It's the George Harrison effect. When you have more than 2 songwriters but one always gets less songs on an album then he has more time to stockpile his best work and release it sporadically.

The majority of my favorite Sonic Youth songs are the ones lead by Kim's vocals or songs where Kim and Thurston did duets/trade off vocals. I'm not one of those people that says she's an incredible bass player, but I like what she does on all of those records. I love her vocals and lyrics the most too, easily the most imaginative and expressive to me. Lee and Thurston have plenty of good material, but I feel like even the two of them played a lot of their best guitar parts on songs that Kim sung lead on.

I didn't think she was really into that much? I read her memoir and she mentioned a lot of pot smoking and a lot of acid but that was pretty much it. Was definitely a prime qt for a while though, I think she just kinda aged more like milk than wine.

Still don't buy it that he was addicted to heroin himself though. It only seemed like he had a ton of friends and peers around him who were addicted and died of overdoses, hence him writing songs on the topic.
