I can't say I relate to his feelings regarding the album. I've never found it as unpleasant as he clearly does. It's dissonant and chaotic, but not "painful" or whatever he's saying.
So it's kind of hard to get much out of his review when we get totally different basic impressions of the album.

Idk, like as someone who enjoyed the album right off that bat, I can definitely see why people don't enjoy the clashing of different parts creating that particular sense of chaos. This is a record that's pretty easy to digest if you listen to it normie style not really giving attention for each individual detail. I can totally see those that like to analyze the music they listen to initially get put off by this record. The album's weaknesses (lack in dynamics and progression on the tracks, the odd mixing done by Zappa where the guitars are kinda muddy and the vocals too high in the mix) only exacerbates those problems for people that can't get into the album.

As much as I have to disagree with the guy sometimes, I feel sorry for him to have to put up with such a ridiculously retarded fanbase.

I guess he kind of brought it upon himself since he started to review popular records more frequently than before, but even shitposters here have more dignity than them.

He does an alright job. I think he over-exaggerates how dissonant and wild the album is, in every song there is at least one hook or riff you can bob along to. Songs like Pachuco Cadaver, Ella Guru, Sugar 'n' Spikes, Veteran's Day Poppy, whatever, all feature distinct and catchy structures.

To me, Anthony sounds like someone who might have listened to TMR maybe 9-10 times, and hasn't really got his head round it yet. He's seen other people discussing why it's good, and can see why what they're saying would make it good, but he himself might not have it completely clicked yet.

I agree with this although to be fair he does largely admit that it hasn't clicked for him.
I think the argument that hooks, riffs and rhythms emerge from the chaos is a strong argument for the musical value of the album.

What I don't think clicked with him is that his criticisms about the silliness and bad mixing, etc are what make the album such an effective artistic statement. It's not trying to be sophisticated and Anthony frames it incorrectly and approaches his criticism in an ineffective way.

Aside from large parts of Neon Meate Dream, Pena and arguably Dachau Blues, there aren't many sections of this album in which there isn't a hook to latch onto and give you a grounding in the great mish-mash of rhythms and melodies that TMR has.

Anyway, what's everyone's favourite section of TMR? this is 100% mine, the interplay between the guitars and the virtuosity of the drumming is incredible

I'd say that fantano also glosses over the incredible technical skill of the magic band, both compositionally and performance-wise. First they stick together a bunch of complex instrumentals assembled in part by a bunch of brainless piano doodles that the Captain gave them as "material"; then they rehearse for hours every day to get all this incredibly challenging and difficult-to-play perfect; then the majority of the album was recorded in a single 8-hour session (with exceptions to the tracks recorded in "the house" and Moonlight on Vermont + Veterans Day Poppy, which were recorded the December following, with a different bassist). Incredible musicianship

Also now I've mentioned that those tracks have a different bassist there's no way to unhear it, he's so much more frigid and timid than Rockette Morton
