What's the best gothic band?
Panic at the Disco
Radiohead
U2
Coldplay
The Smiths
>>70060051
Siouxsie and the Banshees or The Cure
cHRISTIAN DEATH
>>70060051
I'm partial to Velvet Acid Christ myself.
bauhaus
>>70060288
Velvet Acid Christ is literally shadow the hedgehog the band
>>70060051
The Cure
Type O Negative
Sisters of Mercy
>>70061312
These 3 nothing else is a contender
>>70060051
>gothic band
>everyone immediately spergs about siouxsie or the cure, maybe even bauhaus
it's like no one who claims to be goth has ever heard of Sex Gang Children.
they don't have any songs on youtube since the lead singer had them taken down, no songs to stream. they were part of the bat cave scene when it first popped up
>>70063820
Heh to be fair SGC don't really hold a candle to Cure, Bauhaus or Siouxsie, as far as quality/quantity ratio goes. Fantastic, underrated vand nonetheless.
>>70060069
NONE of those are even remotely goth.
>>70062264
Do you even Bauhaus bro?
How can you sit there and say the Cure is more goth than Bauhaus? Or Christian Death?
>>70064841
2 of those are somewhat goth
>>70063820
I suggest you go search Sex Gang Children on youtube. There is a bunch :)
>>70064870
Bauhaus was more of a singles band, their albums don't really hold up that well. Flat Field and Crackle are absolutely essential though.
>>70064895
No.
U2 was definitely in the playlist of many goths' but nothing past like Joshua Tree, and even then, it wasn't goth. But it was in the realm.
Coldplay is rock. Well, more pop than rock. Nothing even remotely close to goth about it. Its almost less goth than nickleback.
Radiohead, pop rock, period, nothing even remotely goth about it.
Fields of the Nephilim
Clan of Xymox
Paradise Lost
My Dying Bride
does anyone find goth extremely fucking cringey?
everything from the aesthetic to lyrics
who is it meant to appeal to? in b4 'goths'
>>70064975
Depends if its REAL goth, or if its bullshit made for the Hot Topic wannabe goths that would have been cheerleaders and football players in any other decade.
The Smashing Pumpkins
>>70064992
I really cant tell the difference between goth music and emo music apart from that goths dress up 100% of the time and emos only sometimes
its both moody depressing shit, like jesus go take a walk
>>70064949
>Radiohead, pop rock, period, nothing even remotely goth about it
clearly you've listened to only a few early radiohead albums, post-punk influenced them pretty heavily
>>70065027
emo is one genre of music and gothic music is several genres
The absolute apex of Gothic Music
>>70063861
>quality/quantity ratio
Explain pls.
They sold only one official album. Other labels wanted a name change but they refused. Not having a label just prevents any band from getting recognition. All the albums on their site is self recorded
>>70064916
I meant in terms of studio releases. Live vids are poorly recorded though
>>70065226
The Cure have a shit load of fantastic records. 17 Seconds, Faith, Pornography, Disintegration, Bloodflowers, all high quality works that stand on their own, and this is only their generally considered goth albums.
Same for Type O and Siouxsie. SGC albums, as a whole, don't really hold up to any of these, mainly due to being fairly inconsistent.
>>70065019
Gish, Adore and Machina are fairly goth-ish. They started as a post-punk/goth/shoegaze hybrid, no wonder.
>>70060051
Best goth album ever
>>70060288
>Velvet Acid Christ
>>70061305
techno, not goth...
Skinny Puppy's more goth than these guys...
>>70064932
YOU TAKE THAT BACK!
Burning from the Inside and the Sky's Gone Out are awesome...
>>70064949
U2's first two albums, I can see.
Probably because of Martin Hannet (sp?) producing / engineering their sound so they got that "Joy Division" drum sound and all...
Not hating on them or liking them, just trying to be objective so far as the "goth" sound / material goes.
My favorites will always be the Fields of the Nephilim. Pure substance.
>>70067006
They're still regular post-punk though. Their riffs are all based in major scales and chords, they barely use chorus effects, Bonos delivery is pretty damn energetic and their subject matter and aesthetic doesn't have anything to do with goth's.
>>70064992
precisely...
Check out Hildegard von Bingen, Mussorgsky (Night on Bald Mountain), etc...
Hell, even Leonard Cohen was more goth that some of these bands being cited (Sex Gang Children? Velvet Acid Christ? Please...)
>>70065069
this one and "Ashes" are really great. I preferred Ashes because it varied more sonically and after Rozz left the band went to shit save for some choice tracks...
>>70064951
>Clan of Xymox
They're really good, the darkwave side of goth is my favorite with the exception of a couple Bauhaus/SoM albums
>>70065990
>inconsistent
Honestly, that's what makes them great, i think.
gene loves gezebel
>>70067077
ok, I get you... I was just thinking atmospherically. I guess lyrically the only remotely goth stuff would be about war and being cold and wet.
Yeah, their music was fairly basic. At least Bauhaus used a fretless bass. And jazzed it up a bit with the keyboards, etc...
>>70060051
Black Tape for a Blue Girl
Lycia
Virgin Prunes
Love Is Colder Than Death
Theatre of Hate
Is Dead Can Dance goth
>goth thread
>long discussion about U2 and not Virgin Prunes
What the fuck is wrong with this awful board?
>>70067478
Black Tape for a Blue Girl
Lycia
Love is Colder Than Death
>your name wouldn't happen to be Amy or Victoria, would it?
>>70067478
I love all these but I can't gat into Black Tape for a Blue Girl
>>70067527
sometimes...
>>70067527
Their earliest works were. That's about it, really.
is this /dark/?
>>70063820
>watches Chris Ott once
And Also the Trees
>>70067661
Literally who
>>70067470
Don't get me wrong, I love U2. The Edge's playing and their rythm section is fantastic. They're just not related at all with the goth movement.
>>70067527
They're definitely /dark/ (also one of the best bands ever tbqh)
>>70067613
It is now.
>>70067538
Only listened to if I Die. Really like some moments, didn't dig the more theatrical/silly ones. What do u recc?
dis
Most modern stuff is campy as fuck and not in a good way.
The Soft Moon are an exception.
https://youtu.be/jILV2bOemmg
>>70068070
Not true btw
>>70068085
>Blutengel
>Bloody Dead and Sexy
>VNV Nation
>Psyclon 9
Campy as fuck and just plain baaaad
>>70068070
If you dig Deathrock check out Raspberry Bulbs, one of the best bands in that style rn
>>70065027
>cant tell the difference between goth music and emo music apart
Goth music often have that trademark snaring bassline that constantly rapes your ear while emo music is just the bastard child of post-hardcore. Of course, they both suck.
I think Christian Death is still my #1 goth band.
Kommunity FK, Screams for Tina, 45 Grave... deathrock is where it's at.
NIN is the magnum opus of Goth
Speaking of goth, what are some good darkwave bands? I just started listening to TRUST and Cold Cave and its so good, but I havent found much like it
>>70067908
+1
Rema Rema/Mass are the shit, and The Wolfgang Press were bretty gud too
>>70070968
You have classics like Clan of Xymox or Dead can Dance, but for more contemporary acts I'd look at The Soft Moon or In Death it Ends.
>>70070970
Dude, you are the 1st person who I've seen on here besides Spirasen or me who've mentioned The Wolfgang Press. Great band. Although only their first three albums were remotely gothic.
Shut That Door
https://youtu.be/prVeP-D90jA
Horribly underrated band.
>>70064951
Early/mid 90s goth metal is the shit.
>>70070968
I really like Xeno & Oaklander
Sheen
https://youtu.be/5mqtvkluOD8
Joy Division?
I don't really listen to gothic rock am I wrong here
>one album
>only video footage is one concert recorded off a TV playing a VHS
I cry every time.
Bumping thread with the last good Christian Death album: Atrocities
Tales of Innocence
https://youtu.be/bcohcmNXVf8
After that Valor turns the band to shit.
>>70060051
Southern Death Cult is cool
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3lGPSA2U_4E
>>70060051
>best
>gothic
isn't that an oxymoron, OP?
Clan of Xymox
The Chameleons
Night Sins
Shadow Age
The Danse Society
Garden of Mary
Mission UK
The Sisters of Mercy
The Essence
Cemetery
The Cult
She Past Away
The Jesus And Mary Chain
Witching Hour
Xymox (early stuff)
Silent Scream
>>70073470
Until they went hair metal
https://youtu.be/k6PgftKbQnQ
>>70073510
You're sleeping on some good music.
>>70073574
Nah they remained great up until Sonic Temple. Then they turned to garbage. Then they released their 94 self-titled, much more dissonant, almost with some experimental vibes going on, really underrated stuff. Their sludgy sounding 2011 album is also great. Idk about their last one.
>>70073528
Xmal Deutschland
Joy Division
The Cure
>>70067568
same, and i normally love darkwave. thinking over, it's european darkwave i prefer, the american stuff is lacking something
Some lesser known stuff
The Mekano Set - Monsoon
https://youtu.be/lINK3vtr_5Y
Purr Machine - Squirm While You Can
https://youtu.be/cR1vJddWbEY
Swarf - Shadows
https://youtu.be/Ut8fniymKgo
>>70060167
was just about to say that
basically everything Rozz did
Whatever happened to /dark/?
I miss it.
>>70061312
>Sisters of Mercy
I love Sisters, but they only released one good album. Floodland was just decent, and Vision Thing was awful.
FAAA has one my favourite songs
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0FhFMkd4u_U
I'm gonna say Bauhaus.
Nine inch nails
>>70065027
>goth and emo the same
Maybe when emo bands like American Football and Paramore rip of The Cure from the Faith and Disnintegration eras, but you clearly know nothing of either.
>>70074563
*rip off
Jesus this board is crap. Always jerking off the same bands and some homo comes in talking shit in the worst way. I nominate The Bolshoi as the greatest.
>>70074009
They also have 2 great compilations
Don't forget Asylum Party
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FlUx5cPLAM0
>>70073585
Nah, I'll give you The Cure, but I could never hear them again and be fine.
>>70072668
well... WHAT IS IT???
ARCADIA???
DURAN DURAN???
>>70072884
I tried to like this one but just couldn't get into it.
I did, however, like the Scriptures and Ashes and Catastrophe Ballet. And a little bit of that one with the Wind Kissed Pictures and Amaterasu. After that, Valor sucked.
>>70075488
They're Cold Wave.
>>70074563
When the ever FUCK did Paramore and American Football ever ripped The Cure??????
>>70076520
Come on faggot, use you head. For American Football he composition tab of their eponymous album on wikipedia talks about how Kinsella listened to The Cure often in conjunction with Post-Punk and Indie bands, and you can notice heavy derivitation songs like "Never Meant" take from songs like, "The Drowning Man." That whole album is if some sad teenager hired The Cure to back up his heartfelt sorrows about adolescence.
