
>>70193684
The mixing isn't great, but I'm a sucker for that kind of distorted guitar sound. It's not my cup of tea overall, but it's certainly good. Could use lyrics. I'm not sure why, but I was singing For Reverend Green in my head along with it.

Yo can anybody recommend me some tutorials for U-HE Diva? Like indepth stuff? ADSR has a video but rest is pay2watch
