If you skip to 13:42 you'll recognize that theme.
I come from the outside and I have a question for you classical listeners.
What albums on this chart (particularly /mu/core) have you listened to and what did you think of them?
Is there a greater Chopin piece than his fourth Ballade? Is there a greater solo piano piece in existence? (yes, I know Hungarian Rhapsody)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pe-GrRQz8pk
I think Ballade no. 1, Scherzo no. 2, and Nocturne op. 27 no. 2 are on the same level but none have hammered my soul in the exact way
>>70109593
I always forget Tabula Rasa is the token Classical /mu/core album.
There are some good choices in the """CLASSICS""" section. Specifically Faust (1971) Desertshore (1970). Other than that, there are some of my personal favourites of their respective genres - I don't listen to Metal or Hip-hop so I can't comment on those choices. And I've basically heard nothing from the Neo-mu or p4k core sections.
As far as Jazz is concerned, some of my favourite popular Jazz records or """ESSENTIALS""" are listed, specifically: Ornette Coleman's - Free Jazz (1961) and Wayne Shorter's - Speak no Evil (1966) Also I'm a sucker for anything Art Blakey and Mingus.
To conclude - there are alot of my favourite rock albums - specifically in the "classics" section. I hate that Tabula Rasa is the only classical album I can see at first glance, the underepresentation of classical music on /mu/core is kind of laughable.
>>70109593
heard almost all at least once, except for metal
>>70109938
That metal section is the perfect blend of absolute shit and the best in the genre. I wish /mu/ was more concise when it came to metal.

>Found these yesterday. I'm not a fan of later Boulez but this 69 recording with Cleveland has to be one of the best I heard of le sacre. Gotta listen to more of his earlier stuff.
Well just listened to the other recording from pic which is from 63 with l'orchestre national de la R.T.F Paris and it's pretty fucking brutal. I made some research and here's a comment I found on amazon:
>It was released on CD at one time on the Ades label. Long out of print. I think I read somewhere that Boulez doesn't like the recording and has done what he can to keep it from coming back in print, although perhaps that is incorrect. I agree that it has a "raw ferocity that few versions can match." Perhaps Boulez has outgrown raw ferocity. Anyway, I agree that this is a great Sacre.
Here's the recording:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9wK8fSkjOy0
5/5 highly recommended.
>>70112418
Yeah, I know that recording as well. I'm not sure how accurate it is that Boulez has tried to keep it withheld, though. As far as I know the one recording he did try very hard to withhold was his Beethoven 5th (which is kind of hilarious)--funnily enough it was reissued in the latest Columbia set after his death.
But yeah, that recording is pretty ferocious. It doesn't sound as refined and that's what makes it so good.
>>70111883
In terms of chromaticism almost nothing tops that prelude for me, IMO it's truly in a league of its own
I really love Henry Purcell, which mega should I download?
>>70109088

>>70108943
you guys are much too strict with form classification. A sonatina is not only a 'short sonata', it's also about the necessary technique and the sophistication. For example, Beethoven's 25th sonata was labeled 'sonatina', but was much longer than a 'sonatina' which you have in mind.
Also, why do you care so much about how it's called? Doesn't matter so much
About the themes: you're wrong, at least in the German denomination (Hauptthema, Seitenthema), which is the only language that counts for me in classical music (maybe next to Italian)
>>70106269
I don't get it. It's just mediocre...

Does anyone understand the physics of how the species of wood a woodwind is constructed with alters the sound? Like a grenadilla clarinet versus boxwood or even plastic? Does it vibrate in some way? Wouldn't acrylic be a more stable/durable/cheaper/cleaner material?
I hear a lot of descriptions about the difference between cedar and spruce soundboards for guitars but I've also read there's no real difference because the only thing that matters is grain density which varies by individual trees.
>>70112418
boulez's stravinsky in general is always good. dude has remarkable insight to the ballet scores
>>70114963

>>70115226
Revisit the Rite at some point. It's a really great piece that (in my experience at least) never ceases to be enjoyable, but perhaps you just need to get over the initial shock first.
>>70105135
How's my opera voice?
https://clyp.it/oup5mw5v
>>70115023
From what I know density is the most important factor, but finishing (lacquer/emulsion/whatever else you put on wood) massively affects tonality too. I'm pretty sure the main reason no one has reproduced a Stradivarius violin is because no one knows the chemical makeup of the original wood finish.
>>70114963
>daring
Yeah, I contemplated adding something like a warning or something, but felt like a faggot writing it. For me it was the piece that really opened up the genre and showed me that it was not just "boring violin music".
>>70114743
Don't worry bout Stravinsky, the one I linked is a controversial piece, especially in its time. The premiere actually incited a riot.
My best advice to get into classical though is just to hang out in this thread and listen to the links.
>>70115707
>"boring violin music"

>>70115383
I'd like to add that the Rite of Spring gets heavy as fuck as well, especially at the end. In fact, I don't think I've ever heard anything more intense in my life. Definitely revisit some time.
>>70115616
True, I forgot to mention shellac is thinner and thus better sounding than vinyl varnish on soundboards. It requires special maintenance though. Stradivarius has some beeswax secret 11 herbs & spices meme about his polish. The instruments seem to be more of a prestige thing than anything, based on what I've read about blind tests.
>>70114963

Werner Herzog made one of his pseudo-documentaries on Gesualdo once, called Five Voices of Death. It's kinda meh, but it has some great live performances in it.
Never heard about any other Gesualdo project though, gotta check that out.
didnt mean to reply to that, retry
God dammit this took forever, and i only got two mins of audio. I tried to do something unique, its sporky but some parts turned out alright i think, but the idea kinda changed over time.

The sixth movement is one of the most inspiring pieces of music I've ever heard. Had the opportunity to hear it played by the LA Phil under Dudamel and it was pretty magical. The last chord was incredibly homogenized, unlike anything I've ever heard.

Kind of a random question, but does anyone know how many strings instruments are traditionally used in Dvoraks New World Symphony? As in, how many celli, violas, violins and double basses

To understand Shostakovich, you need to understand soviet Russia. Very difficult place and time to be a composer. His string quartets were written for the drawer, and he never expected them to be played in his lifetime. His symphonies had to conform to what was acceptable by the party.
Living under constant threat of death, torture and/or imprisonment and with 1 in 5 Russian citizens as informants, life was somewhat strenuous. It was usually dangerous to express your opinion, especially if it was an anti-party opinion.

I rarely listen to any complete works by shosta but rather single pieces. His longer works (symphonies, ballets, operas, etc.) tend to be mind-numbingly boring (as in "non-stimulating") the majority of the time and only gets interesting at a select few pieces in each work, usually his more action packed and theme rich ones. His style of filler is like playing silently for 5-10 and then have a enormously bombastic piece lasting 3-5 minutes, and then back to being boring; thus I tend to just listen to singular pieces at once.
His 5th symphony is pretty gratifying to binge-listen through though, the other symphonies are just long and boring imo. I also adore his 8th String Quartet/Chamber Symphony, especially the 2nd piece.

Was this the same for filmmakers like Andrei Tarkovsky?
>>70137514
no, once Stalin died things started to relax a bit, and we get interesting avant garde Russian things happening, sometimes with more freedom that the west even.
Why is there practically no classical music which is just beautiful and soothing? I don't just want to listen to debussy and chopin's nocturne's all day (yes I know there's more than just this), but it's hard to find that sort of music and it's practically the only thing I'm ever in the mood for. Hardly anything in that big folder of downloads is just slow and beautiful, it's just a bunch of loud and overwhelming music which doesn't move me emotionally in the slightest.
>>70137514
>>70137858
actually, yes, looking into it Tarkovsky had to deal with the same problems, being forced to cut films and sometimes not getting more than a single showing of his films. He left the soviet union just after Stalker, stalker.

That's because the selection is mostly shit and also lacks important reference recordings.
I could spoonfeed you with recommendations but I won't do that.
Chopin and Debussy are easily two of the most accessible composers out there which is why everything else seems so overwhelming to you.
If you're sincerely interested in finding more take your time and look up early and late romantic composers. Give everything you come across a good listen and don't distract yourself.
