you guys don't get that a chord progression without the melody, metric, polyphonic elements, root notes etc. doesn't mean anything. It could be bad, but it could also be good. Most Mozart or Beethoven sonatas are not much more complex if you just take the basic harmonic changes. On the other hand something can have crazy chord changes and be dull and boring

Lots of playing and practice. Also a little studying in music theory. You just start remembering what they sound like after a while.
>>
>>70113461
For monophonic instruments, yes, unless you have the chord names written in above the staff. Obviously if you see a bunch of arpeggios or have a good ear, you could quite easily figure out chord progressions, but in general there are other things to think about while playing.

The root chord (Let's say E Major) you know it's major because it's upper case. Then the fourth chord in the key, or "subdominant". It's also major in a major key, and you know for sure, because it's upper case. The subdominant of E would be A major. Then the second chord, which, in a major key, is always minor. You can tell it's minor becausr the 2 is lowercase. That would be f# minor. Finally, the third chord, also minor, in this case, a g minor.

The major key is I-ii-iii-IV-V-vi-vii* the asterisk is there becausr the seventh chord is diminished. Its basically to figure out if the chord is major or minor in a key.

>>
>>70115343
not him but,

Say we're in C major.
>the dominant is the chord where the root is a 5th above the tonic
>the dominant of C is a G major chord
>now suppose we're in the key of G major, the dominant of C
>the dominant of G is a D major chord since D is a 5th above G
So in C major, the dominant of a dominant (secondary dominant for short) is a D major chord.

Secondary dominants resolve to the original dominant chord. So in C major, a typical progression would be D - G - C. Since the D chord has a non-diatonic F# that strongly wants to resolve to G, it's a much stronger progression than a typical Dm - G - C.

Great analysis. I never knew that that was referred to as a secondary dominant, but I love the interval since the F# in that example has a Lydian effect and I'm a sucker for Lydian mode.
