Thick compression is great for funky riffs like this:

https://youtu.be/mMPfYYE5CBE
>>
>>70014375
They can be useful for various reasons.
As a compressor of course (sustain, evening things out a little I guess)
It's good as a boost as well.

Whatever, I like it on my clean channel to add a little more comp and as a very slight boost.

>it's dirt cheap so who cares if it's broken after some years
consumer electronics designed to be disposable are a waste of money, especially with something as relatively simple as a guitar pedal. for slightly more money you could buy a full sized pedal, have the ability to repair it, and have it indefinitely. all electronic components will fail eventually, once your mini pedal breaks it's gone forever. I'd rather have a bigger board with 5 pedals I can keep, repair, and rely upon than a board half the size with 5 pedals I'll have to replace every 10-15 years. guitar pedal manufactures have finally figured out reselling the same pedal to over and over is better than selling you one once. mini pedals are a bad value and the space issue is really an industry manufactured non issue with most guitarists

Disposable? Waste of money?
A pedal is $20 which is nothing compared to meme pedals.

Furthermore, I don't believe this disposable thingy. In the end, the components are pretty easy to change even with a small pedal.

Come on, we are not talking about Apple selling overpriced shit, with everything soldered and difficult to replace.
(Though, when you try hard, you can always repair stuff by yourself)

so play like jimi but clean and slower

>>
>>70015645
Yeah, but there's more to it than that. Start by learning to put Diminished 7th passing chords in your chord changes.

So if you're going from Cmaj7 to Dm7, throw a Dbdim7 in between, for example.

x 3 5 4 5 x

x 4 5 3 5 x

x 5 7 5 6 x
>>
>>70015340
You're so fucking stupid that you don't even understand that the video you posted (>>70015130) just reinforces the other Anons point about the small components being impossible to repair. That line of silver dots on the left side of the circuit is a set of resistors, you'd just burn up the replacement resistor and destroy the traces trying to replace one with a standard soldering iron.

Shut the fuck up, dumbass.
>>
Sorry if this is a stupid question, but I got a new bass and it has a 'pickup blending pot'. Can someone explain what blending pickups does?
>>
>>70015879
You're probably used to seperate volume controls for each pickup. A blend poti reduces the volume of one pickup while increasing the volume of the other. Middle position is both pickups 100%, all the way clockwise is the neck pickup solo, all the way counterclockwise is the bridge pickup solo. Everything in between is, well, in between these states.
>>
Is there a good book or a pdf or a spreadsheet or anything with chord shapes?
Something like this guy posted
>>70015836
Whenever I try and record some progressions with some maj7 or m7 chords, I mostly rely on the shapes shown in his post (i.e. where the root is on the A string). But I'd like to know them in other positions as well, together with all the other sexy chords, like dims and alts and doms

I think they're cool but I don't really know how to apply the information to my practice. Fast alternate picking with a downward pickslant feels awkward to me. I guess I've always been an upward pickslanter, since I prefer to rest the heel of my thumb against the body of the guitar or on the lower strings. I lack speed and control when picking with my hand turned like pic related. Maybe I just need more practice with that technique.
>>
>>70017915
I just stumbled across them, seems like it's probably a scam or a waste of money so I wanted to hear other people's opinions on it. If other people consider it useful or worth it then I don't mind spending money, it's about the same price as a couple of guitar lessons and potentially has a lot more useful information.
>>
>>70017953
I don't know how much you should worry about being an upwards or downwards pickslanter. John Mclaughlin and Marty Friedman both play primarily with upstrokes and they're both super fast players. Maybe not as fast as Yngwie or Batio, but still plenty fast.

crank about 100 degrees clockwise for best action. if it doesn't slide perfectly, just give a little more pressure.
>>
>>70018421
fair enough, I'll stay away, but for future reference, what could happen if I had not asked and just done?
>>
>>70018402
What you can gain is a straighter neck that will give you lower action near the 12 fret and maybe fix your intonation if you're having there. What you can lose is your neck. You can break your neck or pop off your fret board, but that's really only if you're a retard who cranks the truss rod way too hard. Your neck should only need small adjustments, if it requires large adjustments you should probably take it to a real tech because there might be larger problems lurking that you don't know about.
>>
>>70018506
I put very little confidence in my observations, how would I know for sure that my guitar actually needs this to be done?
>>
>>70018582
Press down any string on the first and BEHIND the last fret. Check how much room the string has in that position from the 7th or 8th fret, should be 0.010 to 0.020 inches
>>
>>70018582
You need a straight edge that you lay across the fret board. The real tool is something called a a neck relief gauge, but you can get buy with a standard ruler if it's long enough. Just lay it across all the frets and if it looks like there's more than a few milimeters of distance between the 12th fret and the ruler then your neck needs adjusting. In rare cases your neck can actually be bent convexly instead of concavely and if that's the case the only way to fix it (if you don't have a biflex truss rod) is to take off the fret board so you can take out the truss rod.

My dad used to be a violinist before becoming a guitarist. He says that violins are a bit shit, very non-versatile. He does say that being a violinist makes him very aware of being in tune or not, and he dislikes a lot of guitar music because its not perfectly in tune.

Well obviously, Jimi wasn't blasting Voodoo Child straight out of the womb. IIRC he would practice upwards of 12 hours a day.

My point is the greatest instrumentalists utilise their skill-set with total freedom. Playing solely via pitch, transposing on the spot, instantaneously knowing what to play and where. That's musical instinct and a brain mechanism I totally believe some are born with.

Pretty confusing. I want to say he's in Eb standard, but there are times when he's up high on the neck and it still sounds like there's a low Gb on an open string, which I can't figure out how that would make sense for any other chord

Either way, these are close to what the two main chords are. Everything else seems to be a variation of those. Hopefully just that helps a bit

Jimi would sit his ass on his dads couch, watch tv and strum his cheap denelectro for hours on end during the summer. Most of that gave him basic understanding of guitar and where to find the notes he was looking for. Playing for Curtis Knight and the Squires and eventually little Richard helped him find his own sound and showmanship along with all the other blues tricks he learned from other guitarists

A more intuitive way is to put a capo on first fret and hold down string on last fret. Check distance between string and top of 12th fret. Take a business card and slide it between string and 12th fret to measure. If string is hitting the top of the business card and you can't slide it between, loosen truss rod by 1/8th of a turn. Remeasure. If string is visibly higher than the business card, tighten by 1/8th turn. Remeasure.

You're aiming for the distance between string and fret to be about the same width as the business card.

Js have a more scooped sound for slap bass.

Ps are usually more punchy since the single pickup is higher on the body towards the neck.

Running a J with only the neck pickup will give you P bass like tones.

I stayed home with my mother for nye.

My dad died this year so we had a quiet night in with a couple of relatives dropping in.

No hangover for first nye in ages

man, what a lovely show. that performance ALWAYS makes me dance, and nothing does. Elvis was the greatest performer.... check out his 1977 unchained melody from the final show. Lovely & sad.

Project time!

This is a Kramer D1 I snagged for super cheap last month. Plan was to either string it BEAD if I liked it or de-fret it if I was meh on it.

Bass is meh but acceptable and I think it will work just fine as a fretless. So off go the frets sometime this week. Also it currently has a Hipshot Kickass bridge installed. I like that bridge a lot.

> Buy random pedals in pawn shops

it's like a p bass (mostly), but it has that snap coming off of the bridge if you slap/pop. you can get a lot of extra snarl on your pops if you play a p/j, or it's good for soloing if you play jazz.

the guy from etid plays a pj, and the old bassist from saves the day does too. its good for students as well if you are doing student type jazz shit so you can use the bridge, and then use the p pickup for your emo/punk/rock bullshit that you do on the side.

More maple fretboards I guess. It's not like maple is more expensive than rosewood (it's actually cheaper).

hello bros, hows everyone? im alone but im happy as shit. who knows, maybe cause im just getting older and what the hell.

anyway, i wanted to ask you about les pauls. its been my kinda dream guitar for a while and i have some moneys so im going after one. but im kinda confused with the models and stuff, s maybe you guys can guide me. im still on low budget so im going for something like a les paul special price. used. i have an old b.c. rich wich covers my metal needs (not with emg's, but stock bc rich humb's, but i like it, its a nj series from 98). i want the les paul for more experimental music.. droney, noisey, sometimes clean ambient-folk stuff.. who knows. ive played a couple oe epi les pauls and ilike a lot how they feel, quite comfortable with the les paul model... by the way ive noticed sunn o))) uses les pauls with p90s pick ups.. i dont want to do what they do. but could reach those points sometimes..feel free to suggest whats better.

on the picture we have:
1- Gibson Les Paul Studio (2012)
2-Gibson Les Paul Special. (2000)
3-Gibson Les Paul '60s Tribute - Honeyburst
4- Gibson Les Paul Traditional Pro

they are around the same price, except number 4 wich is almost the double..dont think i can afford that but im interested in info about its pickups. its the only one that in the ad tells wich pick ups are.. and they are classic 57.. rest are stock i supose, guitar 2 and 3 have p90's right? or are they different?

guide me! thanks, and have a nice night, 9 miutes to new year here lol.

jeez cry about it whydoncha
>>
>>70028149
I'm not sure about #2 but #3 does have p90's. #1 pickups are burstbuckers.

My vote goes to #3. That's the best value of the list including the more expensive traditional pro.
>>
>>70028385
cool, but what do you mean exactly with number 3 having the best value?thanks man!
>>
>>70028440

I guess I mean it will sound and play pretty much as well as the more expensive traditional.
>>
>>70028496
ah, i see, thanks mate! anddo you think 3 and 4 will play/sound better than 1 and 2?, thanks!
its from 2011, thats the only info and thats the only pic posted
