"Funk metal" is just a cheap label that journalists invented in the 90s to classify the more bass-influenced offsprings of what was essentialy the cross-over era, when music alphabetization was higher and so musicians of the same band had more diverse influences. The point was blending to create a distinct sound, not going in a straight direction and saying "we're playing this".
Next thing you'll tell me is that Red Hot Chilli Peppers is "funk metal" too.

Another example of a music label just as ridiculous as this is "groove metal", which was invented just to make a sense out of Pantera's (then) unique way of playing thrash metal with hardcore influences. I cringe everytime.

These skater-mag definitions never had any academic importance whatsoever and just to get this straight, Black Sabbath NEVER played metal. Their music it's just amazing rock from the 70's, made unique by Iommi's use of tuning and Ozzy's fixation with occult themes and imagery.
They just sowed the seeds for it.
