Nirvana gets shit on on here because so many regular people call them the greatest band ever. They weren't, and they ripped everything off, but to call them shit is inaccurate IMO. They were really good.

Better than the Pumpkins, anyway. As whiny as Cobain was Corgan is way worse, Melon Collie sounds like it was written by a middle schooler. Siamese Dream has really impressive guitar work but I think Nirvana's releases were actually more interesting despite the pretty simplistic guitar. Cobain was an inarguably better lyricist too. I mean he never went so far as to just outright whine like Corgan on songs like Zero or Butterfly with Broken Wings.

Blue Album is better than Pinkerton in every conceivable way and anyone who says otherwise is contrarian.

The songwriting on Pinkerton is embarrassingly lazy. Especially on Across the Sea. Rivers isn't talented enough to make a real album and he should have stuck to garage band level music. Pinkerton does have some excellent guitar riffs though. I give it credit for the amount of ambition behind it, but ultimately I think it was a failure.

I think the lyrics on PFNO are much better, and the album has more interesting guitar. Not only that but the atmosphere is builds with the long progressions, as well as how seamlessly the whole thing flows together is very impressive. Siamese Dream just doesn't bring as much to the table IMO, and it's a bit repetitive, structure-wise.

The lyrics are indeed better, no doubt. The qualities you mentioned also apply to SD though. The long songs full of buildups, the dreamy, dream poppish backgrounds, all of these give it a huge dynamic range and a really dreamy yet fierce mood. Also, the production and tones are all carefully created, pretty flawless work imo. It's also arguably more diverse with takes like Disarm, Luna and Spaceboy.

Whether or not Nowhere is better than Siamese Dream is debatable, but I think this album's influence in british rock through the 90's (or worldwide, really) is really understate. This shit pratically defined alternative rock to come. Shit that got huge anounts of praise, like Radiohead's The Bends, are so in debt to Nowhere it's not even funny. Just listen to Unfamiliar and then Bones, the influence is huge.
